BE BAPTIZED – WASH YOUR SINS AWAY / ACTS 22:16

BE BAPTIZED

Water baptism went along with the preaching of the gospel from the beginning of the church’s mission (Acts 2:38, 41). It was a ceremony used in the New Testament to make a public statement that a person was committing himself or herself fully to Jesus Christ. By going into the water “in the name of the Father…Son and …Holy Spirt” (Matthew 28:19) or “the name of the Lord Jesus” (Acts 19:5), believers visibly showed their faith to the entire Christian community.

  1. Water baptism “into Christ” (Galatians 3:27) or “in the name of Jesus Christ” (Acts 2:38; Matthew 28:19) was a sign that a person was identifying with Christ and that he or she now belonged to God. As God’s child, he or she now had a share in His life, His Spirit and His eternal inheritance with God (Romans 8:14-17; Romans 8:14; Romans 8:16; Galatians 3:26 – 4:7).
  2. Water baptism is a response to what Christ has done for us. To be valid, true repentance (admitting and turning from our own rebellious way and surrendering to God’s direction and purposes, Acts 2:38) and a personal faith in Christ (Colossians 2:12) must come before water baptism.
  3. Water baptism, when experienced with faith and devotion to Jesus as the supreme authority over one’s life, is a means of receiving grace (undeserved favor, help, acceptance, and enablement) from Christ (1 Peter 3:21)
  4. Water baptism is an outward sign and testimony of a person’s inward acceptance of Christ as Savior and Lord – the Forgiver of one’s sins and Leader of one’s life. It also is a sign of the cleansing of one’s life from sin and the washing away of guilt from all offenses toward God (Acts 2:38; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 3:21).
  5. Water baptism symbolizes how a follower of Jesus is identifying with Him in His death, burial, and resurrection from the dead (Romans 6:1-11; Romans 6:4; Colossians 2:11-12). This signifies an end (“death”) to a life of sin (Romans 6:3-4, 7, 10, 12; Colossians 3:3-14) and the beginning of a new life in Christ (Romans 6:4, 11; Colossians 2:12-13). Water baptism should indicate a commitment to a lifelong practice of turning from the evil and ungodly ways of the world (Romans 6:6, 11-13) and living a new life in the power of God’s Spirit – a life that reflects God’s standards of truth and right (Colossians 2:1-17).

WASH YOUR SINS AWAY

Paul surrendered his life to Christ and was spiritually saved on the Damacus road (Acts 9:5) His baptism was a public testimony of his forgiveness and spiritual transformation by God. It reflected his commitment to abandon his former God-defying life and to identify himself with the cause of Christ.

PROVE THEIR REPENTANCE BY THEIR DEEDS / ACTS 26:20

But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.

PROVE THEIR REPENTANCE BY THEIR DEEDS / ACTS 26:20

Paul did not preach, as dome do, that eternal salvation requires no more than an intellectual trust or belief in Christ and His death for our sins. While good works cannot save us spiritually (Ephesians 2:8-9), the sincerity of one’s faith is proven by his or her actions. The New Testament declares that in order for individuals to be saved, they must “repent and turn to God and prove their repentance by their deeds” (Matthew 3:8; Luke3:8).

YOU WILL RECEIVE POWER / ACTS 1:8

(KJV) Acts 1:8

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Charged with Heaven’s Power: Understanding Acts 1:8

In His final moments on earth, Jesus didn’t leave His followers with a checklist of rules or a strategic marketing plan for the Gospel. Instead, He left them with a promise that would completely alter human history: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

This is the foundational key verse of the entire book of Acts. It shifts our understanding of Christian living from human effort to divine empowerment. If you have ever felt inadequate to share your faith or ill-equipped to live out God’s purposes, Acts 1:8 is the antidote.

Dunamis: Power in Action

When Jesus promises “power,” the original Greek word used is dunamis. This isn’t just passive strength or inherent ability. It refers to a dynamic force at work—energy in action.

Throughout the Gospels and Acts, writer Luke emphasizes that this specific spiritual empowerment carries distinct markers. It includes the authority to break spiritual chains, drive out evil, and bring physical healing to the sick. These miraculous signs were never meant to be a spectacle. They served as the essential credentials accompanying the bold proclamation of God’s kingdom.

