WILL MEET ALL YOUR NEEDS / PHILIPPIANS 4:19

Paul emphasized the loving care of God the Father for His children. As you remain faithful to God and willing to share what he has given you to help meet others’ needs, God also will meet all your needs (Material, physical and spiritual) as you turn them over to Him. Notice that in this context it is the Philippians’ faithfulness to help others that brings God’s blessing into their own lives. The fact that God will meet our needs “in Christ Jesus” means that only as we remain united with Christ in close personal companionship can we experience God’s full provision. Among the many promises in God’s Word offering hope and encouragement to God’s people concerning His care and help are: Genesis 28:13-15; Genesis 50:20; Exodus 33:14; Deuteronomy 2:7; 32:7-14: 33:27; Joshua 1:9; 1 Samuel 7:12; 1 Kings 17:6, 16; 2 Chronicles 20:17; Psalms 18:35; 23; 121; Isaiah 25:4; 32:2 40:11; 41:10; 43:1-2; 46:3-4; Joel 2:21-27; Malachi 3:10; Matthew 6:25-34; 14:20; 23:37; Luke 6:38; 17:7; 22:35; John 10:27-28; 17:11; Romans 8:28, 31-39; 2 Timothy 1:12; 4:18; 1 Peter 5:7).

YOU SENT ME AID AGAIN AND AGAIN / PHILIPPIANS 4:16

The Philippian church was a missionary church that served and supported Paul’s needs during his travels (Philippians 4:15-17; 1:4-5). When we give to support faithful missionaries (those called and commissioned by Christ to take His message to people of other cultures, communities or lands), we are giving directly to God. He honors and accepts our gifts as “a fragrant offering, and acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God” (Philippians 4:18). Jesus says that what we do to help His people in need we are actually doing for the Lord Himself (Matthew 25:40).

We can endure and achieve all things Christ wants for us as we rely on His presence, power and purposes. The phrase “who gives me strength” is the Greek word endunamounti, literally “who empowers me.” Our ability to do what God desires and has in store for us comes not from our own ability, creativity or spirituality, but from His enabling power.

The key to contentment is realizing that God has given you in your present circumstances everything you need to endure, grow closer to Him and remain victorious in your relationship with Christ (1 Corinthians 15:57; 2 Corinthians 2:14; 1 John 5:4). The ability to live steadily and triumphantly above changing circumstances comes from Chrit’s power flowing in and through you (Philippians 4:13; 1 Timothy 6:8). This ability does not come naturally, however; it must be learned and developed through dependence on and obedience to Christ.

WHATEVER IS PURE / PHILIPPIANS 4:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Philippians 4:8

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

WHATEVER IS PURE / PHILIPPIANS 4:8

To experience God’s peace and freedom from anxiety, believers must fix their minds on those things that are true, noble, right, pure, etc. If you do these things, says Paul, “the God of peace will be with you” (Philippians 4:9). The result of allowing our minds to be occupied with the ungodly things of the world is that the joy, nearness and peace of God are lost and our hearts are no longer guarded. This verse also speaks of the influence of a person’s thoughts and attitudes on his or her life. Whatever occupies a person’s thinking will eventually work its way out in words or actions (Matthew 5:28; Matthew 15:19; Mark 7:21; Luke 6:45). Paul follows the challenge to “think about such things” by telling believers to “put into practice” (Philippians 4:9) these things. The qualities and character traits listed in this verse will lead to healthy thought patterns that will be shown in a life or moral purity and spiritual fitness.

PEACE OF GOD … WILL GUARD YOUR HEARTS / PHILIPPIANS 4:7

(KJV) Philippians 4:7

 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

PEACE OF GOD … WILL GUARD YOUR HEARTS / PHILIPPIANS 4:7

God’s peace is the opposite of human anxiety. It comes when we call on God from hearts that are fully devoted to Christ and His Word (John 15:7). By committing our cares to God, we can determine not to worry about them because they are His concern.

