The Radiance of His Glory: Understanding Hebrews 1:3
Have you ever tried to look directly at the sun? Within a fraction of a second, you have to look away. The light is too intense, too blinding, and too powerful for human eyes to behold. Yet, that same sun warms our planet, lights our days, and sustains physical life on Earth from millions of miles away.
In a much more profound and spiritual way, God’s glory is infinitely more intense than the brightest star. Because of our human limitations and brokenness, we cannot look upon the full, unveiled majesty of God and live.
But God, in His infinite love, did not want to remain distant or hidden. He made Himself visible, approachable, and tangible.
This is the beautiful truth anchored in Hebrews 1:3:
“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.”
Let’s unpack this short but monumentally deep verse to see what it reveals about Jesus, our world, and our daily lives.
1. Jesus is the Radiance of God’s Glory
The writer of Hebrews begins by calling Jesus the “radiance” of God’s glory. Think back to the illustration of the sun. You cannot separate the sun from its brightness; the light is the natural, necessary expression of the sun itself.
Jesus is not a reflection of God the way the moon reflects the sun. He is the radiance itself. When Jesus walked the earth, healed the sick, comforted the broken, and spoke words of life, He was the literal outshining of God’s heart. If you want to know what God’s glory looks like, look at Jesus.
2. Jesus is the Exact Representation of His Being
The Greek word used here for “exact representation” is charaktēr, which originally referred to the die or stamp used to impress an image onto a coin. The mark on the coin perfectly matches the engraving on the stamp.
Jesus is the perfect imprint of God’s nature. He possesses the same character, the same love, the same justice, and the same power. Jesus Himself affirmed this in John 14:9 when He said, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.” We never have to wonder what God thinks about us or how He reacts to our pain. Jesus shows us exactly who God is.
3. Jesus Sustains the Universe
Sometimes it feels like our world is spinning out of control. We look at the news, or even our own personal lives, and wonder if everything is about to fall apart.
Hebrews 1:3 gives us an incredible anchor of peace: Jesus is “sustaining all things by his powerful word.” The universe is not a runaway train. Your life is not left to random chance. The same cosmic power that keeps the planets in orbit is actively holding your life together right now. He speaks, and reality listens.
4. Jesus Provided Purification and Sat Down
This is the climax of the verse. Jesus came to earth, revealed the Father, and held creation together—but He also looked at our deepest problem: sin. Our brokenness separated us from a holy God.
Jesus didn’t just give us good advice; He provided purification. Through His death on the cross, He washed away the guilt of our past, present, and future.
And what did He do after that? He sat down.
In the Old Testament tabernacle, the priests never sat down because their work of offering sacrifices was never finished. But Jesus cried out, “It is finished!” He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven because the work of your salvation is completely, utterly done. You don’t have to perform or strive to earn God’s love; you just have to receive it.
Final Thoughts
Today, whatever you are facing, remember who is on the throne. You are loved by a God who made Himself known in Jesus, who holds your world in His hands, and who has already paid the price to bring you close to Him. Rest in His finished work today.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We stand in awe of the beauty and majesty of Your Son, Jesus. Thank You for not remaining hidden in the heavens, but for revealing Your heart, Your love, and Your glory to us through Him. Jesus, thank You for being the perfect radiance of the Father, making the invisible God visible to our hearts.
We thank You that our lives are not left to chance. Forgive us for the times we worry, forgetting that You are actively sustaining all things by the power of Your word. Hold our hearts, our families, and our futures in Your secure hands today.
Thank You, Lord, for the cross. Thank You that our sins are purified and that You are now seated in victory at the right hand of the Father. Because Your work is finished, we can live in perfect peace, freedom, and grace.
Align our thoughts with Your truth today, and let our lives reflect a fraction of Your magnificent glory to the world around us.
