And after three days and an half the spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.

TERROR STRUCK THOSE WHO SAW THEM / REVELATION 11:11

Though the bodies of the two witnesses have lain dead in the streets for over three days, probably somewhat disfigured by now, God breathes His creative life into them, and they are restored to complete vitality. This will be a sign that the reign of the antichrist and the persistence of evil will be short-lived. Because of the miraculous resurrection of the two witnesses (Revelation 11:11-12) and God’s judgment (Revelation 11:13), fear will grip people, and they will realize that there is no match for God’s power. His enemies will even witness the voice from heaven and the ascension of the two men (Revelation 11:12). The events that immediately follow will further demonstrate God’s miraculous power and authority overall. None of this, however, will cause people as a whole to turn to God (Revelation 9:20), though some who witness these events will receive the message of the two witnesses and give honor to God (Revelation 11:13).

For those who view the witnesses as symbolizing the church and its influence in end-time society (Revelation 11:3), this event is sometimes viewed as the point when the rapture of the church takes place (when Christ’s followers are caught up from the earth to meet Him in the air and go to heaven with Him). Again, this view would mean that the church is not taken from the world until part way through the tribulation period (a mid-tribulation rapture). Such a view differs from the primary position of this study Bible, which sees the church (all faithful followers of Christ) being suddenly taken from the world prior to the beginning of the seven-year tribulation period (a pre-tribulation rapture; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).

And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.

THE INHABITANTS OF THE EARTH WILL GLOAT / REVELATION 11:9

Some suppose that through television or some form of media that all people of the world will see the dead bodies of the two men lying in the city streets. Though this will certainly be possible, it does not actually say that everyone will see them, but simply that people “of” (from, out of) all people groups and nationalities will see, perhaps those from the city who are in the immediate area and able to observe what has taken place firsthand. Still, the news of the death of the two witnesses will certainly flash around the world, causing widespread celebration – like a worldwide Christmas party (even with the giving of gifts) – without Christ. God’s message from the witnesses must have cut to people’s hearts and stirred up great guilt in their consciences for them to feel such relief, even joy, over their deaths. But when it appears that the antichrist has prevailed, people will feel free to carry on with their wicked ways without fear of judgment.

And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.

THE BEAST … KILL THEM / REVELATION 11:7

The two witnesses are killed because they brought the prophetic truth of Christ (Revelation 19:10) to an ungodly antichrist audience, speaking out boldly against the sins of the people. Jerusalem is called “Sodom” because of its immoral conduct and “Egypt” because of its worldliness (Revelation 11:8). The beast is the antichrist (Revelation 13:1; 14:9, 11; 15:2; 16:2; 17:13, 13: 19:20; 20:10), or the “man of lawlessness” (2 Thessalonians 2:3-10). Note that the two witnesses were not killed until they finished their work. This is true of all of God’s servants who remain faithful to Him. (Interpreters who view the witnesses as representing the church’s presence in the end-time world [Revelation 11:3] see this act as a description of the antichrist abolishing the church’s freedom and severely persecuting and killing Christians.)

OLIVE TREES … LAMPSTANDS / REVELATION 11:4

These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.

OLIVE TREES … LAMPSTANDS / REVELATION 11:4

“The two olive trees” here represent the oil of anointing (commissioning, empowering) of the Holy Spirit flowing through God’s servants (Zechariah 4:3, regarding a similar description of the Sprit’s anointing upon Zerubbabel, the governor, and Joshua, the high priest). In Revelation, the “lampstands” symbolize the churches of Jesus Christ (Revelation 1:12-13, 20; Zechariah 4:2). By using this language, John says that the two witnesses will be greatly empowered by the Holy Spirit in order to fulfill God’s mission and reveal the light of God’s truth through both words and miraculous signs (Zechariah 4:2-14). In other words, they will proclaim a full and clear message from God so that no one will have an excuse to deny the truth.

MY TWO WITNESSES / REVELATION 11:3

And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.

