MICHAEL … DISPUTING WITH THE DEVIL /JUDE 1:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILYDEVOTION

(KJV) Jude 1:9

Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

The Weapon of Humility: What the Archangel Michael Teaches Us About Spiritual Warfare

We live in a culture that loves a good fight. Whether it is an argument on social media, a political debate, or a personal grievance, our natural instinct is often to fire back with sharp words, insults, or slander. We like to assert our own authority and put our opponents in their place.

But when it comes to the spiritual realm, God’s Word calls us to a completely different standard.

In the small but powerful book of Jude, we find a fascinating glimpse into an intense cosmic battle:

“But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, ‘The Lord rebuke you!'”Jude 1:9

The Clash of Cosmic Titans

Michael is arguably the highest-ranked angel mentioned in Scripture—a mighty warrior prince of heaven. Yet, when he found himself in a fierce dispute with Satan himself over the body of Moses, Michael didn’t rely on his own strength, rank, or clever insults. He didn’t launch into a tirade of slanderous accusations against the enemy.

If anyone had the “right” to lecture the devil, it was Michael. Instead, he chose a path of profound restraint and holy humility. He simply deferred the judgment to the ultimate authority, declaring: “The Lord rebuke you!”

The Danger of Spiritual Arrogance

Jude includes this historical account to serve as a serious warning for us. If a magnificent archangel refused to speak presumptuously or rely on his own power against evil spirits, how much more should we as human beings refrain from arrogance in our spiritual battles?

The Apostle Peter echoes this exact warning in 2 Peter 2:11, noting that even angels, who are much stronger and more powerful than humans, do not bring slanderous accusations against evil authorities before the Lord.

Spiritual warfare is real, but our victory does not come from our own bravado, loud declarations, or self-asserted power. When we try to fight the enemy using our own strength or intellectual pride, we walk onto a dangerous battlefield completely unprotected.

Relying on the Only Power That Saves

Michael’s response gives us a perfect blueprint for handling spiritual opposition and conflict. He relied entirely on three things:

  1. God’s Power: Recognizing that true victory belongs to the Lord alone.
  2. God’s Authority: Operating under the divine chain of command rather than taking matters into his own hands.
  3. God’s Word: Standing firmly on the truth of God’s sovereignty.

When you face spiritual attacks, temptation, or overwhelming conflict, you don’t need to scream at the darkness or rely on your own limited strength. You simply need to stand behind the shield of the Almighty. Our role is not to defeat the enemy in our own name, but to invoke the name of the One who has already won the war.

Let us lay down our pride, step back from arrogant arguments, and allow the Lord to fight our battles.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We come before You today humbled by the magnitude of Your power and authority. Lord, forgive us for the times we have been arrogant, presumptuous, or reliant on our own strength in the face of spiritual battles. Help us to guard our tongues against slander and pride.

Teach us to follow the example of the archangel Michael by operating in holy restraint and absolute dependence on You. When the enemy attacks or temptation rises, remind us to step back and declare, “The Lord rebuke you!” Thank You that the ultimate victory belongs to You, and that we can rest securely under Your divine protection. Increase our faith, deepen our humility, and guide our steps today.

In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.

THESE DREAMERS / JUDE 1:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jude 1:8

Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities.

Losing Touch with Reality: The Danger of “The Dreamers” in Jude 1:8

We live in a culture that loves the phrase “follow your heart.” It sounds poetic, liberating, and harmless. But what happens when our internal desires, passions, and self-made truths completely detach us from actual reality?

In his short but fiery New Testament letter, Jude gives a sobering warning about people who did exactly that.

“In the very same way, these dreamers pollute their own bodies, reject authority and slander celestial beings.”Jude 1:8

Jude pulls no punches when describing the deceptive teachers who had quietly slipped into the early church. He explicitly brands them as “dreamers.”

Understanding why Jude chooses this specific label exposes the subtle ways deception can creep into our own modern lives, and reveals three distinct warning signs of spiritual erosion.

What Does It Mean to Be a “Dreamer”?

When we use the word “dreamer” today, we usually mean someone with big goals or a creative imagination. Jude, however, uses the term with a sharp, dual meaning:

  • False Revelations: These teachers claimed to have special, vivid dreams or private revelations directly from God. They used these subjective spiritual experiences to bypass the established teachings of the Apostles.
  • Moral Delusion: More likely, their uncontrolled fleshly passions had caused them to fall into a spiritual sleep. They were living in a fantasy world of their own making—completely detached from the absolute truth of God’s Word and reality.

