THE LORD GOD COMMANDED THE MAN / GENESIS 2:16

(KJV) Genesis 2:16-17

And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

THE LORD GOD COMMANDED THE MAN / GENESIS 2:16

From the beginning of the history of the human race, God has expected obedience and acceptance of His Word as absolute truth.

  1. Faith and obedience were the principles that would govern Adam’s relationship to God in Eden. God warned Adam that he would die if he rebelled against the will of God. God spoke specifically about not eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:17). Adam had to trust God’s commands because he did not yet know the reality of human death.
  2. God gave the command (Genesis 2:16-17) as a moral test. It gave Adam a definite and intentional choice to believe and obey, or to doubt and defy his Creator’s will.
  3. As long as Adam believed God and obeyed, he would enjoy eternal life and fellowship with God. But if he sinned by disobeying, he would experience moral disaster and suffer the tragic consequences of death (Genesis 2:17).

And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

PUT HIM IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN / GENESIS 2:15

God created the first man holy. He was pure and reserved for God’s purposes. He was free from sin and in perfect relationship with God. Adam was the peak of God’s creation and was given the responsibility of working under God’s direction. His work was to care for creation. This perfect relationship was lost when Adam and Eve disobeyed (Genesis 3:6, Genesis 3:14-19).

(KJV) Genesis 2:9

And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

TREE OF LIFE / GENESIS 2:9

Two trees in the garden had special importance.

  1. The “tree of life” was probably intended to make physical death impossible. It is related to eternal line in Genesis 3:22 (Revelation 2:7). God’s people will have access to the tree of life in the new heaven and new earth (Revelation 2:7; 22:2).
  2. The “tree of the knowledge of good and evil” was designed to test Adam’s faith and obedience to God and His commands (Genesis 2:16). God created humans as moral beings with the ability to freely choose. We choose whether to love and obey our Creator, or to disobey and rebel against His commands, guidelines and instructions.

God gave life to human beings in a special way that was different from all other living things. He specifically gave His life and breath to the first man, making human life higher than and in a different category from all other forms of life. There is a unique relationship between supremely holy God and human life (Genesis 1:26-27; Genesis 1:26). God is the ultimate source of human life.

THE ACCOUNT – THE LORD GOD / GENESIS 2:4-6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 2:4-6

These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,

And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.

But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.

THE ACCOUNT – THE LORD GOD / GENESIS 2:4-6

THE ACCOUNT

This second account of creation (Genesis 2:4-25) does not contradict Genesis 1:1 – Genesis 2:3. It explains in greater detail the creation of man and woman, their environment and the and the results of their sin and rebellion against God. Genesis 2 gives the chronological details, or the specific order in which things occurred.

THE LORD GOD

Another name for God is introduced in Genesis 2:4, the name “LORD” (Hebrew YHWH, “Yahweh”). Elohim, the general name given in Genesis 1:1, emphasizes God’s greatness and power. But “LORD” is the personal name God uses to reveal Himself to His own covenant people. The name reflects His love and concern for the human race. It is used in situations where He is seen in direct relationship to His people or to nature. The word “LORD God” coupled together point to God as the all-powerful Creator who has entered into a loving covenant (“life agreement”) relationship with humankind (Genesis 2:9-25; Exodus 6:6; Leviticus 11:44-45; Isaiah 53:1; Isaiah 53: 5; Isaiah 53:6; Exodus 3:14).

GOD BLESSED THE SEVENTH DAY / GENESIS 2:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 2:3

And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

GOD BLESSED THE SEVENTH DAY / GENESIS 2:3

God blessed the seventh day (Sabbath) for both physical and spiritual reasons. It is to be a special day of rest and a memorial, or occasion for reflection and praise to Him, for the completion of His created work. God did not rest on the seventh day of creation for His own sake (as if He were tired), but as an example for us to follow. Rest is necessary for our spiritual, physical, mental and emotional well-being. Our Creator provided the Sabbath as a special blessing for His people, to renew and refresh them on a regular basis. He designed it as a day of rest, worship and fellowship with Him. The Sabbath principle is so important that God made it one of the Ten Commandments for those who would become His covenant people (Exodus 20:8-11; Exodus 16:29; 31:12-17; Deuteronomy 5:12-15; Matthew 12:1).

(KJV) Genesis 1:28

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

BE FRUITFUL AND INCREASE / GENESIS 1:28

God commanded man and woman to reproduce and to rule over the earth and the animal kingdom.

  1. The union of a man and a woman was to form family relationships. God stated this specific purpose and gave priority to the role of a godly family and the nurturing, or bringing up, of godly children in a world that turns from Him (Ephesians 5:21; Titis 2:4-5).
  2. God expected them to consecrate (set apart, commit or reserve) everything on earth to Him. He expected Adam and Eve to take care of it in a way that honored Him (Psalms 8:6-8; Hebrews 2:7-9).
  3. God placed the earth’s future under their authority. When they defied God and rejected His instructions, they brought ruin, hardship and suffering to all creation (Genesis 3:14-24; Romans 8:19-22).
  4. Jesus Christ alone will restore the earth to its perfect purpose when He returns at the close of history (Romans 8:19-25; 1 Corinthians 15:24-28; Hebrews 2:5-8; Revelation 21:1).

