(KJV) Zechariah 4:3
And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof.
TWO OLIVE TREES / ZECHARIAH 4:3
The two olive trees represent the royal and priestly ministries of Zerubbabel, the governor, and Joshua, the high priest (Haggai 1:1), who were “anointed to serve the Lord of all the earth” (Zechariah 4:14; to be anointed meant commissioned and empowered to serve, and it often was done in a ceremony involving the symbolic pouring of oil over the individual). Both Zerubbabel and Joshua were descendants of King David, just as Jesus Christ (the final and complete Priest and King) would be.
- The trees symbolize a continual source of oil -representing the Spirit’s power – available to God’s people. The two leaders were to guide the people into a life characterized by the power of the Spirit (Zechariah 4:12).
- In their fullest meaning, the trees represent the kingly and priestly ministries of Jesus Christ Himself. He serves in the role of both supreme Ruler and Mediator between God and people. He is also the One who baptizes His followers in the Holy Spirit and keeps them full of His power.
