MORE CORRUPT THAN THOSE OF THEIR FATHERS / JUDGES 2:19

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Judges 2:19

And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.

The Danger of Drift: Are We More Faithful or More Corrupt Than the Generation Before?

It is one of the most tragic patterns in human history: the slow, generational slide away from God. We see it in our communities, we see it in our churches, and if we are not careful, we see it in our own families.

The Book of Judges captures this devastating spiritual decline in a single, sobering verse:

“But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt than those of their fathers, following other gods and serving and worshiping them. They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways.”Judges 2:19

Judges 2:19 reveals that spiritual decline rarely happens overnight. It is a slow path of moral and spiritual deterioration. In Israel’s case, each successive generation became more rebellious and spiritually ungodly than the one before it.

Today, the children, grandchildren, and spiritual descendants of believers must face a hard question: Are we as committed to God as the generations that came before us? Or are we conforming more and more to the ways of our society, quietly rejecting our spiritual heritage?

The Pattern of Unfaithfulness

The failure of God’s people to remain faithful to Him and His Word is a recurring heartbreak throughout Biblical history. The Old Testament reveals a continuous cycle of people rejecting God’s love, His standards, His forgiveness, and His revelation.

We see this tragic pattern of unfaithfulness from the very beginning:

  • Adam and Eve choosing their own wisdom over God’s command (Genesis 3:1-7)
  • Adam’s descendants corrupting the earth until God grieved that He had made man (Genesis 6:1-7)
  • Noah’s descendants building the Tower of Babel in open defiance of God (Genesis 11:1-9)
  • The children of Israel falling into idolatry at the golden calf, throughout the era of the Judges, and during the reigns of the kings (Exodus 32; Judges 1-21; 1 & 2 Kings; Acts 7:34-53)

This is not just an Old Testament problem. The New Testament warns us that in the end times, many within the church will turn away from true faith in Christ and His revelation in the Bible. Instead of standing firm, they will follow popular culture, secular philosophies, and lifestyles that directly contradict God’s Word (Matthew 24:10-12, 24; 2 Timothy 1:15; 4:1-4; Revelation 2-3).

When a culture drifts, the pressure to compromise becomes immense. If we are not actively swimming against the current, we are drifting with it.

The Remnant of the Faithful

Yet, amid the dark landscape of spiritual decline, the Bible offers a massive beacon of hope: God always has a remnant.

There have always been, and will always be, those who refuse to give up their faith during times of widespread compromise. Scriptural history is rich with examples of faithful servants who stood alone against the tide:

  • Enoch and Noah, who walked with God when the world was filled with wickedness (Genesis 5:21-24; 6:9-12)
  • Abraham, who obeyed God’s call to leave everything behind (Genesis 12-24)
  • Joseph and Moses, who chose loyalty to God over the passing pleasures and riches of Egypt (Genesis 37-50; Exodus 33:11-14)
  • Joshua and Caleb, who trusted God’s promises when the rest of the nation trembled in fear (Numbers 14:1-10)
  • Ruth, who clung to the God of Israel, and Samuel, who listened to God’s voice when the priesthood was corrupt (Ruth 2:12; 1 Samuel 3:19)
  • Elijah, who stood against hundreds of false prophets, reminding us that God always reserves a faithful few (1 Kings 18:20-22; Romans 11:2-5)
  • John the Baptist, Simeon, and Anna, who remained devoted in prayer and preparation for the Messiah (Luke 1:15-17; 2:25-38)
  • The Disciples and the Apostle Paul, who faced persecution, prison, and death, yet finished their race with joy (Acts 5:27-42; 2 Timothy 4:6-8)

Ultimately, the Book of Revelation points to the overcomers—those considered blameless because they refused to compromise with the world (Revelation 14:1-5). They form a great multitude from every nation, tribe, and tongue who “have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb” (Revelation 7:9-17).

Choosing Our Path

The generation before us fought battles to hand down the truth of the Gospel. The question is no longer what they did, but what we will do. Will we be like the Israelites in Judges, refusing to give up our stubborn, compromising ways? Or will we join the ranks of the overcomers?

Spiritual drift happens naturally; faithfulness requires intentionality. Let us resolve today to anchor ourselves to God’s Word, rejecting the corrupting influences of our age, and passing down a legacy of unbroken devotion to the next generation.

A Closing Prayer for Faithfulness

Heavenly Father,

We come before You recognizing the easy temptation to drift. Lord, look at our hearts today. Forgive us for the ways we have quietly conformed to the culture around us instead of transforming our minds through Your Word. Forgive us where we have taken our spiritual heritage for granted or allowed our devotion to grow lukewarm.

We do not want to be a generation that is more corrupt than the one before us. We ask for the courage, grace, and strength to be overcomers. Give us the bold faith of Noah, the obedience of Abraham, the purity of Joseph, and the endurance of Paul. Protect our families, our children, and our grandchildren from the subtle erosion of faith.

Keep us anchored safely in Your truth. May our robes be washed white in the blood of the Lamb, and may we stand blameless before You, fiercely committed to Your name until the very end.

In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.
