AARON AND HIS SONS / LEVITICUS 8:1-3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Leviticus 8:1-3

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments, and the anointing oil, and a bullock for the sin offering, and two rams, and a basket of unleavened bread; And gather thou all the congregation together unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

AARON AND HIS SONS / LEVITICUS 8:1-3

Leviticus 8 describes the ordination (official ceremony that assigns one to an office or position) of Aaron and his sons to the priesthood. In the Old Testament, a worshiper who approached God needed not only an offering (Leviticus 1 – 7), but also the service of a priest (1 Timothy 2:5), who acted as a mediator between the person and God. The book of Leviticus describes in detail the Levitical priesthood, which was made up of ministry and worship leaders who came from the family, or tribe, of Levi. This priesthood ultimately was fulfilled by Jesus Christ, the believer’s high priest (Hebrews 2:17).

  1. A priest was appointed to represent the people and act as a mediator between them and God (Hebrews 5:1). A priest’s purpose was to lead the worship ceremonies and help men and women approach God so they could worship and receive forgiveness (Hebrews 7:24-25; 10:14).
  2. The priest brought people “near to God” and provided opportunity for their relationship with Him by offering gifts and sacrifices for sin and by teaching God’s law (Deuteronomy 33:8-10; Hebrews 5:1; 8:3; 9:7, 13).
  3. Under the new covenant (God’s plan to bring people into a relationship with Himself by sending His Son, Jesus, to die for our sins and provide forgiveness), a priest’s service is no longer needed. (The New Testament includes no priestly ministry among the ministry gifts listed in Ephesians 4:11.) That is because Jesus Christ is now the high priest of the new covenant (Hebrews 9:15-22), replacing the imperfect Old Testament priesthood. He is a perfect priest “forever” (1 Timothy 2:5: Hebrews 7:25; 9:23-28).

WAVE OFFERING / LEVITICUS 7:30

(KJV) Leviticus 7:30

His own hands shall bring the offerings of the Lord made by fire, the fat with the breast, it shall he bring, that the breast may be waved for a wave offering before the Lord.

WAVE OFFERING / LEVITICUS 7:30

The “wave offering” was the priests’ portion of the fellowship offering. It was waved toward the sanctuary as a sign of dedication to God and then waved toward the one who offered it or toward the priest, indicating that God was now putting it towards his or her use.

UNCLEAN … MUST BE CUT OFF / LEVITICUS 7:20

(KJV) Leviticus 7:20

But the soul that eateth of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, that pertain unto the Lord, having his uncleanness upon him, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.

UNCLEAN … MUST BE CUT OFF / LEVITICUS 7:20

Persons who were unclean or not prepared according to God’s command, and yet they participated in the sacrifices and offerings, were subject to God’s severe judgment. (Many places in this book describe when a person was unclean and not allowed to take part in a ceremony.) This rule was designed to teach how wicked and disgraceful it was for a person to act out of a false and insincere relationship with God. 1 Corinthians 11:27-30 where Paul warns that all who participate in the Lord’s Supper, for communion, in an unworthy manner (irreverent, self-centered, without proper regard for God or others, with no intention of giving up the sin and submitting to God) will be in danger of God’s judgment.

Bread made with yeast could be presented with the fellowship offering because the offering was not placed on the altar (Leviticus 2:11). In other offerings, yeast was forbidden because it often symbolized corruption.

(KJV) Leviticus 7:2

In the place where they kill the burnt offering shall they kill the trespass offering: and the blood thereof shall he sprinkle round about upon the altar.

AGAINST THE ALTAR / LEVITICUS 7:2

In the Old Testament, worship ceremonies, such as the sacrifices and offerings, were a means of communication between God and His people. They were active, symbolic prayers by which the people admitted their sin and requested God’s forgiveness. These ceremonies provided a way for the people to maintain and renew their relationship with God. They also allowed the Israelites to express gratitude and dedication to God. On God’s part, the ceremonies were dramatic symbols of His promises, warnings and teaching. Through these ceremonies God revealed His contempt for sin, His mercy toward the people and what He expected from them (Leviticus 1:2).

If a soul commit a trespass, and sin through ignorance, in the holy things of the Lord; then he shall bring for his trespass unto the Lord a ram without blemish out of the flocks, with thy estimation by shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for a trespass offering.