THERE WAS EVENING, AND THERE WAS MORNING – THE FIRST DAY / GENESIS 1:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 1:5

And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

Finding Rhythm in the Rhythm of Creation: The Beauty of the First Day

Have you ever wondered why God chose to structure the creation story with such a rhythmic, repeating beat? Six times in the very first chapter of Genesis (Genesis 1:5, 8, 13, 19, 23, 31), we encounter the exact same cadence: “And there was evening, and there was morning…”

This phrase is not just a poetic transition. It is a foundational truth about how God establishes time, order, and hope in our lives.

The Mystery of the Yom

The Hebrew word used for day in this passage is yom. In biblical scholarship, this little word sparks big conversations.

  • A Literal Day: Many scholars believe these were literal, 24-hour periods Genesis 7;7; Matthew 17:1). They point out that the specific combination of “evening” and “morning” throughout Scripture almost always denotes a literal day.
  • An Age or Era: Others note that yom can represent an undetermined length of time—like a season or a harvest time. In this view, “evening” marks the closing of one creative era, and “morning” signals the dawn of the next.

Whether you view these days as 24-hour periods or expansive ages, the theological heart of the passage remains unchanged: God works with intentionality, progression, and perfect timing.

Why the Evening Comes First

In our modern world, we start our days when the alarm goes off in the morning. But in the biblical calendar, the day begins at sundown. Evening comes first.

There is profound spiritual comfort in this design. Before you accomplish a single task, before you prove your worth, and while you are completely asleep and helpless in the dark, God is already at work. The day begins with rest, not labor.

It reminds us that we do not have to generate our own light. Even when the darkness of night rolls in—whether literally or through a dark season of life—it is not a permanent state. In God’s economy, darkness is always the canvas for the coming dawn.

The Promise of the Next Morning

Every evening is met with a morning. The rhythm guarantees that darkness never has the final word. If you find yourself in an “evening” season right now—facing uncertainty, exhaustion, or grief—take heart in the rhythm established at the very dawn of time. God is already preparing the morning.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thank You for being a God of order, rhythm, and intentional design. Thank You that even before the sun rises, You are actively sustaining the world and watching over my life.

When I encounter evenings of darkness, doubt, or exhaustion, give me the grace to rest deeply in Your sovereignty. Remind my heart that the night is just the beginning of Your next work. I praise You for the promise of the morning and the new mercies that come with it. Secure me in Your perfect timing today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

IN THE BEGINNING GOD CREATED / GENESIS 1:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 1:1

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

IN THE BEGINNING GOD CREATED / GENESIS 1:1

The writer uses the phrase, “in the beginning,” with the definite purpose of drawing attention to the fact that all things had a real beginning. Other ancient religions refer to things being created from something else that was already existing. But the Bible reveals God as the One who created everything out of nothing. God is the One and Only true and eternal, self-existent God (having forever existed in Himself) who reveals Himself in the first verse of the Bible as the Creator of heaven and earth. As one continues through the Bible the full nature of God is explained. The Scriptures reveal the primary concepts (understandable ideas) that helps us know the nature of God. They reveal that He is all-powerful (Isaiah 40:15; Daniel 4:34-35). He is everywhere present (Psalms 139:7-10; Matthew 6:25-29). He is all-knowing (Ephesians 1:3-12; Romans 8:27-29). In addition to His full nature, God communicates His moral qualities. He is good (Psalms 89:49; 1 John 4:8), holy (Leviticus 11:44; Isaiah 6:1-5) righteous (Deuteronomy 32:4; Psalms 71:19). Other religions view history as an endless series of cycles. But the Bible presents history in a linear way, or with a definite beginning and a God-given goal. God had a plan in creation, and He will carry it out.

The first verse of the Bible contains several important truths.

  1. Since God is the source of all that exists, human beings and nature are not self-existent, but rather owe their ability to live and exist to Him.
  2. Everything that exists is good if it is in right relationship to God and dependent on Him (for its highest purpose).
  3. All life and creation can have eternal meaning and purpose.
  4. As the Creator, God has sovereign (supreme) rights, such as complete authority and control over all creation. That is, he can do whatever he desires in relation to all he has made. In a fallen, or damaged world, one in which people have chosen to defy God and go their own way, God exercises His rights by offering redemption. Redemption refers to God’s plan to “reclaim” or “restore” individuals from a state of rebellion against Him and bring them back into right relationship with Him (Exodus 6:6; 15:13; Deuteronomy 21:8; Luke 1:68; Romans 3:24; Galatians 3:13; 1 Peter 1:18).

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, We stand in awe of Your majestic power, recognizing You as the true, eternal, and self-existent God. Thank You for being the Author of our beginning and the anchor of our lives. Forgive us for the times we have tried to live independently of You, forgetting that every breath we take is a gift from Your hand.

We thank You that our lives are not caught in a meaningless cycle, but are part of Your divine, linear plan that moves toward a glorious goal. Help us to live in a right, dependent relationship with You so that we may fulfill the highest purpose You have designed for us. In a broken world, we take comfort in Your sovereignty, Your goodness, Your holiness, and Your righteousness. We trust Your supreme authority over our lives today and always.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
