START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) 1 John 1:2
(For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
Experiencing Eternal Life Today: A Reflection on 1 John 1:2
What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “eternal life”? For many of us, our minds immediately fast-forward to the future—pearly gates, streets of gold, and a distant heaven long after our time on earth is done. While that future hope is absolutely real, the Apostle John opens his first epistle with a radical truth: eternal life is not just a destination. It is a Person, and it is a reality you can experience right now.
In 1 John 1:2, we read: “The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.”
Eternal Life Has a Name
John doesn’t define eternal life as a checklist of rules or a cosmic insurance policy. He defines it in terms of Jesus Christ Himself. We see this beautifully mirrored in his Gospel account, where Jesus prays, “Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent” (John 17:3).
According to Scripture, eternal life is intimacy with the Creator. It is the vital, active, and personal relationship that begins the very moment you enter into faith through Jesus. You don’t have to wait until you die to start living the life of heaven; true life is available today.
A Present Reality, Not Just a Future Hope
When we view eternal life solely as a future reward, we miss the power of the gospel in our daily struggles. Knowing Christ intimately transforms how we live in the present. It brings peace into our anxiety, joy into our grief, and purpose into our mundane routines.
However, John is also careful to remind us that this connection requires active engagement. True life is found through an obedient faith. We cannot claim to share in His eternal life while actively walking in darkness (1 John 1:6-7). It requires a daily anchoring of our hearts in the truth of who Jesus is (1 John 2:22-25) and remaining safely under His guidance (1 John 5:20).
Are you merely waiting for heaven, or are you walking with the Living God today? Let us step out of the shadows, embrace a vital relationship with Jesus, and experience the fullness of the life He has already revealed to us.
A Closing Prayer for the Week
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for revealing true, eternal life to us through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Forgive us for the times we treat our faith as a distant insurance policy rather than a daily relationship. We ask that You deepen our intimacy with You this week. Help us to know You more clearly, to hear Your voice, and to walk in obedient faith. Let Your light expose any darkness in our hearts so that we can fully experience the abundant, eternal life that is already ours in Christ Jesus, Amen.
