NINETY-NINE YEARS OLD / GENESIS 17:1

(KJV) Genesis 17:1

And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

NINETY-NINE YEARS OLD / GENESIS 17:1

Abram was now ninety-nine years old, and Sarai was long past the age of having children. But thirteen years after Ishmael’s birth and twenty-four years after God’s original promise, the Lord appeared to Abram with a message and a demand.

  1. God revealed Himself as “God Almighty” (Hebrew El Shaddai), meaning that He was all-powerful and that nothing was impossible with Him. As God Almighty, He could fulfill His promises even when there seemed to be no natural way to fulfill them. Therefore, God would bring Abram’s promised son into the world by a miracle (Genesis 17:15-19; 35:11; Isaiah 13:6; Romans 4:19; Hebrews 11:12).
  2. God demanded that Abram follow Him and be “blameless” (completely dedicated to doing God’s will). Just as Abram needed faith to receive God’s covenant, he also had to make a sincere effort to please God in order for the covenant blessings to continue (Genesis 22:16-18). In other words, Abram had to prove his faith by obeying God (Romans 1:5) or he would disqualify himself from being a part of God’s eternal purposes. God’s promises and miracles will be fulfilled only when His people are completely dedicated to living as He desires and committed to following His plan (Genesis 5:24; Genesis 6:9; Deuteronomy 13:4; Matthew 17:20).
