(KJV) John 20:28
And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
My Lord and My God: Recognizing the Divinity of Jesus Christ
Have you ever experienced a moment that completely shattered your doubts and transformed your perspective forever? In the Gospel of John, we witness one of the most powerful turnarounds in human history. Thomas, a disciple plagued by grief and skepticism, stands face-to-face with the resurrected Jesus. Touching the wounds of the Savior, his doubts instantly vanish, and he cries out with a confession that echoes through the centuries: “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28).
This is not just an emotional exclamation. It is the absolute foundation of the Christian faith. The truth that Jesus Christ is fully God, clothed in human flesh, is the bedrock upon which our spiritual salvation rests.
Without Jesus being truly God, while maintaining a perfect life as a man, He could not have provided the perfect, permanent atonement—the ultimate “sin-covering” sacrifice—for the sins of the world. He had to be man to die in our place, and He had to be God for that sacrifice to hold eternal, infinite value.
Scripture leaves no room for ambiguity. From Genesis to Revelation, God’s written Word continually points to and declares the deity of Jesus Christ through several undeniable truths.
1. He Bears the Divine Names and Titles of God
The Bible consistently gives Jesus names and titles that are strictly reserved for the Almighty. He is explicitly called God in John 20:28, Isaiah 9:6, Romans 9:5, Titus 2:13, and Hebrews 1:8. Furthermore, He is revealed as:
- The Son of God: Affirming His identical nature with the Father (John 5:25; Matthew 16:16-17).
- The Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End: Eternal titles belonging only to the Creator (Revelation 1:8; Revelation 1:17; Revelation 22:13).
- The Holy One: (Hosea 11:9; Acts 3:14).
- Lord of All and Lord of Glory: (Psalms 24:8-10; 1 Corinthians 2:8).
2. He Receives Worship and Prayer
In Jewish tradition, worshipping anything or anyone other than Yahweh was the ultimate blasphemy. Yet, Jesus routinely receives worship as God, and He never corrects those who bow before Him (John 5:23; 13:13; Matthew 14:33; Luke 5:8). Throughout the New Testament, we also see believers addressing their prayers directly to Jesus, trusting in His divine omnipresence and power (Acts 7:59; 1 Corinthians 1:1-2; 2 Corinthians 12:8-9).
3. He Performs Actions Only God Can Do
Jesus did not just claim authority; He demonstrated it by executing roles that belong solely to the Creator.
- Creation and Sustenance: He is the creator and sustainer of the universe (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16-17; Hebrews 1:3).
- Forgiveness: He forgives sins, a prerogative that belongs to God alone (Mark 2:5, 10).
- Eternity and Judgment: He is the giver of resurrection life and the ultimate judge of all humanity (John 5:21-29; Matthew 25:31-46).
- Salvation: He provides eternal life to those who believe (John 10:28; 17:2).
4. He Fulfills Old Testament Prophecies of Yahweh
The New Testament repeatedly reveals how Old Testament statements about the Lord God are actually prophetic truths about Jesus. When we compare Scripture with Scripture, the mystery unfolds beautifully:
- The Lord as the Shepherd in Psalms 23:1 is revealed as Jesus the Good Shepherd in John 10:11.
- The eternal Creator of Psalms 102:24-27 is identified as the Son in Hebrews 1:10-12.
- The Lord of hosts who becomes a stumbling stone in Isaiah 8:13-14 is applied directly to Christ in 1 Peter 2:7-8.
5. His Perfect Life and Resurrection Confirm His Divinity
Christ’s absolute sinlessness and complete separation from evil testify to His divine nature (Luke 1:35; Hebrews 4:15). Finally, the ultimate exclamation mark on His identity was His miraculous resurrection. By breaking the chains of death, He was powerfully declared to be the Son of God (Romans 1:4; 2 Timothy 1:10).
Our Response to the King
Because the evidence is conclusive, we cannot treat Jesus as merely a good moral teacher or a historical prophet. We must respond to Him exactly as we respond to God the Father. Like Thomas, our lives must be defined by total surrender. We are called to believe in Him, worship Him, pray to Him, serve Him, and love Him with all our hearts.
He is not just a savior in a theological textbook. He is alive, He is reigning, and He is worthy of your life. Can you look at Him today and say, with total conviction, “My Lord and my God”?
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the glorious truth of Your Word, which reveals to us the beautiful majesty of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Our hearts bow in awe today as we recognize that Jesus is indeed our Creator, our Sustainer, our Savior, and our God. Thank You, Lord Jesus, for living the perfect life we could not live, and for offering Yourself as the flawless sacrifice to cover our sins and grant us eternal life.
Forgive us for the moments when doubt or distractions blur our vision. Like Thomas, overwhelm our skepticism with Your living presence. Increase our faith so that we may serve You, love You, and worship You with everything we have. We surrender our lives to Your lordship today, declaring proudly and gladly that You are our King. In the mighty and holy name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and our God, we pray, Amen.