Right belief always dictates right behavior. When people reject objective truth to follow their own internal desires, their lives quickly begin to fracture in three predictable ways:

1. They Pollute Their Own Bodies

The dreamers used “grace” as a permission slip to indulge in physical immortality. By isolating their spiritual claims from physical accountability, they defiled their flesh. They forgot that our bodies are intended to be holy temples of the Holy Spirit.

2. They Reject Authority

To live exactly how they wanted, these deceptive teachers had to dismiss any authority that told them “no.” They rejected apostolic leadership, the local church shepherds, and ultimately, the lordship of Jesus Christ. They became their own highest authority.

3. They Slander Celestial Beings

In their arrogant delusion, these individuals spoke arrogantly and abusively about spiritual realities they could not comprehend. They mocked the supernatural realm and divine judgment with staggering, casual disrespect.

Anchoring Ourselves to Reality

The tragic irony of the “dreamers” is that they thought they were enlightened, liberated, and deeply spiritual. In truth, they were sleepwalking straight toward destruction.

We face the exact same danger today whenever we prioritize our feelings, personal preferences, or modern cultural trends above the unchanging Word of God. If our spirituality is anchored only in our own shifting internal desires, we are merely dreaming.

To stay awake and firmly rooted in reality, we must rely entirely on the Holy Spirit and actively submit our thoughts, bodies, and lifestyles to the objective authority of Scripture.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, Almighty God, protect us from the subtle deceptions of our own hearts and the false narratives of the world around us. Forgive us for the moments we have tried to reshape Your truth to accommodate our own personal passions, comfort, or pride.

We pray that You would keep us spiritually awake, sober, and alert. Guard our minds against the delusions of self-made spiritualities that reject Your divine order. Give us a profound reverence for Your holy authority, a deep respect for the spiritual boundaries You have established, and a passionate desire to honor You with our physical bodies.

Anchor our souls firmly to the absolute truth of Your Word. Let Your Holy Spirit lead us daily so that our faith is never built on the shifting sands of human imagination, but on the solid, unchanging foundation of Jesus Christ our Lord.

In His holy and powerful name we pray, Amen.

SODOM AND GOMORRAH / JUDE 1:7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jude 1:7

Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

Understanding the Warnings of Jude: A Call to Holiness

The small but potent Book of Jude serves as a serious reminder for the Christian church to contend earnestly for the faith. In Jude 1:7, the text references the historical destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah as a permanent example of holy judgment against systemic ungodliness and immorality.

"In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire." - Jude 1:7

The Context of Jude’s Warning

Jude wrote this epistle to warn the early church about false teachers who had slipped in unnoticed. These individuals were distorting the grace of God into a license for immorality and denying Jesus Christ. To illustrate the certainty of divine justice, Jude points back to three historical examples:

  • The rebellious Israelites in the wilderness.
  • The angels who abandoned their proper dwelling.
  • The ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.

The Example of Sodom and Gomorrah

The account in Genesis 19 details the moral collapse of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jude highlights that their judgment was not arbitrary but came after the population collectively gave themselves over to intense immorality and went after “strange flesh.”

Throughout biblical history, this event is consistently used as a baseline standard for severe judgment and absolute destruction. The primary lessons for modern believers from this passage include:

  • God’s Holiness is Absolute: God is patient, but His holiness requires that sin eventually faces justice.
  • The Reality of Consequences: The text presents the historical physical destruction of the cities as an earthly shadow of eternal consequences.
  • A Call to Distinction: Believers are urged to live lives that are distinct and set apart from the cultural morality of the surrounding world.

Living in Light of the Warning

Rather than causing fear, Jude’s warnings are intended to produce vigilance, regular self-examination, and a commitment to spiritual purity. True grace does not excuse lawlessness; instead, it empowers believers to live godly lives in the middle of a corrupt generation. The chapter concludes with a reminder to build ourselves up in the holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, and keeping ourselves in the love of God.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, Almighty God, You are holy, righteous, and just in all Your ways. We thank You for the preservation of Your Word, which serves as both a guide for our steps and a warning for our hearts. Lord, we ask that You grant us the discernment to recognize falsehood and the courage to stand firm in the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. Keep us pure in a world that often loses its moral compass, and let Your grace empower us to live lives that honor You. Protect our minds, our families, and our churches from the compromises of compromise and apathy. We rest in Your sovereign hand, knowing You are able to keep us from stumbling and to present us blameless before Your glorious presence with great joy. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, we pray. Amen.

