ALL MAY GO WELL / 3 JOHN 1:1-2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 3 John 1:1-2

The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth. Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

ALL MAY GO WELL / 3 JOHN 1:1-2

It is God’s provision and plan that His people be healthy and that their lives reflect His care and goodness and be accompanied by His blessings. God wants all to go well with us, meaning that He desires for our lives, families, work, plans and service for Him to go according to His purposes and direction. For this reason, God’s blessings and provisions – made available through the life and personal sacrifice of His Son, Jesus – are provided to meet both physical and spiritual needs.

Concerning God’s plans to bless and prosper us both physically and spiritually, Scripture teaches the following:

  1. The word here translated “all may go well” (Greek euodoo) literally means “to have a good journey, to be led along a good road.” According to that meaning, John’s prayer was that as we walk the road of relationship with Christ (1 John 1:7; 1 John 2:6; 2 John 1:6), we may continue to follow His truth (3 John 1:3-4) and to experience the “full life” (John 10:10) – the overall purpose, blessing and fulfillment – that He desires for us.
  2. God desires that we earn enough to provide the necessities of shelter, food and clothing for ourselves and our families and that we have enough to help others as needed and to contribute to Christ’s cause (Philippians 4:15-19). According to His purposes, God will provide the means for us to do so. But whatever our means or circumstances, God is able to give us enough for our needs (2 Corinthians 9:8-12), and He promises to supply our needs ‘according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).
  3. Although we should trust God to supply all of our material needs, we must recognize the Bible’s teaching that He may allow us to experience times of need. (a) We may sometimes experience need with the purpose of challenging and encouraging us to trust God more. Such times can build, develop and strengthen our faith and spiritual endurance. They also help us to effectively relate and minister to others who are in need, particularly those with whom we have shared common experiences (Romans 8:35-39; 2 Corinthians 4:7-12; 6:4-10; 12:7-10; 1 Peter 1:6-7). (b) We may, at times, endure difficulty and distress when our faith and service to Christ bring opposition and persecution from the world (Luke 6:20-23; Hebrews 10:32-34; 1 Peter 2:19-21; Revelation 2:9; Revelation 2:10). (c)We may experience lack or even poverty due to national disasters or natural circumstances, such as war, famine, drought or poor economic or social conditions (Acts 11:28-30; 2 Corinthians 8:2, 12-14).
  4. God’s presence, help and blessing in our physical lives are related to the health and prosperity of our spiritual lives. This does not mean that everyone who experiences exceptional health is spiritually healthy or that those who experience ill health are necessarily lacking spiritually. It simply means that as we are faithful to Christ, He will bless us in all ways and provide everything He desires for us so that our lives honor Him and fulfill His purposes. For this reason, we must seek God’s desires (Psalms 37:4), pursue His plans and purposes (Matthew 6:10; Matthew 26:39; Hebrews 10:7-9) and obey the Holy spirit (Romans 8:14). We must also remain separated from the corruption of the world (Romans 12:1-2; 2 Corinthians 6:16-18, love God’s Word (James 1:21; 1 Peter 2:2), ask for His help in prayer (Matthew 6:9-13; Hebrews 4:16), work hard (2 Thessalonians 3:6-12), trust Him to supply our needs (Matthew 6:25-34; 1 Peter 5:7) and give priority to His kingdom and standards above all else (Matthew 6:33; Matthew 6:11; Luke 11:3; Colossians 4:12).
  5. Although our souls may be getting along well in a spiritual sense, this does not remove all difficulties from other areas of our lives. When adversity, troubles and needs come our way, we must rely on God and commit our needs and situations to Him in prayer.

SIGNS / JOHN 2:11

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 2:11

This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

SIGNS / JOHN 2:11

The term in Greek is semeion. Some scholars refer to John 1 – 12 as the “Book of Signs.” John highlights seven main signs (John 2:1-11; 4:46-54; 5:2-18; 6:1-15; 6:16-21; 9:1-41; 11:1-46), which point to Jesus as the Son of God (John 1:18) or “the Christ, the Son of God” (John 20:30-31). They confirm His activity as the works of God and are proof of His divine (God) nature and authority. They challenge us to put our faith in Him – not the signs themselves. The New Testament also warns about counterfeit (false, fake) signs that the end-time antichrist will use to deceive many (Matthew 24:24; Mark 13:22; 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10; Revelation 13:14).

CHOICE WINE – HAD TOO MUCH TO DRINK / JOHN 2:10

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 2:10

And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

CHOICE WINE – HAD TOO MUCH TO DRINK / JOHN 2:10

CHOICE WINE

It is significant that the Greek adjective translated “choice” and “best” (John 2:10) is not agathos, meaning “good,” but kalos, meaning “morally excellent and benefiting.” Even secular writers of the time confirm the notion that the best “wines” were sweet and unfermented. The Roman writer, Pliny, stated that “good wine,” called sapa, was not fermented (was not alcoholic). Sapa was grape juice boiled down to one-third of its original volume to increase its sweet flavor. He also wrote that “witness are most beneficial when all their potency has been removed by the strainer” (Pliny, Natural History, XIV.23-24). Pliny, Plutarch and Horace all suggest that the best wine was the type that was “harmless and innocent.”

