We have had our share of up and downs but I'm forever grateful that he is the man God blessed me with. I am happy to report we have been married for 25 years. I love this space on the internet. I create blog posts about faith, my Christian Walk, and our life on the farm. I have learned from the Word of the Lord. I believe that there is power in transparency and that as children of God, we shouldn't hold anything back. Yes, even those raw and messy parts of our Life's Journey. Over the last several years, I have wrestled with my purpose, struggled with various sins, survived some severe injuries, and was diagnosed with severe illnesses that have stopped me in my tracks. Although these dark times have been tough, my walk with God and family has proven to be so fulfilling and sweet, regardless of any earthly circumstance. Christ is enough! IF THE EARTHLY TENT / 2 CORINTHIANS 5:1

For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

IF THE EARTHLY TENT

Paul uses the conditional clause, “if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed,” because he knows that Christ could return soon. In this case, he would not experience death. Rather, his body would be immediately transformed in going to be with Christ. The same possibility (either death or transformation) exists for Christ’s faithful followers today. Jesus has stated that we do not know the day or the hour of His return (Matthew 24:36, 42, 44); therefore, we must always be prepared. That fact should serve as a powerful motivation for holy living, characterized by moral and spiritual purity, separation from evil and complete devotion to God (Matthew 24:42; 1 John 3:2-3).

EARTHLY TENT … A BUILDING

  1. The term “earthly tent” refers either to our earthly body or our earthly lives, which are temporary and frail.
  2. The “building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands” likely refers to the general environment of the heavenly existence that will endure forever. It could also refer to a body prepared for believers in heaven while they await their resurrection body.

Some have used this passage to teach that after death and while awaiting resurrection, believers exist as bodiless spirits, vague shadows or naked souls without form. However, note that both Moses and Elijah on the Mount of Transfiguration appeared with visible heavenly bodies, even though they were awaiting their resurrection bodies (Matthew 17:2-3; Mark 9:2-4). In addition, in Revelation 6:9-11 souls in heaven (among whom are those killed for their faith during the tribulation period who are awaiting God’s final judgment on the wicked) are described as visible and wearing white robes.

THE SONS OF HAM / GENESIS 10:6-20

These verses list Ham’s descendants. They settled in southern Arabia, southern Egypt, the east shore of the Mediterranean Sea and the north coast of Africa. Canaan’s descendants (Genesis 10:15-19) settled in a territory that was given the name of Canaan. This land would later become the home of the Jewish people.

THE SONS OF JEPHETH / GENESIS 10:2-5

The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras. 3 And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah. 4 And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. 5 By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.

THE SONS OF JEPHETH / GENESIS 10:2-5

These verses list Japheth’s descendants. They went north and settled around the coastlands of the Black and Caspian Seas. They were the ancestors of the Medes, Greeks and the Caucasian races of Europe and Asia.

JUSTIFICATION THAT BRINGS LIFE FOR ALL MEN / ROMANS 5:18

The condemning judgment that resulted from sin, affecting all people, becomes a reality for each individual as he or she rejects God and His revelation written in their hearts (through their conscience) or revealed in His written Word (Romans 2:12-16). In the same way, spiritual salvation – the “justification that brings life” – is available to all people. But to become an effective reality, God’s gracious gift of life must be received by faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 5:17).

HOW MUCH MORE DID GOD’S GRACE / ROMANS 5:15

In Romans 5:12-21 Paul stresses the supreme and complete effectiveness of the spiritual salvation and restoration provided by Jesus Christ to undo the effects of humankind’s sin and rebellion against God. This is the real point of the passage: Adam brought sin and death; Christ brought grace and life (Romans 5:17). If human sin could cause that much death and destruction, how much more can God’s salvation provide life and restoration.

Before God ever gave His written law through Moses, the human race experienced death and separation from God. This was not because they disobeyed God’s spoken law (His direct command) with its death penalty, as did Adam (Romans 5:13-14: Genesis 2:17). Instead, it was because they were sinners by their own actions as well as by human nature, violating the law of conscience – their inner sense of right and wrong – that was written in their minds and hearts (Romans 2:14-15).

SIN ENTERED THE WORLD THROUGH ONE MAN / ROMANS 5:12

(KJV) Romans 5:12  

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

SIN ENTERED THE WORLD THROUGH ONE MAN / ROMANS 5:12

The first man, Adam, gave in to temptation and disobeyed God’s direct command. Therefore, sin, or rebellion against God, as an active principle or power gained entrance into the human race (Romans 5:17, 19; Genesis 3; 1 Corinthians 15:21-22).

  1. Two results followed: (a) Sin and corruption entered Adam’s heart and life and became part of his being. (b) Adam then passed on sin into the life-stream of the human race, corrupting all people from then on. All humans are now born into the world with an impulse and pull toward sin and evil; it is now part of our nature (Romans 5:19; 1:21; 7:24; Genesis 6:5; Genesis 6:12; Genesis 8:21; Psalms 14:1-3; Jeremiah 17:9; Mark 7:21-22; 1 Corinthians 2:14; Galatians 5:19-21; Galatians 5:21; Ephesians 2:1-3; Colossians 1:21; 1 John 5:19).
  2. Paul does not explain exactly how Adam’s sin is passed on to his descendants. Nor does he say that all people were present in Adam and that somehow, we all participated in his sin and inherited his guilt. Nowhere does Paul say that Adam was the representative head of his descendants (the human race) and that his sin was charged to all humanity. The fact is that all people follow their own sinful desires and go their own God-defying way. As a result, we all are guilty before God because of our own personal sin. The only teaching supported by the Bible is that men and women inherit a moral corruption and a strong pull toward sin and evil (Romans 6:1).
  3. Death entered the world through sin, and now all people are subject to death “because all sinned” (Romans 5:12, 14; 3:23; Genesis 2:17; 3:19). Both the immediate and final consequence of Adam’s original sin was spiritual death, which is separation from God.

WE WERE GOD’S ENEMIES

Man is the enemy of God, not the reverse. People have offended God with their sin; yet He is the One who provided the way to end the hostility and reunite us with Himself. He did the through the sin-forgiving sacrifice of His Son, Jesus (Romans 5:11; Colossians 1:21-22).

SAVED THROUGH HIS LIFE

Accepting God’s gracious gift of forgiveness, made available through Jesus’ personal sacrifice, is the first step of spiritual salvation (Romans 3:21-26; Romans 3:21; Romans 3:22; Romans 3:24; Romans 3:25; Romans 4:5-9; Romans 4:5). It is the point at which we begin to walk the path of personal companionship with Christ toward the destination of eternal life with Him. We continue to be saved as we live by faith and obedience of Christ. If God loved us enough to send His Son to die for us while we were His enemies (Romans 5:8), how much more, now that we are His children, will He make every provision to preserve our relationship with Him as we continue to live by faith. If we are forgiven and made right with God through Jesus’ sacrificial death, how much more does His resurrection from the dead guarantee our salvation and eternal life with God (Romans 4:22-5:2; 5:9-10; 1 Corinthians 1:30; Philippians 2:12-16; Colossians 3:3-4; 1 Thessalonians 1:10; 2 Timothy 2:12; James 1:12; Revelation 2:7).