MY TWO WITNESSES / REVELATION 11:3

The Greek tense changes here to the future so as to indicate what will happen during the “42 months” just mentioned. Though the interpretation of this chapter is among the most difficult in Revelation, it appears that God will send two witnesses to preach the message of Christ and prophesy about the future. They will possess great supernatural power (Revelation 11:5-6) and perform their ministry in the power of the Holy Spirit. They will be a great threat to the antichrist and the entire wicked world for a period of 1,260 days, counteracting the deceptive signs and wonders performed by the prophets of the antichrist (Revelation 13:13-14). The two witnesses have the power of both Moses and Elijah (Malachi 4:5).

Note that some interpreters do not necessarily regard these witnesses as two literal individuals. Instead, they see them as representative of God’s law (given through Moses) and the prophets (Elijah), who challenged people in regard to their relationship with God and who spoke of things that would be fulfilled through Jesus Christ. Those who hold this view often regard these witnesses as representing the church (particularly bold, testifying believers) in the last days. The church’s presence would bring spiritual conviction (exposing sin and convincing people of their guilt in relation to God), and its ministry would directly challenge the antichrist’s evil purposes. This view would mean that the church is still in the world (Christ has not yet taken His followers to heaven through the rapture) for at least part way into the seven-year period of the antichrist’s rise to power (Revelation 11:11).

But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

TRAMPLE ON THE HOLY CITY / REVELATION 11:2

During the tribulation, Israel and the “holy city” will be oppressed by the Gentiles (people of all nations who are not Israelite or Jewish) and suffer greatly for 42 months (Luke 21:24). This will, in part, be judgement for Israel’s rejection of Christ throughout the history of the church and for following immoral practices like those of Sodom (Revelation 11:8, 13). The “42 months’ probably refer to the final three and one-half years of the tribulation (Dainiel 7:25; 9:27; 12:7).

Revelation 11 continues an interlude (which began in Revelation 10) prior to the sounding of the seventh trumpet and the final series of revealed judgments. This passage discusses Israel and the temple and gives an evaluation of her spiritual life. The events recorded here occur in the city where the “Lord was crucified,” that is, Jerusalem (Revelation 11:8). Israel is basically still in unbelief regarding Christ during this part of the tribulation. The “temple of God” could not refer to Herod’s Temple, which had been destroyed by the armies of Titus in A.D. 70, twenty-five years before Revelation was written. This may imply the existence of a new temple in Jerusalem in the end times, possibly built after the antichrist makes a covenant with the Jews (Daniel 9:27), but which will later be defiled by the antichrist (Revelation 13:14-15; Daniel 9:27; 12:11; 2 Thessalonians 2:4). The measuring of the temple signifies God’s measuring of the spiritual condition of the Jewish people (Ezekiel 40; Zechariah 2). Measuring in the Bible is often a symbol of preparation for either destruction or preservation, (Numbers 35:5; Psalms 60:6; Isaiah 65:8). In this case, God is certainly looking to preserve Israel.

THEY REALIZED THEY WERE NAKED / GENESIS 3:7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 3:7

And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

Beyond the Fig Leaves: Understanding Genesis 3:7 and God’s Provision

In the beginning, humanity existed in a state of perfect transparency. Genesis 2:25 notes that Adam and Eve were both naked, and they felt no shame. There were no walls, no secrets, and no guilt. They were completely exposed before God and each other, yet perfectly safe.

Then came the rebellion.

When they ate the forbidden fruit, their eyes were opened, but their vision was distorted. Genesis 3:7 tells us, “Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.”

The Shift from Innocence to Awareness

Before the fall, nakedness was a symbol of moral innocence. After sin entered the world, that same openness became a source of vulnerability and shame. The sudden awareness of their physical nakedness reflected a deeper, spiritual reality: their corrupt human condition.

With sin came the birth of ungodly desires. The human heart, once aligned with God, was now prone to temptation—the urge to misuse God-given desires in ways that contradict His perfect design. Nakedness in a fallen world was no longer safe; it became linked to vulnerability, exploitation, and improper desire.

Man’s Coverings vs. God’s Provision

Adam and Eve’s immediate reaction to their guilt was to hide and build their own defenses. They stitched together fig leaves—a fragile, temporary fix for a permanent, deep-seated problem. We still do this today when we try to cover our own mistakes, guilt, and insecurities with superficial fixes.

