But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

They Believed: The Power of the Name of Jesus Christ

In Acts 8:12, we witness a profound spiritual turning point in Samaria. The scripture tells us that when the Samaritans believed Philip’s preaching concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.

This moment carries immense theological weight. The Samaritans fully met the conditions for receiving spiritual salvation, positioning them firmly as Christians even before the later, visible arrival of the Holy Spirit.

The Evidence of Genuine Saving Faith

Two unmistakable facts make it clear that the faith of the Samaritans was a genuine, saving faith—one that brought them into a legitimate, personal relationship with God.

  • Apostolic Validation: Both Philip, a deacon full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, and the apostles in Jerusalem considered the Samaritans’ faith to be entirely valid. It is unreasonable to think Philip would baptize and minister to people whose faith he suspected was insincere.
  • Public Identification: The Samaritans publicly acknowledged their commitment to Christ through water baptism. Scripture affirms that whoever believes and is baptized will be saved. While water baptism itself did not save them, it served as a vital means of identifying with Jesus’ death and resurrection, publicly testifying to their inner transformation.

Through this genuine faith, the Samaritans were spiritually born again, possessing the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit from the moment they believed.

Salvation vs. Empowerment

A common point of confusion arises because the Samaritans received the Holy Spirit several days later through the laying on of hands by Peter and John. However, this second event was not for their salvation.

Instead, it was an empowering reception of the Spirit, identical to what the disciples experienced at Pentecost. This was given to equip them with supernatural power to serve Christ and boldly spread His message. Throughout the Book of Acts, the term “receive the Spirit” is frequently used in this empowering sense, distinct from the initial moment of spiritual rebirth.

True faith in the name of Jesus Christ brings immediate citizenship into the kingdom of God. Like the Samaritans, our belief anchors us in salvation, while the continuous filling of the Holy Spirit empowers us to live out our divine calling.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the unchanging power of the gospel and the authority found in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. We thank You that through simple, genuine faith in Him, we are completely saved, redeemed, and welcomed into Your eternal kingdom.

Lord, help us to stand firm in the assurance of our salvation, just as the Samaritans did. We ask that You continually fill us with the power of Your Holy Spirit. Equip us with the wisdom, boldness, and strength needed to serve You and share Your truth with the world around us. May our lives be a public, powerful testimony to Your grace.

In the mighty and matchless name of Jesus Christ, we pray, Amen.