  1. This peace is an inner sense of calm and assurance delivered from Christ by the Holy Spirit within us (Romans 8:15-16). It is not based on emotions or circumstances, but on the solid foundation of our relationship with God. It involves a firm confidence that Jesus is near and that God’s love will be active in our lives for our good (Romans 8:28, 32; Isaiah 26:3). 
  2. When we commit our troubles and concerns to God in prayer, His peace will stand guard at the door of our hearts and minds, preventing the cares, worries and heartaches of life from troubling our lives and robbing us of our hope in Christ (Philippians 4:6; Isaiah 26:3-4, 12; 37:1-7; Romans 8:35-39; 1 Peter 5:7). 
  3. If fear and anxiety return, we can go to God in prayer with a thankful heart, and once again He will send His peace to guard our hearts. Under God’s “protective custody,” we will again feel safe and be able to rejoice in the Lord (Philippians 4:4).

(KJV) Philippians 4:6

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

DO NOT BE ANXIOUS ABOUT ANYTHING / PHILIPPIANS 4:6

The one sure cure for worry is prayer, for the following reasons:

  1. Godly prayer takes the focus off the difficulty of the situation and puts it on the power of God (Ephesians 3:20).
  2. Through prayer, we renew our trust in the Lord’s faithfulness by releasing to Him all our anxieties and problems, knowing that He will take them because He cares for us (Matthew 6:25-34; 1 Peter 5:7).
  3. When we release our problems and concerns to God, He will replace them with His peace. This supernatural peace will guard our minds and protect our hearts as a result of our communication and companionship with Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7; Isaiah 26:3; Colossians 3:15).
  4. Through prayer, God strengthens us to do all that He desires of us (Philippians 4:13; Philippians 3:20-21; Ephesians 3:16).
  5. Through prayer, we receive mercy, grace and help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16).
  6. As we spend time with God in prayer, He is working for our good (Philippians 4:11; Romans 8:28).

We must believe that Jesus may come at any time. The New Testament alerts us to the fact that Christ’s return is imminent – certain and soon (Luke 12:35-40). This hope and expectancy has always characterized New Testament Christians and churches. Christ wants it to be that way so that we are always ready, working and watching for His appearance (Matthew 24:36; Matthew 25:1-13; Romans 13:12-14).

In all circumstances, including suffering, God’s people must learn to rejoice and gain strength by recalling the Lord’s goodness, faithfulness, nearness and promises (Philippians 1:4; James 1:2; 1 Peter 4:13). Joy and gentleness in the middle of difficult times will definitely stand out and “be evident to all” because such an attitude is typically lacking in people who, without God, have no sure and steady means of coping with life’s stresses (Philippians 1:4).

(KJV) Philippians 3:20-21

Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

OUR CITIZENSHIP IS IN HEAVEN / PHILIPPIANS 3:20-21

Christians are no longer citizens of this world; by choosing to follow Jesus, they have become strangers and aliens on the earth (John 18:36; Romans 8:22-24; Galatians 4:26; Hebrews 11:13; 12:22-23; 13:14; 1 Peter 1:17; 2:11).

  1. Jesus said of His followers: “They are not of the world, even as I am not of it” (John 17:16). As Christians, we are pilgrims on a journey through the world; we are on our way to a new home. In relation to our life’s journey, its values and direction, heaven is our destination. It is the homeland for which we long. We have been born from above (John 3:3), our names are written in heaven’s directory (Philippians 4:3), our lives are guided by heavenly standards and our rights and inheritance are reserved in heaven.
  2. If we are faithful to God, our prayers reach heaven (2 Chronicles 6:21; 30:27) and our hope is directed there. Many of us have friends and family members who are already there, and we will be there soon. Jesus is there also, preparing a place for us, and He has promised to return and take us to heaven to be with Him (John 14:2-3; John 3:3; 14:1-4; Romans 8:17; Ephesians 2:6; Colossians 3:1-3; Hebrews 6:19-20; 12:22-24; 1 Peter 1:4-5; Revelation 7:9-17). For these reasons, all Christians long “for a better county – a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them” (Hebrews 11:16).