A Gift for the Equipped Believer

An important distinction in Luke’s writing is that the baptism in the Holy Spirit is not the same as the initial experience of salvation. Instead, it is a subsequent clothing of God’s power upon those who are already followers of Christ.

Salvation brings us into right relationship with God, but the baptism in the Spirit saturates us with the power to effectively communicate that reality to the world. The Holy Spirit is the ultimate communicator. He works within us to convince the world of sin, righteousness, and the truth of Christ’s resurrection.

Becoming True Witnesses

Jesus stated the exact outcome of this empowerment: “You will be my witnesses.”

The filling of the Holy Spirit fundamentally deepens our intimacy with the Father and the Son. It makes the presence of Jesus vibrantly real to our hearts. Out of that deep, internal relationship, our witness becomes natural and highly effective.

A true witness doesn’t just speak the truth; they live it. When we are immersed in the Holy Spirit—the Spirit of holiness—our lives become saturated with His purity and character. The traits of Christ’s love, truth, and right behavior naturally overflow into our daily actions.

Receiving this power requires a heart of true repentance and a life submitted to Jesus’ leadership. If we desire to see our communities transformed, we must move past our own limited strength and step into the dunamis power of God.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible promise of Acts 1:8. Forgive us for the times we have tried to fulfill Your purposes in our own strength and limited wisdom. We ask right now for a fresh outpouring and baptism of Your Holy Spirit in our lives.

Saturate us with Your holy character, and clothe us with the divine power needed to be effective witnesses for Jesus. Give us holy boldness to speak Your truth, and let our lives reflect Your love, purity, and power to a world in desperate need. May everything we do bring glory and honor to the name of Jesus. Amen.

SUFFER FOR MY NAME / ACTS 9:15-16

15 But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel: 16 For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name’s sake.

Chosen for the Gospel, Called to Suffer: Reflecting on Acts 9:15-16

When we think about the dramatic conversion of Saul on the road to Damascus, we often focus on the blinding light, the audible voice of Jesus, and the sudden transformation of Christianity’s fiercest persecutor into its greatest missionary. It is a breathtaking display of God’s sovereign grace. However, when the Lord speaks to Ananias about Saul’s future, He delivers a commission that challenges our modern definitions of blessing and success.

In Acts 9:15-16, the Lord says:

“Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.”

Saul—who would become the Apostle Paul—was not just given a mandate to preach. He was given a mandate to suffer. In the economy of God’s kingdom, the call to bear the name of Christ is intimately tied to the call to suffer for His sake.

The Paradox of Suffering in the Kingdom

For many of us, suffering feels like a sign of God’s absence or displeasure. But Scripture flips this perspective upside down. In Christ’s kingdom, enduring hardship for the Gospel is actually a badge of honor and a sign of God’s highest favor.

Throughout the New Testament, we are reminded that trials are not a detour from God’s will; they are the path through it. Jesus told His disciples to rejoice when they faced persecution (Matthew 5:11-12), and Paul himself would later write that we are fellow heirs with Christ “provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him” (Romans 8:17).

Suffering strips away our self-reliance and forces us to depend entirely on the grace of God. It is often the very catalyst for a fruitful, deeply impactful ministry. Just as a grain of wheat must fall into the earth and die to bear fruit (John 12:24), our willingness to endure hardship allows God’s comfort and power to flow through us to a hurting world (2 Corinthians 1:3-6).

The Daily Reality of “Dying to Self”

While we may not all face physical persecution or chains like Paul did, every follower of Christ is called to a daily form of suffering: the process of “dying to self.”

Dying to self means actively rejecting our sinful impulses, our selfish ambitions, and our desire for comfort above obedience. It is a daily decision to make ourselves unresponsive to the lures of sin and fully alive to the prompts of the Holy Spirit (Romans 6:2-11). Paul described this internal crucifixion by stating plainly, “I die every day!” (1 Corinthians 15:31).

This daily surrender is not a morbid or hopeless exercise. When we empty ourselves, we make room to be filled. By dying to our own desires, we allow the vibrant, resurrection life of Jesus to flow through us. Our willing sacrifices become the visual aid of God’s love to the people around us, carrying the message of salvation to those who desperately need it.

Boundless Eternal Rewards

If the story ended with suffering, it would be tragic. But God promises that our light and momentary afflictions are preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison. The hardships we endure today are directly linked to the crowns and rewards of heaven (2 Timothy 2:12).

