A MEASURING BASKET / ZECHARIAH 5:5-11

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zechariah 5:5-11

Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, Lift up now thine eyes, and see what is this that goeth forth. 6 And I said, What is it? And he said, This is an ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is their resemblance through all the earth. 7 And, behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah. 8 And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into the midst of the ephah; and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof. 9 Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven. 10 Then said I to the angel that talked with me, Whither do these bear the ephah? 11 And he said unto me, To build it an house in the land of Shinar: and it shall be established, and set there upon her own base.

A MEASURING BASKET / ZECHARIAH 5:5-11

The measuring basket represents the people’s immorality and offenses against God. 

  1. The woman represents all kinds of wickedness (Revelation 17:3-6, perhaps a female figure is used because the Hebrew word for “wickedness [Zechariah 5:8] is feminine in gender; wickedness is a general term referring to moral, religious and social evil). She was imprisoned in the basket by a heavy lead cover and then was taken to Babylonia, which represents the godless world system dominated by Satan (Revelation 17:1). This would be a suitable place to dispense of evil (it is where God had sent His people into captivity and exile as a punishment for centuries of rebellion). The wicked who remained among God’s people not only had to be punished but also removed from the land. Only then could it truly be the “holy land” (Zechariah 2:12).

Sin and wickedness must be removed from our churches and our individual lives, or God will remove His Spirit from us (Revelation 2-3). In the end times, God will remove sin from the whole earth, and Jesus Christ will forever reign in glory with His people (Revelation 19-22).

A FLYING SCROLL / ZECHARIAH 5:1-4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zechariah 5:1-4

Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll. 2 And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits. 3 Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it. 4 I will bring it forth, saith the Lord of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.

A FLYING SCROLL / ZECHARIAH 5:1-4

The fact that it was “flying” meant that it was unrolled and waving like a banner for all to see. It represented God’s curse, or judgment, against sinners – those who continued to rebel against God – in the land of Israel. Though God is merciful and patient (2 Peter 3:9), a time for judgment is coming that will consume the wicked. The time of grace (God’s undeserved favor, kindness, and mercy) someday will come to an end. His most severe acts of judgment will come during the great tribulation.

For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the Lord, which run to and fro through the whole earth.

Some thought that the work on the temple was not important. However, nothing that is done with God’s blessing and in the power of His Spirit is ever unimportant; instead, it has eternal value and meaning. We must never think that our lack of ability or resources will cause God’s purposes to fail. From the time of creation and throughout history, God has always done great things by starting with very little.

Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.

Difficulties and obstacles that seem as large as a mountain can be overcome by the power of God’s Spirit working through us. Then again, when the power of the Spirit is not present and active among us, opposition to God’s work and spiritual problems will more likely overwhelm us.

NOT BY MIGHT NOR BY POWER BUT BY MY SPIRIT / ZECHARIAH 4:6

(KJV) Zechariah 4:6

Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.

NOT BY MIGHT NOR BY POWER BUT BY MY SPIRIT / ZECHARIAH 4:6

Though this message was spoken to Zerubbabel, it applies to all God’s people (2 Timothy 3:16). Military might, political power or human strength cannot accomplish God’s work; we can only accomplish His purposes if we are enabled by the Holy Spirit (Judges 6:34; Isaiah 31:3). Jesus started His earthly ministry in the power of the Spirit (Luke 4:1, 18), and the church was empowered to begin its mission when Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to fill His followers at Pentecost (Acts 1:8; 2:4). Only as the Spirit continues to guide and empower our lives will we accomplish God’s plans for us. This is why Jesus continues to baptize His followers in the Holy Spirit (Luke 3:16).

TWO OLIVE TREES / ZECHARIAH 4:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zechariah 4:3

And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof.

TWO OLIVE TREES / ZECHARIAH 4:3

The two olive trees represent the royal and priestly ministries of Zerubbabel, the governor, and Joshua, the high priest (Haggai 1:1), who were “anointed to serve the Lord of all the earth” (Zechariah 4:14; to be anointed meant commissioned and empowered to serve, and it often was done in a ceremony involving the symbolic pouring of oil over the individual). Both Zerubbabel and Joshua were descendants of King David, just as Jesus Christ (the final and complete Priest and King) would be. 

  1. The trees symbolize a continual source of oil -representing the Spirit’s power – available to God’s people. The two leaders were to guide the people into a life characterized by the power of the Spirit (Zechariah 4:12).
  2. In their fullest meaning, the trees represent the kingly and priestly ministries of Jesus Christ Himself. He serves in the role of both supreme Ruler and Mediator between God and people. He is also the One who baptizes His followers in the Holy Spirit and keeps them full of His power.

SOLID GOLD LAMPSTAND / ZECHARIAH 4:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zechariah 4:1-2

And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep. 2 And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof:

SOLID GOLD LAMPSTAND / ZECHARIAH 4:2

This is an olive oil lampstand. It had seven lights, all on the same level, arranged around or set under a bowl containing the oil. Oil flowed from the bowl through “the seven channels to the lights” to keep the lamps full and burning. The text also could be interpreted that each of the seven lights had seen channels or lips with a wick (giving a total of forty nine lights in all). Either way, the bowl of oil symbolized God’s endless and unlimited power through the Holy Spirit (the use of the number “seven” represents fullness or completeness). SEVEN EYES ON THAT ONE STONE / ZECHARIAH 3:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zachariah 3:9

For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.

SEVEN EYES ON THAT ONE STONE / ZECHARIAH 3:9

The stone is another symbol of the Messiah, or Christ (Isaiah 28:16; 1 Peter 2:6). The seven eyes represent complete insight, omniscience (the characteristic of being “all-knowing”) and divine intelligence (Revelation 5:6). Christ would remove sin in a single day, referring to the day He died on the cross to pay the full penalty for our sins.

MY SERVANT THE BRANCH / ZECHARIAH 3:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zechariah 3:8

Thus saith the Lord of hosts; If thou wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.

MY SERVANT THE BRANCH / ZECHARIAH 3:8

Joshua and the other priests were prophetic “types” (people who served as symbols of other things or persons), pointing to the work of God’s servant, the Branch (Isaiah 4:2, 11:1; Jeremiah 23:5). The angel of the Lord (Christ, Zechariah 1:12), who had stood by and supervised Joshua’s cleansing and restoration (Zechariah 3:5), is now identified as the Branch. This name typically referred to the fact that Christ came from the “root” or family tree of King David, the line through which God promised to preserve Israel and eventually send the Messiah – the ultimate King of Israel. The Branch would carry our sins and restore our relationship with God (Isaiah 53:1-6).  He would defeat the power of Satan by taking the filthy clothes of the world’s sins on Himself, dying in our place and paying the ultimate penalty for humanity’s offenses against God.

IF YOU WILL WALK IN MY WAYS / Zechariah 3:7

IF YOU WILL WALK IN MY WAYS / Zechariah 3:7

God’s personal message to Joshua strongly encouraged him to follow the Lord and obey His requirements. If Joshua did so, he would serve in a position of authority in the temple and have open access to God’s throne room in heaven, where the angels serve. We too can have open access to heaven’s court through prayer if we humbly obey God and serve His purposes.
