(KJV) Luke 1:17
And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
SPIRIT AND POWER OF ELIJAH – THE FATHERS TO THEIR CHILDREN / LUKE 1:17
SPIRIT AND POWER OF ELIJAH
In many ways, John would be like the fearless Old Testament prophet, Elijah (Malachi 4:5). Because he is filled with (completely directed and empowered by) the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:15), John’s preaching would focus on revealing what is morally and spiritually right by God’s standards (Luke 3:7-14; Matthew 3:1-10). He would challenge people to turn back toward a right relationship with God (Luke 1:16), as he preached about sin (people’s offenses against God and failure to live up to His standard on their own), righteousness (being in a right relationship with God and doing what is right by God’s standards) and judgment (the fact that we are accountable to God for what we do with our lives, John 16:8). He will turn the hearts of “the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous” (Matthew 11:7). He will not compromise what he knows is right or bend the principles of God’s Word for the sake of status, popularity or security (Luke 3:19-20; Matthew 14:1-11). He will obey God and remain loyal to the truth. All of this says that John will be a “man of God” – a worthy example of God’s character, power and purpose.
THE FATHERS TO THEIR CHILDREN
One of the greatest sins of God’s people throughout their history had been the failure of the fathers to love their sons and daughters enough to teach them the ways and commands of God (Malachi 4:6). With the coming of John and the message of Christ, fathers would once again be challenged and inspired to guide their families in a way that honors God and fulfills His purposes.
- This is a clear statement that one of the key goals of the gospel – the “good news” about Jesus – is to reestablish God’s purposes for families, primarily through a right relationship between fathers and children. (When that relationship breaks down or is absent, families are prone to difficulty and dysfunction.) By challenging people to humbly return to God and give Him the rightful leadership in their lives, Jon would inspire fathers to recommit themselves to their children in an attitude that is pleasing to God.
- If the church today fails to become what God wants it to be, one factor may be a breakdown in family relationships – particularly with fathers abandoning their children – physically, emotionally or spiritually. Though they may deny that they are abandoning or neglecting their children, fathers show a lack of love for their children if they fail to spend time with them or do not teach them God’s Word and standards.
- The following are important passages related to fathers and children: (a) teaching children to be faithful to God and His purposes, Exodus 10:2; 13:8; Deuteronomy 4:9-10; 6:6-25; 11:18-21; Psalms 78:5-8; Isaiah 38:19; Joel 1:3; Ephesians 6:4; 1 Thessalonians 2:11. (b) loving, correcting and disciplining children, Psalms 103:13; Proverbs 3:12; 13:24; 23:13-14; Malachi 4:6; Luke 11:11-13: 2 Corinthians 12:14; Ephesians 6:4; Colossians 3:21; 1 Thessalonians 2:11; 1 Timothy 3:4-5, 12; 5:8; Titus 2:4; Hebrews 12:7. (c) Praying for their children, Genesis 17:18; 2 Samuel 12:16; 1 Chronicles 22:11-12; 29:19; Job 1:5; Ephesians 3:14-19; John 17:1.