Paul looked at his life of beatings, shipwrecks, imprisonments, and rejection, and still concluded that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us (Romans 8:18).

Are you facing hardship, opposition, or a painful season of self-denial for the sake of righteousness? Take heart. You are in good company. You are walking the same path as the “chosen instruments” who came before you, and your faithfulness is clearing the way for God’s power to move.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the profound reminder that You choose ordinary, broken people to be Your instruments in this world. Lord, we confess that we often run from discomfort and fear suffering. We ask that You transform our perspective, just as You transformed Saul’s. Grant us the courage to boldly carry Your name, no matter the cost.

Help us to die to ourselves daily—to lay down our pride, our comfort, and our selfish ambitions so that Your resurrection life can shine clearly through us. When we face trials, persecutions, or the quiet pains of obedience, give us the grace to endure with joy, knowing that our suffering is never in vain. May our lives be a fruitful testament to Your love, and may You receive all the glory. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.

THEY BELIEVED … THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST / ACTS 8:12

But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

They Believed: The Power of the Name of Jesus Christ

In Acts 8:12, we witness a profound spiritual turning point in Samaria. The scripture tells us that when the Samaritans believed Philip’s preaching concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.

This moment carries immense theological weight. The Samaritans fully met the conditions for receiving spiritual salvation, positioning them firmly as Christians even before the later, visible arrival of the Holy Spirit.

The Evidence of Genuine Saving Faith

Two unmistakable facts make it clear that the faith of the Samaritans was a genuine, saving faith—one that brought them into a legitimate, personal relationship with God.

  • Apostolic Validation: Both Philip, a deacon full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, and the apostles in Jerusalem considered the Samaritans’ faith to be entirely valid. It is unreasonable to think Philip would baptize and minister to people whose faith he suspected was insincere.
  • Public Identification: The Samaritans publicly acknowledged their commitment to Christ through water baptism. Scripture affirms that whoever believes and is baptized will be saved. While water baptism itself did not save them, it served as a vital means of identifying with Jesus’ death and resurrection, publicly testifying to their inner transformation.

Through this genuine faith, the Samaritans were spiritually born again, possessing the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit from the moment they believed.

Salvation vs. Empowerment

A common point of confusion arises because the Samaritans received the Holy Spirit several days later through the laying on of hands by Peter and John. However, this second event was not for their salvation.

Instead, it was an empowering reception of the Spirit, identical to what the disciples experienced at Pentecost. This was given to equip them with supernatural power to serve Christ and boldly spread His message. Throughout the Book of Acts, the term “receive the Spirit” is frequently used in this empowering sense, distinct from the initial moment of spiritual rebirth.

True faith in the name of Jesus Christ brings immediate citizenship into the kingdom of God. Like the Samaritans, our belief anchors us in salvation, while the continuous filling of the Holy Spirit empowers us to live out our divine calling.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the unchanging power of the gospel and the authority found in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. We thank You that through simple, genuine faith in Him, we are completely saved, redeemed, and welcomed into Your eternal kingdom.

Lord, help us to stand firm in the assurance of our salvation, just as the Samaritans did. We ask that You continually fill us with the power of Your Holy Spirit. Equip us with the wisdom, boldness, and strength needed to serve You and share Your truth with the world around us. May our lives be a public, powerful testimony to Your grace.

In the mighty and matchless name of Jesus Christ, we pray, Amen.

WHEN THEY HEARD THIS / ACTS 11:18

Peter’s speech silenced all objection (Acts 11:4-18). God had baptized the Gentiles (people of other nationalities who were not Jewish) in the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:45) with the convincing evidence of speaking in tongues (Acts 10:46). This was the only sign they needed to accept the Gentiles’ experience as authentic and real without a doubt.

THE HOLY SPIRIT CAME ON THEM / ACTS 19:6

And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

THE HOLY SPIRIT CAME ON THEM / ACTS 19:6

This event occurs about 25 years after the first outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (when God generously sent His Spirit to fill and empower His followers, Acts 2:4). Yet, the pattern of these twelve people receiving the fullness of the Holy Spirit is consistent with the pattern seen throughout the book of Acts (Acts 8:5-24).