But human efforts can never truly cover sin.

Out of mercy, God stepped in. Genesis 3:21 records a pivotal moment: “The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.” To make these garments, an animal had to die. This was the very first sacrifice, a shadow of the ultimate sacrifice that would come centuries later through Jesus Christ. God showed that covering human shame requires a provision only He can make.

The Call to Modesty Today

Because of the brokenness and temptation that ungodly exposure introduces into the world, God established boundaries. Clothing was His idea, designed to protect humanity, preserve dignity, and restrain temptation.

Today, this principle carries over into the New Testament. In 1 Timothy 2:9, believers are commanded to dress modestly, with decency and propriety. Modesty is not about hiding beauty; it is about honoring God, respecting others, and recognizing that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. It shifts the focus from outward attention-seeking to inward character and reverence for God’s boundaries.

When we dress with modesty and live with integrity, we honor the rescue story that began in Genesis—moving from the shame of our own “fig leaves” into the grace of being clothed by God.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We thank You for Your immense mercy and grace. Lord, You see us exactly as we are—none of our flaws, guilt, or secrets are hidden from Your sight. Forgive us for the times we try to sew our own fig leaves, trying to hide our shortcomings through our own strength.

Thank You for covering our shame through the sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus Christ. We ask that You create in us clean hearts and renew a right spirit within us. Help us to guard our minds against ungodly desires and temptations.

Give us the wisdom and desire to walk in modesty, decency, and holiness. Let our outward presentation and our inward character reflect Your beauty, honoring the boundaries You set for our protection. Clothe us daily in Your righteousness, and let our lives bring glory to Your holy name.

In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

The Sacred Foundation: Understanding Genesis 2:24

In the opening chapters of Scripture, God establishes the blueprint for human relationships. Genesis 2:24 stands as the cornerstone of this design: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Long before nations, governments, or even the church existed, God ordained marriage and the family unit as the first and most vital institution on earth.

The Divine Order of Marriage

God’s plan for marriage is both specific and exclusive. It consists of one covenant relationship between one male and one female, designed to unite them physically, emotionally, and spiritually. This sacred boundaries established in creation inherently rule out practices that deviate from His intent, including adultery, polygamy, homosexuality, and unbiblical divorce. As Jesus later reaffirmed in Matthew 19:6, “What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

The Mechanics of Covenant: Leave, Cleave, and Become One

True biblical marriage requires three distinct actions:

  • Leaving: Prioritizing the new marital bond over the original parental family unit.
  • Holding Fast: Committing to an unbreakable, lifelong covenant of loyalty.
  • Becoming One Flesh: Sealing this spiritual alignment through physical and emotional intimacy.

When we honor this divine order, marriage becomes a powerful reflection of Christ’s love for the church—built on sacrificial commitment, purity, and enduring faithfulness.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the beautiful gift of marriage and for establishing it as a sacred institution from the very beginning of creation. Thank You for the wisdom found in Your Word, which provides a steady anchor for our families and relationships.

We pray today for marriages across the world. Lord, give husbands and wives the grace to leave, cleave, and truly become one flesh according to Your perfect design. Protect their covenants from the distractions, temptations, and pressures of this world. Infuse their homes with supernatural love, unwavering loyalty, and mutual respect.

For those who are married, grant them the strength to remain faithful to their vows. For families everywhere, we ask for healing, unity, and a renewed commitment to Your biblical blueprint. May our relationships always honor You and reflect the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ to a world in need of hope.

TRUTH / JOHN 4:24

Because Jesus Christ is the truth (John 1:14; 5:31; 14:6; Luke 4:25; 9:27; 12:44), to live in unity with Christ requires speaking the truth (1 Corinthians 5:8; Ephesians 4:25) and living by the truth. People who claim to have a relationship with Christ (that is, to be spiritually saved), yet do not live and speak the truth as revealed in God’s Word, are deceived (1 John 1:6). In time, they will expose the real condition of their hearts (John 8:44; Acts 5:3). They are opposed to God and will have no place in the kingdom of heaven (Revelation 21:8, 27; 22:15). The Bible teaches that a liar is of “the synagogue of Satan” (Revelation 3:9).