GRACE OF OUR GOD INTO A LICENSE FOR IMMORALITY / JUDE 1:4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jude 1:4

For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Guarding the Truth: When Grace is Turned into a License

Have you ever seen something beautiful completely misused? It is heartbreaking to watch a good gift get twisted into something harmful. In the short but powerful book of Jude, we receive a urgent warning about this exact scenario happening within the church.

Jude 1:4 exposes a subtle danger that still creeps into our communities today:

“For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.”

The Subtle Slip-In

Notice that Jude says these teachers “secretly slipped in.” They do not usually stand up and announce they are here to corrupt the gospel. Instead, they use familiar language but slowly shift the definitions. They talk about God’s love, but they detach it from God’s truth.

Cheap Grace vs. Costly Grace

The core deception Jude denounces is the turning of God’s grace into a license for immorality. These false teachers suggest that because salvation is a free gift of God’s undeserved favor, the moral law no longer applies to believers.

This perverted teaching leads people to believe:

  • They can indulge in serious sins without fear of consequences.
  • Continual, unrepentant sexual lust is excused by future forgiveness.
  • Mental assent to a belief system replaces a transformed life.

This leaves out a vital truth: true grace transforms us. It does not leave us exactly as we were. While Romans 5:20 reminds us that where sin increased, grace increased all the more, Paul immediately follows it in Romans 6:1-2 by asking, “Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means!”

The Call to Holiness

Preaching forgiveness without holiness is a incomplete gospel. Biblical grace frees us from the penalty of sin and empowers us to break free from the power of sin.

Scripture consistently tethers salvation to a changed life:

  • Hebrews 12:14: Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.
  • 1 Peter 1:16: For it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

Holiness is not about earning God’s love through legalism. It is our loving, dedicated response to a Sovereign Lord. When we truly accept Jesus as our Master, we surrender our desires to His standards. Let us guard our hearts against any teaching that makes light of sin, and instead walk in the true, life-changing grace of Christ.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible gift of Your grace—a favor we could never earn and do not deserve. We ask for spiritual discernment today. Protect our hearts and our churches from subtle deceptions that twist Your goodness into an excuse for compromise. Forgive us for the times we have taken Your mercy for granted. Holy Spirit, convict us where we need to grow, and empower us to live lives characterized by moral purity and dedication to You. May our actions honor Jesus Christ as our true Sovereign and Lord. In His holy name, Amen.

THE FAITH … ENTRUSTED TO THE SAINTS / JUDE 1:3

(KJV) Jude 1:3

Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

Standing Firm: What It Means to Contend for the Faith

We live in a world of constant change. Culture shifts, values adapt, and truths are often treated as subjective opinions. But as believers, we are called to anchor ourselves to something unshakeable.

In Jude 1:3, the apostle Jude shares a sudden shift in his writing plans. He was eager to write about the joy of our shared salvation, but urgency drove him to write a different message instead:

“Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints.”

Jude’s words ring just as loudly today. We are under a solemn, sacred obligation. If we are devoted to Jesus Christ, we are called to be defenders of the truth.

1. Understanding “The Faith”

“The Faith” is not a vague feeling or a customizable spirituality. It is the solid foundation of the Gospel—the good news of forgiveness and eternal life proclaimed by Jesus and His apostles.

  • Unchangeable Truth: It is the fixed, objective truth inspired by the Holy Spirit and preserved in the New Testament.
  • A Way of Life: True faith is active. It must be lived out daily in love, purity, and holiness.
  • Kingdom Power: It is a faith backed by the power of the Holy Spirit, designed to move us to share Christ’s message with the world through spiritual gifts, passion, and authority.

2. The Cost of the Struggle

Jude uses the Greek word epagonizomai for “contend.” This word literally means to struggle, suffer, withstand great pressure, or fight a fierce battle.

Defending the truth is not always comfortable. It requires us to be spiritually determined and completely dependent on the Holy Spirit. Contending means we must deny ourselves, stand strong under pressure, and remain loyal to Christ—even when the personal cost is high.

