(KJV) Philippians 3:8-11
Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; 11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
THAT I MAY GAIN CHRIST / PHILIPPIANS 3:8-11
These verses reveal the apostle’s heart and the essence of Christianity. Paul’s greatest longing was to know Christ and to experience his personal presence and companionship in a more intimate way. Nothing else in Paul’s life even compared to this passionately earnest desire. In fact, everything else was like worthless “rubbish” (Philippians 3:8) compared to knowing Christ better. In his pursuit of a deeper relationship with Christ, Paul’s highest aims were:
- To know Christ intimately as a person, as well as to understand His ways, experience His companionship, comprehend His nature and develop His character as revealed in God’s Word. True knowledge of Christ involves listening to and studying His Word but also applying and experiencing the Word (Philippians 1:9), It requires following the Holy Spirit’s guidance in faith and obedience. It means identifying with Christ’s character, concerns and purposes.
- To be found in Christ (Philippians 3:9), which means being united with Christ in such a way as to experience all the blessings and benefits of His character, power and promises (Philippians 1:10-11; 1 Corinthians 1:30). Paul wants his identity to be so completely wrapped up in his relationship with Christ that when others think of Paul, their attention is immediately drawn to Jesus.
- To know the power of His resurrection (Philippians 3:10), referring to the miraculous power that raised Jesus from the dead (Romans 8:11). Paul wanted to experience that same spiritually renewing, life-transforming, miracle-working, sin-crushing power in his own life and ministry (Romans 6:4; Ephesians 2:5-6). In the deepest sense, Paul knew that he would experience his own resurrection from the dead (Philippians 3:11; Ephesians 1:18-20).
- To share in Christ’s sufferings through self-denial (Mark 8:34), dying to the old self (Galatians 2:20) and suffering for the sake of Christ and His cause (Philippians 1:29; Acts 9:16; Romans 6:5-6; 1 Corinthians 15:31; 2 Corinthians 4:10; Galatians 2:20; Colossians 1:24; 1 Peter 4:13; Romans 8:17; 2 Corinthians 1:5; 4:8-18).
