And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.
The Danger of Compromise: “Never Drove Them Out Completely”
The Cost of Incomplete Obedience
Under Joshua’s leadership, Israel won massive victories and destroyed many ungodly Canaanite strongholds. Yet, after his death, a dangerous shift occurred. Scripture records a tragic reality in Judges 1:28: “And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.”
They left a large number of Canaanites remaining in the land (Judges 1:1; Judges 1:28-30, 32-33, 35). God had explicitly commanded Israel to remove these nations completely because of their deeply immoral, destructive, and lustful form of pagan religion (Deuteronomy 7:2-4). God knew that coexisting with evil would eventually corrupt His people.
Israel thought they had the situation under control. They were “strong,” so they chose profit over purity by taxing their enemies instead of obeying God.
The Slow Slide into Ruin
Compromise rarely destroys us overnight. It is a slow, quiet drift. Because Israel failed to clear the land completely, they gradually tolerated, accepted, and eventually joined in the ways of the Canaanites.
What they tolerated in one generation became what they celebrated in the next. Over a period of time, this spiritual compromise brought absolute ruin, bondage, and defeat to the nation. The very people they refused to drive out became thorns in their sides and a snare to their souls.
What Are You Tolerating?
This history is a warning for us today. We often tolerate “small” sins, unhealthy habits, or toxic mindsets, thinking we can control them. We put our compromises “to tribute” by managing them instead of eliminating them.
Partial obedience is still disobedience. God calls us to radical holiness because He loves us and knows that what we refuse to drive out will eventually drive us to ruin.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Forgive me for the areas in my life where I have settled for partial obedience. Search my heart today and reveal any compromise, hidden sin, or toxic habit that I have allowed to remain. Give me the spiritual courage and strength to drive these things out completely, refusing to tolerate what dishonors You. I desire total victory and purity in my walk with You. Protect my heart from the slow drift of compromise, and let my life be wholly dedicated to Your truth.
