THE NAZIRITE MAY DRINK WINE / NUMBERS 6:20

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Numbers 6:20

And the priest shall wave them for a wave offering before the Lord: this is holy for the priest, with the wave breast and heave shoulder: and after that the Nazarite may drink wine.

THE NAZIRITE MAY DRINK WINE / NUMBERS 6:20

After the Nazirite ended the time of the vow, or dedicated service to God, he or she was permitted to drink wine (Hebrew yayin). At this time, the ban against using fermented wine (Hebrew yayin) was in effect only for those who were set apart for serve to God (Numbers 6:1-4; Leviticus 10:9-11). But as his people came to fully understand God’s highest plan for humankind, He would make it very clear that all His people were not to drink fermented yayin that could make them drunk (Proverbs 23:29-35; 23:31).

(KJV) Numbers 6:14

PRESENT HIS OFFERINGS / NUMBERS 6:14

After completing his vow of separation, the Nazirite was to offer the same kind of sacrifices that the high priest offered on the day of his ordination (Leviticus 8 – 9). All of these men or women (Numbers 6:2), who had completely dedicated themselves to God, were as important in God’s sight as the highest minister in the congregation. Greatness in God’s kingdom is not based on position or power. It is based on consecration and commitment (Luke 22:24-30).

HAIR … GROW LONG / NUMBERS 6:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Numbers 6:5

All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the Lord, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow.

HAIR … GROW LONG / NUMBERS 6:5

The Nazirite was to let his hair grow long as a visible symbol of his consecration to the Lord. According to Paul, long hair was normally a shame to a man (1 Corinthians 11:14). So, for a Nazirite to have long hair may have symbolized his willingness to bear words of shame that came from the people. All of this was for the Lord’s honor. The command not to go near a dead person (Numbers 6:6) taught that death was never God’s will when He created the human race. Death is the opposite of life and the end result of sin. Therefore, a corpse was viewed as unclean (Leviticus 12:1-2; Leviticus 13:3).

(KJV) Numbers 6:3

He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried.

GRAPE JUICE / NUMBERS 6:3

The word translated “juice” (Hebrew mishrah) refers to a drink made by steeping, or soaking, the grapes or the remains of pressed grapes in water.

NAZIRITE / NUMBERS 6:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Numbers 6:2

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the Lord:

NAZIRITE / NUMBERS 6:2

The word “Nazirite” (Hebrew nazir, from nazar, “to set apart”) was the term used for one who was set apart and dedicated completely to the Lord. The dedication, or period of holy commitment, could be for a specific period of time or for life (Judges 13:5; 1 Samuel 1:11).

  1. The Nazirites were raised up by God Himself in order that through their lifestyle they might demonstrate His highest standard of holiness, sanctity and commitment in the people’s presence (Amos 2:11-12).
  2. The Nazirite vow was completely voluntary and designed to teach Israel that total devotion to God must come first from a person’s heart. That heart commitment, however, needs to be expressed in self-denial (Numbers 6:3-4), visible profession (Numbers 6:5) and personal purity (Numbers 6:6-8). The Nazirite’s complete devotion serves as an example of what every Christian should seek to be.

WOMAN STAND BEFORE THE LORD / NUMBERS 5:18

(KJV) Numbers 5:18

After the priest has had the woman stand before the Lord, he shall loosen her hair and place in her hands the reminder-offering, the grain offering for jealousy, while he himself holds the bitter water that brings a curse.

WOMAN STAND BEFORE THE LORD / NUMBERS 5:18

If a husband had reason to think that his wife had committed adultery but there was no evidence, the husband could have the wife brought before the Lord. There her guilt or innocence would be determined. This was to protect her if she was innocent. She would become sick as a result of God’s judgment only if she was guilty (Numbers 5:21-28).

SEND AWAY FROM THE CAMP / NUMBERS 5:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Numbers 5:2

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Command the children of Israel, that they put out of the camp every leper, and every one that hath an issue, and whosoever is defiled by the dead:

SEND AWAY FROM THE CAMP / NUMBERS 5:2

People who had infectious, or contagious, diseases or discharges from their skin, or those who had come into contact with the dead, were ceremonially unclean (Leviticus 12:1-2; Leviticus 13:3). Such people were sent outside the camp because God would not dwell in the presence of uncleanness (Numbers 5:). The New Testament applies the moral principle behind this rule to church members who boldly, and without shame, stand against God’s truth or righteousness. They must be put out of the congregation if the body of believers expects to receive God’s blessing and presence (1 Corinthians 5:2; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18; 2 Thessalonians 3:14; 2 John 10- 11; Matthew 18:15).

(KJV) Numbers 4:20

But they shall not go in to see when the holy things are covered, lest they die.

OR THEY WILL DIE / NUMBERS 4:20

God’s holiness will either destroy (Numbers 4:15, 20; Leviticus 10:2) or sanctify (make holy) (Isaiah 6:1-7; Leviticus 19:2). God was teaching that His presence brings blessing if He is obeyed and honored, but it brings judgment if He is treated with disrespect and dishonor (1 Corinthians 11:27-29).

FIRSTBORN / NUMBERS 3:43

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Numbers 3:43

And all the firstborn males by the number of names, from a month old and upward, of those that were numbered of them, were twenty and two thousand two hundred and threescore and thirteen.

FIRSTBORN / NUMBERS 3:43

The number given for the “firstborn males” was small compared with the nearly 600,000 men mentioned in Numbers 1:46. Some have explained that the smaller number of “firstborn” males is the count only of those who were born between the time of the exodus (Exodus 13:1-2) and the numbering census of the tribes that occurred thirteen months later.

ANOINTED PRIESTS / NUMBERS 3:2-3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Numbers 3:2-3

And these are the names of the sons of Aaron; Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests which were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest’s office.

ANOINTED PRIESTS / NUMBERS 3:2-3

The purpose of anointing the priests was to “ordain” them to God’s service. This meant that their lives were set apart from all other things and given completely to serve God.

  1. Likewise, in the New Testament, when believers are anointed by the Holy Spirit, they are set apart and empowered for service and witness in God’s kingdom (Acts 1:8; Acts 2:4).
  2. The Hebrew name “Messiah” and the Greek name “Christ” both mean “the Anointed One” (Matthew 1:1). Christ did all of His works and ministry under the anointing of the Holy Spirit.