3. How We Contend Today

Contending for the faith requires action on two frontlines: inside the church and out in the world.

  • Protecting the Truth: We must take a direct stand against ideas that water down the Bible’s authority, compromise its standards, or explain away its power.
  • Proclaiming the Truth: We defend the faith by sharing it. We must boldly preach the original, uncompromised Gospel as the only truth that can restore people to a right relationship with God.

We cannot afford to let the message of Christ be weakened. Let us hold fast to the Word, live out its power, and guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to us.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the unchanging truth of Your written Word. Thank You for the gift of the Gospel, which was once for all entrusted to Your people. Lord, give us the courage, wisdom, and strength to contend earnestly for the faith in our daily lives.

Fill us fresh with Your Holy Spirit so that we do not shrink back under pressure or compromise Your truth for comfort. Help us to live pure lives that reflect Your love, and empower us to boldly proclaim the saving message of Jesus Christ to the world around us. Keep us faithful to the very end.

In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.

JUDE & JAMES – MERCY … IN ABUNDANCE / JUDE 1:1-2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Jude 1:1-2

Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called: Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied.

Multiplied Grace: The Abundant Blessings of Jude 1:1-2

We often rush through the greetings of New Testament letters to get to the “meat” of the message. However, the opening lines of Jude contain a profound theological truth about how God pours out His goodness. Jude does not just wish us a standard greeting. He prays for an exponential outpouring of divine favor.

Chosen, Loved, and Guarded

Before diving into his urgent warning about false teachers, Jude establishes our unshakeable identity in Christ. He addresses his readers with three distinct markers:

  • Called: You are chosen by God for a specific purpose.
  • Loved: You are securely held in the affection of God the Father.
  • Kept: You are continuously guarded and preserved by Jesus Christ.

Your identity is not defined by your struggles, your past, or the chaos of the world. You are called, loved, and kept.

The Divine Math: Blessing by Multiplication

Jude prays a beautiful benediction over his readers: “Mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance.”

The Greek word used here for “be in abundance” is plethuno. It does not merely mean to add more. It literally means to be multiplied.

God does not just add a little bit of mercy to your day to help you get by. He multiplies it. As you grow deeper in your relationship with Him, His virtues compound in your life.

  • Mercy is doubled when you realize how much you have been forgiven.
  • Peace is tripled when it sustains you through an unexpected storm.
  • Love is quadrupled as it overflows from your heart into the lives of those around you.

In the economy of God, blessings are not distributed in short supply. They are compounded over and over again. Whatever grace you need today, expect it in abundance.

A Closing Prayer for Abundance

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the beautiful reminders in the book of Jude. Thank You for calling me out of darkness, loving me with an everlasting affection, and keeping my soul secure in Jesus Christ.

Lord, I ask for Your divine multiplication in my life today. Do not just add to my strength; multiply Your mercy toward my failures. Multiply Your peace within my anxieties. Multiply Your love through my actions so that others may see Your goodness.

May Your grace be compounded in my heart over and over again, doubling and tripling beyond what I could ever ask or imagine.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?

Abraham probably experienced a moment of disbelief (Genesis 18:12). Even people of strong faith may sometimes have doubts. When this happens in our lives, we must hold fast to the promises of God and continue to pray for the Spirit of God to strengthen us in our faith.

CIRCUMCISION / GENESIS 17:11

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 17:11

And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.

CIRCUMCISION / GENESIS 17:11

Circumcision involved cutting away all or part of the foreskin from the penis. This act served as a sign and seal of God’s covenant with Abraham and his descendants.

  1. It was a sign that they had accepted God’s covenant and God himself as their Lord.
  2. It was a seal of the right relationship they had with Him by faith (Genesis 15:6; Romans 4:11).
  3. It was a reminder of God’s promises to them and their obligations to Him.

EVERLASTING POSSESSION / GENESIS 17:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 17:8

And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

EVERLASTING POSSESSION / GENESIS 17:8

God promised to give Abraham and His biological descendants the land of Canaan (Genesis 12:7; Genesis 13:15; 15:7, 18-21). The covenant was “everlasting” from God’s point of view. It could be broken only by Abraham’s descendants (Isaiah 24:5; Jeremiah 31:32), meaning that their obedience to God was the condition upon which they would receive possession of the promised land (Genesis 17:1; Genesis 17:9).
