(KJV) Colossians 4:6

Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

As Christians, our speech must be pleasant, encouraging, kind and gracious – worthy of being identified with Christ. It should set an example of godliness and decency for all who hear, and it should always speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). This kind of conversation results from the work of God’s grace (His undeserved favor, love and spiritual enablement) in our hearts. “Seasoned with salt” is a conversation that is right for the occasion, wholesome, marked by purity and free from corruption (Colossians 3:8; Ephesians 4:29). Like salt, it should enhance and add flavor in a spiritual sense, giving people a thirst and appetite for God (Matthew 5:13). Graceful speech, however, does not rule out stern words, when necessary, to challenge and oppose the enemies of Christ (Matthew 23: Acts 15:1-2; Galatians 1:9).