  1. They had believed in Jesus and were born again by the Spirit (they had been spiritually renewed or “saved” and entered a personal relationship with Jesus).
  2. After they were baptized in water (Acts 19:5), Paul laid his hands on them, and they were baptized in the Holy Spirit.
  3. As the Holy Spirit came on them, they began speaking in tongues and prophesying (using their voice to honor God by inspiration of the Holy Spirit). The book of Acts never presents the outpouring of the Spirit without any outward evidence. Rather, it shows it to be an obvious and identifiable experience that could be verified by the initial physical evidence of speaking in tongues. This practice is a Holy Spirit-inspired way of speaking, praying, or praising God by which a Christian speaks in a language (Greek glossa) they have never learned (Acts 2:4; 1 Corinthians 14:14-15).

Peter and those with him considered speaking in unlearned languages, as inspired by the Holy Spirit, to be the convincing sign of the baptism in the Spirit. Just as God confirmed His actions at Pentecost by the sign of tongues (Acts 2:4), He causes the Gentiles in Cornelius’ house to speak in tongues as a convincing sign to Peter and the other Jewish believers.

God has no favorite nation or race, nor does He favor any individual because of nationality, birth, or position in life (James 2:1). God favors and accepts those from every nation and people group who turn from their own sinful ways, accept God’s forgiveness, yield their lives to Christ, and obediently follow His purposes for their (Acts 10:35; Romans 2:6-11). All who continue to live by this commitment will continue to experience God’s love and favor (John 15:10).

Power Released: Understanding the Baptism of the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:17)

In the book of Acts, we witness the explosive growth of the early Church. But more than just numerical growth, we see a structural blueprint for how the Holy Spirit operates in the life of a believer.

A pivotal moment occurs in Acts 8:17: “Then they laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.”

This moment reveals a profound truth about our spiritual walk: there is a beautiful, vital distinction between receiving the Spirit at salvation and being empowered by the Spirit for ministry.

The “Two-Stage” Experience is Normal

When the Samaritans believed the gospel, they genuinely accepted Christ as Savior and Lord. Yet, it wasn’t until Peter and John arrived and laid hands on them that they received the Holy Spirit in the same Pentecostal sense experienced in Acts 2.

This “two-stage” experience—first believing, then being filled—is a consistent pattern throughout the New Testament:

  • The Apostles: Believed in Jesus, yet were told to wait in Jerusalem for power from on high (Acts 1:8).
  • The Apostle Paul: Encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:5) and was filled with the Spirit days later when Ananias laid hands on him (Acts 9:17).
  • The Ephesian Disciples: Had accepted the message but were later baptized in the Spirit when Paul prayed for them (Acts 19:1-6).

There is no set timeline between saving faith and the baptism in the Spirit. As we see with the household of Cornelius in Caesarea (Acts 10), the transition can sometimes happen almost simultaneously.

Salvation vs. Empowerment

To understand this clearly, we must recognize what the baptism in the Holy Spirit is—and what it is not.

The Baptism in the Holy Spirit does not save us. Salvation requires repentance (admitting and turning from our sinful ways toward God) and yielding our lives to Jesus Christ. The moment you are saved, God’s Spirit immediately comes to live within you, sealing you and directing your life (Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 6:19).

Think of it this way:

  • Salvation puts the Holy Spirit into you for your own regeneration.
  • Baptism in the Spirit brings the Holy Spirit out of you for the empowerment of others.

Just as water baptism is an outward testimony of an inward salvation (Romans 6:4), the baptism in the Spirit provides the outward evidence of God’s powerful presence flowing through a believer’s life. It is vital for experiencing God’s full power, boldness, and purpose.

Moving from Well to River

If you are a believer, you have the Holy Spirit. But God desires that the Spirit within you moves from a well of living water for yourself into a rushing river that impacts the world around you.

Do not settle for a quiet, contained faith. Seek the overflowing empowerment that God promised to every believer. Ask Him to fill you afresh today so that His power can move through you to change lives.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of salvation and for sealing me with Your Holy Spirit the moment I believed. Lord, I desire to walk in the fullness of Your purpose and power. Just as You did for the believers in Samaria, I ask that You baptize me afresh in Your Holy Spirit. Let Your power overflow from my life so that I may be a bold witness for Jesus Christ. Bring Your Spirit out of me in powerful ways to impact those around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