HAD TOO MUCH TO DRINK

The phrase “had too much to drink” is from the Greek world methusko, a word that has two meanings:

  1. To be or become drunk.
  2. To be filled or satisfied (without reference to intoxication). Methusko may be understood here as the second meaning. However this text is translated, the banquet master is making a general observation that would have applied to any wedding celebration, no matter the type of drink served. He simply was acknowledging that hosts want to keep their guests happy and that satisfied guests do not suddenly raise their expectations. This remark does not assume that guests are drunk and for this reason lack the ability to discern the quality of wine. The context of this passage in no way suggests that Jesus participated in and contributed to a drunken party (John 2:3).

WINE – THEY HAVE NOT MORE WINE / JOHN 2:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 2:3

And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

WINE – THEY HAVE NOT MORE WINE / JOHN 2:3

WINE

The word “wine” (Greek onions) in the New Testament is a generic term and can refer to many types of grape beverage, either fermented (alcoholic and potentially intoxicating) or unfermented wine. The type of wine must be determined by the context.

THEY HAVE NO MORE WINE

Some believe that both the wine provided at the beginning of the wedding and the wine Jesus made were fermented (alcoholic) and consumed in large quantities. Yet, those who accept this view would then have to recognize and explain the following probabilities:

  1. A number of guests at the wedding would likely be drunk or nearly drunk by the time Jesus is asked to provide more wine, since the guests had already drunk so freely that the host had run out of wine.
  2. Mary, the mother of Jesus, would be showing regret that the intoxicating drink had run out and would ask Jesus to supply people who may have already had too much to drink with even more alcoholic wine.
  3. In order to respond to His mother’s wishes, Jesus would be making 120-180 gallons of intoxicating wine (John 2:6-9), more than enough to cause extreme drunkenness.
  4. Jesus would be making this intoxicating beverage as the very first of His “miraculous signs” by which He “revealed His glory” (John 2:11) and showed that He is the Son of God and spiritual Savior of humankind.

To propose that Jesus made alcoholic wine would certainly seem to contradict the moral principles stated in other parts of God’s Word. In light of God’s holy nature (the fact that He is completely pure, perfect, complete and separated from evil), Christ’s loving concern for humanity and Mary’s good character, it is reasonable to conclude that the choice of new wine Jesus created was pure, sweet and unfermented. These were characteristics associated with “new wine” at the time (as opposed to aged and fermented wine). In addition, the wine Jesus made was described as even better than usual. Considering the quantities and the occasion, it is likely that the original, inferior wine furnished by the head of the banquet was not fermented or at least was greatly diluted (as were many forms of wine in those days).

WASH HIS CLOTHES AND BATHE / LEVITICUS 15:5

(KJV) Leviticus 15:5

And whosoever toucheth his bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

WASH HIS CLOTHES AND BATHE / LEVITICUS 15:5

Leviticus 10 – 15 show God’s concern for His people’s physical health and well-being. The ancient people around them knew little or nothing about hygiene, sanitation, the importance of washing or the prevention of infectious diseases. They did not provide adequate care for the poor or the sick either. God’s laws ensured that His people gave proper attention to these things and encouraged them to demonstrate His purity and perfection in every aspect of their lives.

PRONOUNCE HIM CEREMONIALLY UNCLEAN / LEVITICUS 13:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Leviticus 13:3

And the priest shall look on the plague in the skin of the flesh: and when the hair in the plague is turned white, and the plague in sight be deeper than the skin of his flesh, it is a plague of leprosy: and the priest shall look on him, and pronounce him unclean.

PRONOUNCE HIM CEREMONIALLY UNCLEAN / LEVITICUS 13:3

All the things described as “unclean” in Leviticus had to do with reflecting God’s purity and purposes. Most related to physical or environmental issues such as injury, disease (Leviticus 13-14; Numbers 5:2; 12:10-14), death (Numbers 5:2; 31:19; 35:33) and contamination (Leviticus 14:33-57). These laws reflected God’s character and His concern for His people.

  1. All of these things that were described as “unclean” reflected how creation had strayed from the perfection God originally intended. The laws of uncleanness constantly reminded the people of the devastating results of their sin.
  2. But these laws also showed God’s care for the people. For example, because the Israelites lives so closely with one another and wandered from place to place, infectious (contagious) skin diseases or environmental hazards could cause widespread death and destruction to many other groups of people. That is why these “unclean” things had to be contained and controlled. God’s laws about cleanliness in body and home were safety measures that show His care and compassion for humankind.

GIVES BIRTH TO A SON / LEVITICUS 12:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Leviticus 12:1-2

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean.