GUILT OFFERING / LEVITICUS 5:15

This offering was required when someone intentionally (willfully and on purpose) or unintentionally (not willfully and not on purpose) violated another person’s property rights (Leviticus 5:14 – 6:7; Joshua 7:1; 22:20). It was also necessary for a person who accidentally broke any of God’s commands (Leviticus 5:17). Along with the offering the person who committed the wrong had to bring a fair and reasonable repayment, plus a twenty percent fine (Leviticus 5:16; 6:5).

But if he be not able to bring two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, then he that sinned shall bring for his offering the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering; he shall put no oil upon it, neither shall he put any frankincense thereon: for it is a sin offering.

FINE FLOUR FOR A SIN OFFERING / LEVITICU 5:11

The shedding of blood in the sin offering was important because it pointed ahead to Jesus’ death on the cross for our sins. But what about those who were so poor that they could not afford a goat or a lamb for an offering? God provided a way for them. They could bring doves or young pigeons instead of goats or lambs. If they were too poor to do that, they could bring a small amount of fine flour and God would accept that as a sin offering (“nearly” in Hebrews 9:22; Hebrews 10:1-10).Even with all of these detailed offerings and sacrifices, Christ’s death on the cross is the only perfect sacrifice that can really take away sin (Hebrews 10:4, 12, 14).

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Leviticus 5:5

And it shall be, when he shall be guilty in one of these things, that he shall confess that he hath sinned in that thing:

HE MUST CONFESS / LEVITICUS 5:5

To confess sin means to admit to God that we have gone our own way and have failed to reach His standard of holiness. We admit that our thoughts, words and actions are wrong. God requires confession in order to receive forgiveness (Hosea 5:15; 1 John 1:9). Confession is genuine only if it is followed by true repentance (Proverbs 28:13; Daniel 9:3-19; Mark 1:5). True repentance requires that we turn away from sin and turn toward God. Confession usually occurs as a part of praying for forgiveness (Psalms 38:18; 51:1) and submitting, or yielding, to God’s judgment and mercy (Nehemiah 9:33). See Luke 15:11-24 for an example of genuine confession and forgiveness in the story of the lost son (Acts 19:18; James 5:16).

Even the whole bullock shall he carry forth without the camp unto a clean place, where the ashes are poured out, and burn him on the wood with fire: where the ashes are poured out shall he be burnt.

OUTSIDE THE CAMP / LEVITICUS 4:12

Burning the sacrificial animal “outside the camp” symbolized the complete removal of sin. The New Testament relates this to Jesus’ suffering outside the gate (outside Jerusalem) in order to purify His people through His own blood (John 19:17-18; Hebrews 13:11-15). Christians also are called to “go to Him outside the camp.” This means that we are to leave behind the sinful pleasures of this world and identify with Jesus. By doing this, we are able to press on toward a heavenly city and to offer the “sacrifice of praise” and thanksgiving to God (Hebrews 13:13-15; Hebrews 13:13).

SIN OFFERING / LEVITICUS 4:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Leviticus 4:3

If the priest that is anointed do sin according to the sin of the people; then let him bring for his sin, which he hath sinned, a young bullock without blemish unto the Lord for a sin offering.

SIN OFFERING / LEVITICUS 4:3

God required sin offerings so that those who sinned unintentionally, or without realizing that they had broken the law (Leviticus 4:2), could receive forgiveness. On the other hand, intentional sins were punishable by death (Numbers 15:30-31; Hebrews 10:28). A guilt offering (similar to the sin offering) was used for those who had committed a sin or injury for which they themselves could provide full compensation or repayment (Leviticus 6:2-6; 5:15). Sin offerings also were necessary for ceremonial cleansing (Leviticus 12:6-8; 14:13-17; Numbers 6:11).

  1. The sin offering was a prophetic symbol pointing toward Christ’s atoning (“sin-covering” and “forgiveness-providing”) death by which He took the punishment for our sins. Unlike the Old Testament sin offering, Christ’s death provided a perfect, once-and-for-all covering for sin (Isaiah 53; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Ephesians 1:7; Hebrews 9:11-12).
  2. New Testament followers of Christ need the ongoing and continuing atonement that Christ’s blood provides to cover mistakes, weaknesses and unintentional failings that result from our weak human nature (Psalms 19:12). However, sins resulting from direct rebellion against God and His Word will lead to judgment and spiritual death. Only as we confess and turn away from them do we show that we are depending on Christ’s atonement to provide the forgiveness we need (Hebrews 2:3; 10:26, 31; 2 Peter 2:20-21).
