(KJV) Matthew 19:9

And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

FOR MARITAL UNFAITHFULNESS / MATTHEW 19:9

God’s will for marriage is one mate (a man with a woman), one marriage for life (Matthew 19:5-6; Genesis 2:24; Song Of Solomon 2:7; 4:12; Malachi 2:14). Jesus does, however, make an exception: “marital unfaithfulness.” Marital unfaithfulness (Greek porneia) includes adultery (sexual relations with anyone other than one’s own spouse) or any kind of sexual immorality (Matthew 5:32). According to this verse, divorce is permitted only when sexual immorality is involved (1Corinthians 7:15 for another permissible reason for divorce – abandonment by the unbelieving spouse. Flagrant abuse could also be included in the definition of “marital unfaithfulness”). The following are important Biblical facts concerning divorce.

  1. When Jesus criticized divorce in Matthew 19:7-8, He is not criticizing a separation because of adultery. He is being critical of the kind of divorce permitted in the Old Testament in cases where a man’s wife “becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her” (Deuteronomy 24:1-4). This could have included finding out after the marriage had taken place about premarital sexual involvement. God’s desire in such cases was that the two remain together. However, He permitted divorce due to premarital impurity or other “indecent” causes because of the hardness of the people’s hearts (Matthew 19:7-8).
  2. In the case of immorality (sexual sin and unfaithfulness) after marriage, the Old Testament law prescribed the dissolving of the marriage and the execution (literally putting to death) of both offenders (Leviticus 20:10; Deuteronomy 22:22). This, of course, would leave the innocent person free to remarry (Romans 7:2; 1 Corinthians 7:39).
  3. Under the new covenant, based on Christ’s life and sacrifice for sins, divorce is still a tragedy. Yet marital unfaithfulness is such a cruel sin against one’s mate that Christ gives the innocent party the to end the marriage by a divorce. He or she is free to remarry another Christian (1 Corinthians 7:27-28).
  4. The apostle Paul (a pioneer missionary who started many New Testament churches and wrote many of the New Testament letters, or “books”) describes one more exception to the break-up of a marriage in 1 Corinthians 7:12-16. He indicates that if a Christian’s spouse is not a follower of Christ and decides to leave the marriage, the Christian who has been abandoned can remarry and it is not a sin. However, the Christian spouse is not to initiate the divorce if the non-Christian desires to stay married (1 Corinthians 7:15; 7:27-28).

Though God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16) because of the pain and destruction it brings on individuals and families, it is not an unforgivable sin. If Christians have experienced a divorce in their past for reasons not permissible by the standards of this passage, hope is not lost. If they have moved on and have truly experienced a change of heart, admitting and turning from any past sin, God will forgive them and work through their present circumstances (including a new marriage relationship). Of course, this only applies if those involved continue to follow God and submit to His purposes. This does not mean, however, that their lives will necessarily be free from the negative effects of previous divorce and family break-ups.
