SLAVES, OBEY YOUR EARTHLY MASTER / COLOSSIANS 3:22

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Colossians 3:22

Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:

SLAVES, OBEY YOUR EARTHLY MASTER / COLOSSIANS 3:22

Paul does not approve of slavery, nor does he authorize revolt against masters. He simply instructs slaves and masters how to conduct themselves in a Christ-honoring way. By doing so, he attempts to change this undesirable situation from within (Philemon 1:10; Philemon 1:12; Philemon 1:14; Philemon 1:15-16; Philemon 1: 17-19; Titus 2:9-10). In the meantime, Paul aims to regulate it to the benefit of all involved (Ephesians 6:5-9; Titus 6:1-2; Titus 2:9-10; 1 Peter 2:18-19).

SAUL WHO WAS ALSO CALLED PAUL – PAUL FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / ACTS 13:9

(KJV) Acts 13:9

Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him,

SAUL WHO WAS ALSO CALLED PAUL – PAUL FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / ACTS 13:9

SAUL WHO WAS ALSO CALLED PAUL

Saul was a Jewish name, a form of the Hebrew Sha’ul, meaning “asked for.” Paul is a form of the Latin Paulus, meaning “little.” After Paul received a fresh and special filling of the Holy Spirit he became a senior leader of the mission to the Gentiles (those of all nations who are not Israelite or Jewish). This ministry among the Gentiles may be the reason he chose to be known by his Roman name, Paul. Some commentators suggest that because Paul did not want to have a following or a church to be based around himself, he wanted to be known as “the little one.” He wanted to honor and exalt Christ and keep him at the center of the church’s attention – which Paul certainly did.

PAUL FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

PAUL, FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

One may already be baptized in the Spirit, as was Paul (Acts 9:17), yet in times of special need may also receive fresh fillings with the Spirit. Such repeated fillings are necessary,

  1. In confronting opposition to Christian ministry (Acts 4:8; Acts 4:12).
  2. In advancing the massage of Christ (Acts 4:8; Acts 4:31).
  3. In directly challenging Satan’s activity (Acts 13:9; Acts 13:52). Repeated and ongoing fillings with the Spirit should be the normal experience for all Christians who are baptized in the Holy Spirit.

I AM WITH YOU / MATTHEW 28:20

(KJV) Matthew 28:20
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

I AM WITH YOU / MATTHEW 28:20

This promise is Christ’s assurance to His followers who are actively involved in reaching and “winning” those who are spiritually lost (gaining them for Christ’s kingdom) and teaching them to obey His standards of truth. Jesus has risen from the dead and is now alive and active in His followers’ lives. God is personally interested in each one of His children and has promised to be with them in the person of the Holy Spirit (John 14:16; John 14: 26). God is also with us through His Word (John 14:23).

No matter what your status or condition – rich, poor, weak, humble, famous or relatively unknown – H cares for you and watches every detail of your life with loving care. He knows and understands your difficulties and struggles, and He will give you the strength to endure anything with His help (2 Corinthians 12:9). In fact, God’s presence can fill every believer with joy in any circumstances (Psalms 16:11; 21:6). It is both challenging and comforting to know that we cannot escape God’s presence (Psalms 139:7). Jesus’ promise to be “with you” is the Christian’s answer to every fear, every doubt, every trouble, every heartache and every discouragement.

For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever; 16 Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?

AS A DEAR BROTHER / PHILEMON 1:15-16

Slavery cannot exist among God’s people who have seen the truth of Christian brotherhood and experienced the personal spiritual freedom that comes from knowing Jesus. Onesimus must no longer be treated as a slave, but rather as a fellow believer and dear brother – one who in God’s sight is equal with Paul and Philemon (Colossians 3:22).

Onesimus should be set free if he so desires. The ethics and law of love demanded in the message of Christ point to this fact. Yet, Paul himself does not state it directly or make this demand. He wants Philemon and all master’s to act voluntarily in Christian love.

SENDING HIM BACK TO YOU / PHILEMON 1:12

Paul was not giving his approval of slavery, but he did not want to remove the responsibility from Philemon to do what is right. The New Testament did not encourage a direct movement to free the slaves, even Christian slaves, not did it authorize a revolt of slaves against their masters. To initiate such an effort in the socio-political conditions, particularly of the Roman Empire, during New Testament times would have destroyed the church and the cause of Christ. Instead of direct confrontation, guidelines were laid down for both the Christian slave and Christian master that would finally tear away the foundation for slavery from within and lead to its end (Philemon1:10, 12, 14-17, 21; Philemon 1:10; Philemon 1:11; Colossians 3:22, Titus 2:10).

Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:

USELESS – USEFUL / PHILEMON 1:11

This is a wordplay on the meaning of Onesimus’ name, which means “useful”. With Onesimus as a slave, the situation was really of no benefit to anyone in a way that really mattered. But now the Onesimus is a Christian, his life, companionship, encouragement and service for God could be a great blessing to Philemon, just as he was to Paul. Yet, this would only be of full benefit if Philemon received Onesimus back as a Christian brother rather than simply a servant.

Onesimus, a slave belonging to Philemon, had run away, possibly taking with him some of his master’s goods (Philemon 1:15-16, 18-19; Philemon 1:1-2; Philemon 1:6). Somehow, he reached Rome, where he met Paul and accepted a personal relationship with Christ under Pul’s ministry. Paul now writes this letter, asking Philemon to take Onesimus back with kindness, love and forgiveness.

That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.

BE ACTIVE IN SHARING YOUR FAITH / PHILEMON 1:6

Among the most rewarding experience in the Christian life is the privilege of introducing others to Jesus. Those who actively communicate their faith both in actions and words are fulfilling Jesus’ Great Commission to take His message to all the world (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15). Anyone who has had the opportunity to lead another person to faith in Jesus Christ knows the tremendous sense of joy, purpose and fulfillment that comes from helping someone enter a personal relationship with God. Leading others to Christ is perhaps the highest good we are influential in helping others receive eternal life, we gain “a full understanding of everything good we have in Christ” (Philemon 1:6).
