(KJV) Luke 12:47-48

And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

BEATEN WITH FEW BLOWS / LUKE 12:47-48

Just as there will be degrees of reward in heaven (1 Corinthians 15:41-42), so there will also be degrees of punishment in hell. Those who are eternally lost and condemned spiritually will somehow experience different levels of punishment according to how they handled or disregarded their God-given privileges and responsibilities in life (Matthew 23:14; Hebrews 10:29).

THE POWER OF THE LORD WAS PRESENT / LUKE 5:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

THE POWER OF THE LORD WAS PRESENT / LUKE 5:17

The word translated “power” (Greek dunamis) means “might, power or strength.” In the New Testament, it is most often used of God’s power. The plural, dunameies, is used to describe Jesus’ miracles. The gospel (“good news” and message) of Christ is God’s power for salvation (Romans 1:16). The Holy Spirit gives powerful gifts and ministries in and through Christ’s followers. The power (dunamis) of God is directly related to the ongoing healing ministry of Jesus through His church (Acts 4:33; Acts 5:12-16; 6:8).

(KJV) Luke 19:41

And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,

SAW THE CITY, HE WEPT / LUKE 19:41

Jesus, knowing that the people and their leaders expect a political Savior and will ultimately reject Him as God’s promised Messiah, weeps in pity for the people who will soon suffer terrible judgment. The word “wept” in Greek means more than shedding tears. It suggests deep sorrow, the heavy sobbing of a soul in agony. Jesus, as God, reveals not only His own feelings, but also His Father’s broken heart over the spiritual lostness of the human race and its refusal to turn to God and accept His gift of salvation (Mark 11:9).

THIS WOMAN … SATAN HAS KEPT BOUND / LUKE 13:16

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

THIS WOMAN … SATAN HAS KEPT BOUND / LUKE 13:16

According to Jesus, it is a most serious offense against God when a person refuses to recognize and respond to suffering people (Luke 13:11-14). Jesus teaches that people are imprisoned by sin, sickness and spiritual death and are in distress and great need (Luke 13:11; Luke 13:16; Matthew 4:23; Acts 26:18). Today we are in serious danger of becoming unconcerned and insensitive to the world’s misery and suffering – particularly spiritually. While many people and organizations appear to be more involved than ever in charitable causes and humanitarian efforts, the media continued to pollute the culture with images of immorality and violence as a form of entertainment. As a result, the general society is deceived into thinking that they are all right, but in reality, they are becoming more insensitive and unconcerned about the value of human life and individuals, real needs. True followers of Christ will be like their Master – able to recognize the true threats and distresses of life and to respond with real help for people’s spiritual needs (Luke 10:33-37; Romans 8:22).

HIS HEART / LUKE 6:45

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 6:45
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

HIS HEART / LUKE 6:45

The heart, representing the center of our being and who we really are inside, determines our outward behavior and must be changed or converted in order to conform to God’s standards and purposes (Mark 7:20-23). Without inward change, no one can do God’s will and fulfill His purposes for his or her life (Jeremiah 24:7; 31:33; 32:39; Ezekiel 36:23, 27; Matthew 7:16-20; 12:33-35; 15:18-19; 21:43; Luke 1:17; Romans 6:17). Contrary to the beliefs and opinions of many in the world, humankind is not basically “good at heart.” The Bible is clear that apart from God the heart is wicked and deceitful (Jeremiah 17:9). Since the first humans defied God and sin entered the world – affecting all people – our hearts are not to be trusted if they are not under God’s control.

THE LORD’S GREAT SORROW / LUKE 13:34

Jesus’ tears (Luke 19:41) over Jerusalem’s stubbornness are a testimony to the freedom of the human will (free choice, desire, intention) to resist God’s grace and will (Luke 19:41; Acts 7:51; Romans 1:8-32; 2:5).

THE KINGDOMS OF THE WORLD / LUKE 4:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

THE KINGDOMS OF THE WORLD / LUKE 4:5

Satan tempts Jesus with the offer of rulership over all the kingdoms of the world, a proposal that Jesus rejects. This could be viewed as an appeal for material wealth, possessions, and power.

  1. Jesus’s kingdom in this age is not a worldly kingdom (John 18:36-37).  Throughout His ministry, Jesus would refuse to seek a kingdom for Himself by the worldly methods of compromise, earthly power, political maneuvering, external violence, or personal popularity.
  2. Jesus’ kingdom is a spiritual one, established in the hearts of His people, who have also refused to follow the ungodly ways of the world. As a heavenly kingdom,
  3. It is gained through suffering, self-denial, humility, and meekness – the opposite of how worldly people pursue power.
  4. It requires surrendering ourselves as living and holy sacrifices (Romans 12:1) – completely devoted and obedient to God and His purposes.
  5. It involves a battle against Satan, sin, temptation, and evil using spiritual weapons (Ephesians 6:10-20).
  6. It means resisting conformity to the beliefs, behaviors and lifestyles that are common in the world (Romans 12:2).
  7. Satan’s appeal to worship him was an attempt to get Jesus to take a quick route to world domination – to avoid the humility and sufferings that would lead Jesus’ death on the cross. That is to say, the devil was trying to get Jesus to lay aside His entire purpose for coming to earth (Matthew 4:10). Christ’s willingness to face all the difficulties that lay ahead is an example to all believers. He taught us that there are no shortcuts to fulfilling God’s perfect purposes for our lives, not matter how tempting the options may seem.

JESUS, FULL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT / LUKE 4:1-2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 4:1-2

And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.

JESUS, FULL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT / LUKE 4:1

Jesus was empowered and led by the Spirit when He encountered Satan’s temptation.

TEMPTED BY THE DEVIL

One aspect of Jesus’ temptation revolved around what kind of Messiah, or Savior, He would be and how He would use His anointing (His authority and empowerment) from God. (Many Jews would reject Him because He did not fulfill their expectations of a political “Savior” who would step forward with military might and free them from Roman rule.).

  1. Satan tempted Jesus to use his power to serve his own self-interest (Luke 4:3-4) to gain glory and power over the nations instead of accepting the humility and suffering that was ahead for him (Luke 4:5-8). This was an opportunity for him to satisfy the people’s expectation for a charismatic Messiah (Luke 4:9-11).
  2. Satan still tempts Christian leaders to use their spiritual authority, position, and ability for their own self-interest, to establish their own reputation and power and to please people rather than God. Those who selfishly compromise with Satan have actually surrendered to his control.

Jesus turned away every one of Satan’s temptations by properly referring to God’s Word (“It is written”). If this was the effective strategy for Jesus, we certainly must know and rely on His Word as revealed to us in the Bible.

Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

HOLY SPIRIT DESCENDED ON HIM / LUKE 3:21-22

Jesus who from the beginning had been conceived by and filled with the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35), is now personally commissioned and empowered by the Spirit for His ministry. (Matthew 3:17).
