 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

HIS ANOINTING TEACHES YOU / 1 JOHN 2:27

All true followers of Christ are given the “anointing” (Holy Spirit, 1 John 2:20) to set them apart as God’s children and to help lead them into truth (John 14:26; John 16:13). As believers remain in the right relationship with Christ and commit themselves to spending time in God’s Word, the Holy Spirit helps them understand its life-transforming truths and how these truths apply to their lives. John is not ruling out the involvement of genuine Bible teachers, but he is speaking against false teachers who said that the message of Christ needed to be supplemented with a “higher knowledge” that they claimed to possess (1 John 1:1; 1 John 2:3). John responded to this lie by reminding his readers that the message already revealed to them by the Holy Spirit working through Christ’s original messengers was the only reliable truth.

The Holy Spirit’s teaching through God’s Word does not involve revelation of “new” truth or the explanation of all difficult Bible passages to our personal satisfaction. The Spirit works to illuminate the truth already revealed in God’s Word, helping believers to apply that truth to their lives in practical ways. 

  1. All believers may study and know God’s truth and learn from each other through mutual teaching and encouragement (Matthew 28:20; Ephesians 3:18; Colossians 3:16).
  2. This passage points out three safeguards against doctrinal (belief and teaching) error: (a) remaining in the right relationship with God the Father and Jesus the Son according to His revelation in the Bible (1 John 2:24). (b) The truth and empowering of the Holy Spirit. (c) Fellowship (1 John 1:3) with other committed Christians. 
  3. God’s people do not need instruction from those who teach things contrary to or outside of true Biblical faith, which is what John means when he says, “you do not need anyone [else] to teach you.”
