FELLOWSHIP WITH US / 1 JOHN 1:3

(KJV) 1 John 1:3

That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

In our modern world, the word “fellowship” is often watered down. We associate it with casual small talk over coffee after a church service or gathering for a potluck dinner. But in the New Testament, fellowship means something far deeper, weightier, and infinitely more beautiful.

In 1 John 1:3, the Apostle John writes:

“We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.”

John invites his readers into a sacred bond. To understand the depth of this invitation, we must look at the Greek word he used: koinonia.

Literally translated, koinonia means “having in common.” It goes beyond mere socialization; it involves a deep, mutual sharing and active participation with other believers. Christians do not just hang out—we share a common life.

As followers of Christ, we share a massive foundation of eternal realities that the world cannot understand. We have fellowship because we have the most critical things in common:

• A Common Faith: We share a unified, saving belief in the truth of the gospel (Titus 1:4; Jude 1:3).
• A Common Grace: We participate together in God’s unearned favor, love, and supernatural help through Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 1:9; Philippians 1:7).
• A Common Indwelling: The same Holy Spirit lives within each of us, sealing us into one spiritual body (John 20:22; Romans 8:9, 11).
• A Common Empowerment: We share in the diverse gifts of the Spirit, given to build one another up (Romans 15:27).
• A Common Battle: We are locked in the same spiritual warfare against a defeated but active enemy, navigating the same trials and temptations (1 John 2:15-18; 1 Peter 5:8).

Because true fellowship is anchored in the absolute truth of who Jesus is and what He accomplished, it naturally has boundaries. Christ’s followers can have no true, God-honoring fellowship with those who reject the teachings of the New Testament faith (2 John 1:7-11; Galatians 1:9).

Light cannot have fellowship with darkness. When the core truth of Christ is denied, koinonia becomes impossible, because the “common ground” of the Holy Spirit and saving faith is missing. True biblical community requires us to guard the truth zealously so that our fellowship remains pure and anchored in God.

The beauty of koinonia is that our horizontal fellowship with one another is entirely dependent on our vertical fellowship with God. We are brothers and sisters because we share the same Father. When we lock arms in truth, grace, and spiritual warfare, we experience the fullness of joy that John promised. Let us move past superficial relationships and dive deep into the true, supernatural partnership of the saints.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the profound gift of koinonia. Thank You for drawing us out of isolation and into a sacred, shared life with You, Your Son Jesus Christ, and the global body of believers. We praise You for the common faith, unearned grace, and Holy Spirit that unite us. Help us to guard the truths of the New Testament diligently and to reject compromise. Empower us by Your Spirit to stand together in our spiritual battles, sharing our gifts and lifting one another up. May our fellowship with one another burn brightly as a testimony of Your love to a broken world. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