GIVES BIRTH TO A SON / LEVITICUS 12:2

Parenthood is a blessing from God and can be one of life’s greatest joys (Genesis 1:28; Genesis 9:1; Psalms 127:3; 128:3). The physical waste that was part of childbirth, however, had to be treated as unclean (Leviticus 15:16-19; 13:3; Exodus 19:15). The physical distress and pain of childbirth were a direct result of humankind’s original rebellion against God and “fall” into sin (Genesis 3:15).

  1. Children are now born with a sinful nature; that is, they are born with a natural focus on selfish desires and the tendency to rebel against God (1 John 1:8). The psalmist wrote: “Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me” (Psalms 51:5).
  2. Everyone born into the world also faces the reality of physical death (Genesis 2:16-17; 5:3) and the possibility of eternal death. The only way to escape eternal death is to accept the forgiveness and new life Christ provided by dying for our sins. Death was never God’s intention or part of His perfect plan for humans. The uncleanness associated with childbirth reveals the truth that the newborn child needs a Savior.
  3. Christian parents, knowing the sinful natures their children are born with, should sincerely and persistently pray that their children will accept Christ as Lord (the Leader and authority in their lives), be “born again” (not in the physical sense, but in the spiritual sense) (John 3:3-8) and receive new life by God’s Holy Spirit.

BE HOLY / LEVITICUS 11:44

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Leviticus 11:44

For I am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

BE HOLY / LEVITICUS 11:44

The instructions concerning clean and unclean (proper in improper) food (Leviticus 11) were given for health reasons, as well as standards to help Israel avoid the ungodly lifestyles of other societies (Deuteronomy 14:1-2). These dietary instructions are no longer binding on New Testament believers because Christ fulfilled the purposes behind these laws (Matthew 5:17; Matthew 15:1-20; Acts 10:15-15; Colossians 2:16, 1 Timothy 4:3). However, the spiritual principles represented in those instructions still apply today.

  1. Christians today must distinguish themselves from their surrounding society by eating, drinking and dressing in ways that honor God with their bodies (1 Corinthians 6:20; 10:31). At the same time, they must avoid social customs and behaviors that do not reflect godly character and moral purity. They must be “holy in all [they] do” (1 Peter 1:15).
  2. The detailed emphasis on cleanliness points out the principle that God’s people must be morally different from those who do not follow God or honor Him in the way they think, speak and act (Exodus 19:6; 2 Corinthians 7:1). Christians must honor God in every area of life (1 Corinthians 10:31).

HE … BLESSED THEM / LUKE 24:50

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 24:50

And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.

HE … BLESSED THEM / LUKE 24:50

God’s blessing on the lives of His followers is necessary. God’s Word teaches several things about His blessings:

  1. The word “blessing” (Greek eulogia) has the meaning of: (a) a God-given gift causing our work to succeed (Deuteronomy 28:12); (b) God’s presence with us (Genesis 26:3). (c)God gives us strength, power and help (Ephesians 3:16-19; Colossians 1:11-12). God working in and through us to do good (Philippians 2:13).
  2. In the Old Testament, words related to “blessing” occur more than 400 times. The first thing God did in relation to humanity was to bless His creation (Genesis 1:28). God also sustains His work by blessing (Ezekiel 34:26). The life and history of God’s people are affected by blessings and curses, depending on the choices they make to obey or disobey God (Deuteronomy 11:26).
  3. In the New Testament the whole work of Christ can be summed up by the statement that God has “sent Him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways” (Acts 3:26). We see Jesus blessing little children (Mark 10:13-16) and His followers as He Departs from earth (Luke 24:50-51). Blessing also plays a key part in the ministry of the apostles (His “sent ones,” the pioneer leaders in the early New Testament church, Romans 15:29).
  4. God’s blessing is conditional. God’s people must make a choice: they will either be blessed through obedience or cursed through disobedience (Deuteronomy 30:15-18; Jeremiah 17:5, 7).
  5. How do we receive the Lord’s blessing? Three things are required: (a) We must always focus and depend on Jesus for His blessing on our ministry, work and family (Hebrews 12:2). (b) We must actively love, trust and obey Him (Matthew 5:3-11; 24:45-46; Revelation 1:3; Revelation 16:15; 22:7). (c)We must remove everything from our lives that would prevent or get in the way of His blessing (anything that defies His standards, contradicts His purposes or displeases Him, Romans 13:12; Ephesians 4:22; Hebrews 12:1).
  6. God’s “blessing” is not the same as earthly “success,” personal material gain or the absence of suffering in our lives (Hebrews 11:37-39; Revelation 2:8-10). The Bible makes this fact clear: Because a person appears successful and everything is going well does not necessarily mean that he or she has God’s approval. God’s standards of wealth, success and service are usually the complete opposite of human standards (1 Samuel 16:7; Matthew 10:39; Matthew 20:26; Luke 12:21; 13:30; Galatians 2:6).
