IF YOU CONTINUE IN YOUR FAITH / COLOSSIANS 1:23

(KJV) Colossians 1:23

If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

IF YOU CONTINUE IN YOUR FAITH / COLOSSIANS 1:23

Notice the ongoing human response of faith that Paul says is necessary for Christians to appear finally before Christ as “holy in His sight, without blemish and free from accusation” (Colossians 1:22). We must

  1. “Contine in our faith,” actively yielding our lives to Christ, obeying His Word and surrendering to His authority and purposes in all we do.
  2. Be “established and firm” in the message and teaching of Jesus and those He commissioned to deliver His original message as we have it in His Word, the Bible.
  3. Be “not moved from the hope held out in the gospel,” which means that we must not return to our former life of sin, hopelessness and spiritual destruction apart from Christ (Colossians 3:5-11; Hebrews 10:38).

RECONCILE TO HIMSELF ALL THINGS / COLOSSIANS 1:20

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Colossians 1:20

And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

RECONCILE TO HIMSELF ALL THINGS / COLOSSIANS 1:20

In a Biblical sense, “to be reconciled” means to be restored to a right relationship with God. However, this passage does not mean that Christ has automatically saved all people. Everyone still must choose for themselves whether to accept or reject that relationship. Those who reject Christ remain enemies of God (Romans 2:4-10) and are headed for eternity in hell. Only those who accept Christ’s forgiveness and yield their lives to Him are reconciled to God and saved. When the first humans sinned, not only was the spiritual harmony between God and people destroyed but also disorder and corruption came into all creation (Romans 8:9-22). When Christ died on the cross for our sins, He made peace possible between God and humanity, restoring people’s opportunity for a personal relationship with God through faith in Christ (Colossians 1:22; 2 Corinthians 5:18; 1 Peter 3:18). In the process, Christ also restored the harmony (potentially) of the physical world and everything in the universe (Colossians 1:16-18), though the full restoration will occur only after Christ returns to earth at the end of history (Romans 8:21; Revelation 20-21).

FIRSTBORN FROM AMONG THE DEAD / COLOSSIANS 1:18

(KJV) Colossians 1:18

And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

FIRSTBORN FROM AMONG THE DEAD / COLOSSIANS 1:18

Jesus Christ was the first to rise from the dead with a spiritual and immortal body (1 Corinthians 15:20). Others who were raised from the dead eventually died again (2 Kings 4:35; Luke 7:15; John 11:44; Acts 9:36-41; 20:7-11). On the day of His resurrection, Jesus became head of the church – the worldwide, all-time community of all true followers of Christ. The New Testament church began on that day, when the disciples received the Holy Spirit. The fact that Christ is the “firstborn from among the dead” gives the blessed hope to all believers that there will be a final resurrection of all those for whom He died (Christ died for all, and all will be raised again – those who accept Him will be raised to eternal life with Him, and those who do not accept Him will be raised to eternal punishment and separation from God; John 5:28-29).

BY HIM ALL THINGS WERE CREATED / COLOSSIANS 1:16

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Colossians 1:16

For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

BY HIM ALL THINGS WERE CREATED / COLOSSIANS 1:16

Paul affirms the creative activity of Christ.

  1. All things, both material and spiritual, owe their existence to the work of Christ as the active agent in creation: “Through Him all things were made” (John 1:3; Hebrews 1:2).
  2. In Him all things hold together and are supported, kept going, provided for (Colossians 1:17; Hebrews 1:3).
  3. Seven times in six verses Paul mentions “all creation,” “all things” and “everything,” stressing Christ’s supremacy and full authority overall. This includes any “thrones or powers or rulers or authorities,” which was likely a reference to the hierarchy (rank, organization, chain of command) of angels that was a prominent part of the false teaching that was coming into the Colossian church (Colossians 1:2; Colossians 2:18).

STRENGTHENED … ACCORDING TO HIS GLORIOUS MIGHT / COLOSSIANS 1:11-12

(KJV) Colossians 1:11-12

Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; 12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

STRENGTHENED … ACCORDING TO HIS GLORIOUS MIGHT / COLOSSIANS 1:11-12

In order to live in a manner worthy of being associated with and representing the Lord (Colossians 1:10), we must be strengthened by His power. This infusion of power is an ongoing experience of receiving from God His own lids by the presence of the Holy Spirit within us. Nothing else can enable us to overcome sin (the natural tendency to go our own God-defying way), Satan and the world (Philippians 4:13).

