(KJV) Zechariah 3:2
And the Lord said unto Satan, The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan; even the Lord that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?
REBUKE YOU SATAN! / ZECHARIAH 3:2
As Israel’s representative, Joshua in his own power could not resist Satan, for the high priest was dressed in filthy clothes (representing Israel’s sin).
- God Himself resisted Satan and discredited (proved to be wrong) his accusations. God had chosen Israel to carry out His purposes, and nothing could stop His plans.
- Israel was a “burning stick snatched from the fire.” The fire represents Israel’s judgment and suffering during the Babylonian exile (when the Babylonians conquered and destroyed Jerusalem over 70 years before and deported the people throughout the empire). God had brought Israel through these sufferings, not to destroy them, but to discipline them. Through all of the difficult and humiliating times, God was teaching His people to obey and depend on Him and preparing them for greater things.
