PRIESTS / LEVITICUS 21:1

Leviticus 21 describes the qualifications and standards for those who were to serve as ministers for God’s people. They were to be examples of godliness both in their ceremonial duties and in their personal character and conduct. For this reason, God held them to a higher standard than was required for the rest of God’s covenant people.

LOVE HIM AS YOURSELF / LEVITICUS 19:34

Loving one’s neighbor included loving people of different backgrounds and nationalities. Love will show expression of kindness to those who come to live in one’s community. Jesus emphasizes the same thing in the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). God Himself loved His people while they were aliens (separated from Him). He expects us to do the same. God wants to bless all the nations of the world through His people (Genesis 12:3; John 3:16).

TWO KINDS OF MATERIAL / LEVITICUS 19:19

 Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.

TWO KINDS OF MATERIAL / LEVITICUS 19:19

Some of the laws in Leviticus applied only to Israel under the old covenant (Leviticus 19:19-25) – before Jesus came to die for our sins and fulfill God’s perfect plan of spiritual salvation. Other laws still apply to those under the new covenant (Leviticus 19:11-18, 26, 31; Matthew 5:17). Those laws that applied only to ancient Israel were to keep them from being absorbed into surrounding cultures that did not walk in holiness. For example, the ban on mixing two kinds of materials probably was based on the fact that pagan priests attempted to practice sorcery by mixing different types of fabrics into their garments. The verse as a whole communicates the principle of uncompromised or “unmixed” purity.

Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord.

LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR / LEVITICUS 19:18

“Neighbor” refers to anyone with whom we come into contact. This term is broader than just including someone who lives near us. This commandment regulating how God’s people treat others was pointed out by Christ (Matthew 22:39), Paul (Romans 13:9) and James (James 2:8). Leviticus 19:9-18 describes practical ways for us to show love and care for our neighbors.

BE HOLY / LEVITICUS / 19:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Leviticus 19:2

Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the Lord your God am holy.

BE HOLY / LEVITICUS / 19:2

The term “holy” suggests moral and spiritual purity. It means wholeness, separation from evil and dedication to God’s standards. God calls His people to be like Him and to reflect His character. To do this requires separating themselves from the ungodly customs and behaviors of the people around them and doing what God says is right. Love for God gives His people the will and desire to do this (Leviticus 11:44). This call to holiness was first given to Adam and Eve, who were created in God’s image, so they could reflect His character and relate to Him (Genesis 1:26). Every generation of believers should “be imitators of God” (Ephesians 5:1). Why? Because God says, “be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy” (Matthew 5:48; Romans 12:1-2).

Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

Sexual activity with a person of the same sex (Genesis 19:5) is described as a disgraceful offense to God (Romans 1:27). Some argue that since this restriction is part of Old Testament law it no longer applies. They relate it to regulations for washing and cleanliness, such as those in Leviticus 13 – 15, which are no longer necessary in the same way. The Canaanites sacrificed infants to their gods as part of their religious rituals. This practice was very offensive and was strictly forbidden by God (Leviticus 20:2-5; Jeremiah 32:35). Today the practice of killing unborn children for the sake of convenience or as a form of birth control is an equally offensive sin and evil in God’s sight.

None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness: I am the Lord.

HAVE SEXUAL RELATIONS / LEVITICUS 18:6

The translation “have sexual relation with” comes from a Hebrew phrase that literally means “uncover the nakedness of.” So it involves all forms of ungodly and impure sexual activity, including acts that fall short of sexual intercourse. This law prohibited any kind of sexual activity involving the body of another person who is not one’s lawful wife or husband. Such activity oversteps God’s boundaries of purity. Such conduct is a serious offense against Him and His law.
