The Heart of Generosity: What God Says About the Poor
In Deuteronomy 15:7-11, God gives His people a clear, uncompromising command: when you see someone in need, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted. Instead, you are to freely open your hand and provide for what they lack. God is not just looking at the action of giving; He is deeply concerned with the attitude behind it. Giving generously without a grudging heart unlocks God’s blessing, while selfishness and greed separate us from His favor.
The Danger of the “Grudging Heart”
It is easy to let practical concerns morph into rationalized stinginess. In ancient Israel, the law required that all debts be canceled every seventh year. God warned the people not to let an evil, wicked thought enter their minds: refusing to lend or give to the poor just because the year of debt cancellation was approaching.
When we hold back our material possessions out of a spirit of selfishness, we fail to show empathy for those suffering from unfortunate circumstances. If we ignore those in real need, the poor may cry out to the Lord, and we will be found guilty of sin. True obedience to God’s law isn’t just about following rules; it grows out of a sincere, heartfelt desire to love our neighbor.
A Perpetual Call to Action
Moses realistically acknowledged that “the poor will never cease to be in the land”. This isn’t an excuse to ignore poverty, but rather a perpetual call to action. Because there will always be those facing hardship, we must always maintain an open-handed approach to our resources.
This expectation echoes throughout the Old and New Testaments alike.
- The Old Testament Connection: Obedience to God’s law was always expected to manifest in helping those less fortunate Deuteronomy 24:14-15; Proverbs 14:21, 31. The way we use our blessings to help others directly impacts God’s blessing over our own work Deuteronomy 15:9-10.
- The New Testament Fulfillment: The New Testament places a heavy emphasis on compassion, empathy, and kindness, especially toward those who have suffered unexpected or unfortunate circumstances Matthew 25:31-36; Galatians 6:2; Galatians 6:6-10. We are called to bear one another’s burdens and do good to all people, especially the household of faith.
Let us evaluate the condition of our hearts. May our hands be open, our hearts be willing, and our actions reflect the boundless generosity of our Creator.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the abundant blessings and resources You have entrusted to me. I confess that sometimes my heart grows hesitant, and I worry more about my own security than the needs of those around me. Forgive me for the times I have closed my hands to the less fortunate. I pray that You would soften my heart and give me Your eyes to see the hurting and the vulnerable. Open my hands wide so that I may share freely and cheerfully with those who are experiencing unexpected hardships. Use me as an instrument of Your compassion, empathy, and kindness today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