WE HAVE NOT STOPPED PRAYING FOR YOU / COLOSSIANS 1:9-12

(KJV) Colossians 1:9-12

For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; 12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

WE HAVE NOT STOPPED PRAYING FOR YOU / COLOSSIANS 1:9-12

This is one of Paul’s four great New Testament prayers, recorded under the inspiration of the Spirit (the other three are Ephesians 1:16-19; 3:14-19; Philippians 1:9-11). These prayers provide excellent examples of how to pray for others, such as our friends, our parents, our children, other Christians, missionaries, pastors, etc. We must pray that they come to

  1. Understand God’s will (Colossians 1:9).
  2. Gain spiritual wisdom.
  3. Live in a way that is holy (morally pure, spiritually whole, separated from evil and dedicated to God) and pleasing to the Lord.
  4. Bear fruit for Christ (serve Him effectively with the desired results in ministry and character).
  5. Be strengthened spiritually by the Holy Spirit.
  6. Continue in faith and righteousness (a right relationship with God and the power of His Spirit to do what is right by His Standard).
  7. Give thanks to the Father.
  8. Live with their hope focused on heaven.
  9. Experience Chrit’s nearness.
  10. Know and experience Christ’s love.
  11. Be filled with God’s fullness ( receive and experience all that He wants for us through a deeper relationship with Him.
  12. Show love and kindness to others.
  13. Discern between good and evil, right and wrong, truth and error.
  14. Be sincere and blameless.
  15. Await with eagerness the Lord’s return.

KNOWLEDGE OF HIS WILL / COLOSSIANS 1:9

Knowing God’s will – His desires and plans based on His character and purposes – results from knowing God Himself and developing a deep personal relationship with Him. Such a relationship grows out of spending consistent time in prayer – listening to and speaking with God – and the study of His Word. Our ability to recognize and understand God’s will comes as we apply His Word to the decisions, attitudes and actions of daily life. Only this kind of knowledge results in true spiritual wisdom and understanding that guides and transforms our hearts and lives as God desires (Colossians 1:9-11; Philippians 1:9)

FAITHFUL BROTHERS AT COLOSSE / COLOSSIANS 1:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Colossians 1:2

To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

FAITHFUL BROTHERS AT COLOSSE / COLOSSIANS 1:2

Paul wrote to the Colossians because false teachers were coming in among the believers in the church there and proclaiming that devotion to Jesus Christ and loyalty to the teachings of Christ’s apostles (Acts 14:4; 2:42) were not enough for a true Christian’s faith and spiritual salvation. This false teaching mixed human “philosophy and “tradition” with the gospel (Colossians 2:8) – the true message of Christ – and called for the worship of angels as mediators between God and humans (Colossians 2:18). These imposters (pretenders who presented themselves as true Christians) also demanded a strict obedience to certain Jewish religious requirements (Colossians 2:16, 21-23). They justified their misguided rulers by claiming to have received special revelation through visions (Colossians 2:18).

  1. The same basic philosophy behind these errors appears today in the teaching that Jesus Christ and the original message of the New Testament are not completely adequate to meet our spiritual needs (2 Peter 1:3).
  2. Paul speaks out boldly against this heresy (false teaching that contradicts the true and proven basis of faith as revealed in the Bible). He does so by showing that Christ is not only our personal Savior (the One who forgives sins and rescues us from spiritual death), but also the head of the church and Lord ( the supreme authority) of the universe and all creation. For this reason, Jesus Chist (and His power in our lives) – not human efforts, ideas or wisdom – rescues us from sin’s power, puts us in a right relationship with God and saves us eternally. We do not need any other mediator – human or spiritual – to go between us and God. We may approach Him directly.
  3. Being a believer means showing true faith in Christ and His message by actively yielding the guidance and keeping of our lives to Him, loving Him, obeying Him and living by His purpose. We must never add anything to the gospel – the “good news” and true message of Christ – nor support any other experience, teaching or philosophy that is offered in its place.
