TO DO GOOD WORKS / EPHESIANS 2:10

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 2:10

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

TO DO GOOD WORKS / EPHESIANS 2:10

Although we cannot be spiritually saved and made right with God by good works (Ephesians 2:8-9), God still desires that the lives of Christians be characterized by good works. It is part of what we are created to do. He has even prepared good things for us to do. We do not do these things to gain God’s favor, but to show our love and gratitude to God for the favor He has already shown us by His gracious gift of spiritual salvation through faith in Christ (Titus 2:14; 3:8). Our good works for God also provide an opportunity to influence others for Christ, showing them an example of His love and goodness and leading them to the point of receiving Christ’s forgiveness and new life for themselves (Matthew 5:14-16).

NOT BY WORKS / EPHESIANS 2:8-9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 2:8-9

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.

NOT BY WORKS / EPHESIANS 2:8-9

One cannot be “saved” and gain a right relationship with God by good works, acts of love, devoted efforts to keep God’s commandments or any sort of religious routines. One can be spiritually saved only by God’s grace – His unearned favor, love and enablement. There are clear Biblical reasons for the fact:

  1. The unsaved (those who have not been restored to a personal relationship with God) are spiritually dead (Ephesians 2:1), under Satan’s influence and control (Ephesians 2:2), enslaved to sin (Ephesians 2:3) and under God’s condemning judgment (Ephesians 2:3).
  2. In order to be saved (restored to a right relationship with God), one must respond to and accept God’s provision of mercy through His Son, Jesus (Ephesians 2:4-5), be forgiven of sin (Romans 4:7-8), be made spiritually alive (Colossians 1:13), be freed from the power of Satan and sin (Colossians 1:13), be made a new creation (Ephesians 2:10; 2 Corinthians 5:17) and receive the inner presence of the Holy Spirit (John 7:37-39; 20:22). No amount of self-effort can accomplish these things.
  3. Salvation comes to an individual by God’s gift of grace – His unearned favor that comes as a response to the person’s godly faith (Ephesians 2:5, 8). God’s gift of grace includes the following: (a) God calls people to repent (to turn from their own rebellious way, accept His forgiveness, surrender their lives to Christ and follow His purposes for them) and to accept His invitation to new life by faith in His Son, Jesus (Acts 2:38; Matthew 3:2). Along with this invitation comes the work of the Holy Spirit within a person, giving him or her the power and ability to respond to God. (b) Those who respond in faith and accept Christ as Lord and Savior – the Forgiver of their sins and Leader of their lives – receive additional grace. This allows them to be spiritually renewed, or “born again” (John 3:7), by the Spirit. In the process, the Holy Spirit comes to reside within them, also making available Christ’s invitation to be filled with the Spirit for additional power to communicate His message of forgiveness and new life to others (Acts 1:8; 2:38; Ephesians 5:18). (c) Those who become new creations in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17) receive continuing grace to live for Christ, resist sin and serve God’s purposes (Romans 8:13-14; 2 Corinthians 9:8). God’s grace operates within committed followers of Christ, giving them both the desire and the power to fulfill God’s good purpose for their lives (Philippians 2:12; Philippian 2:13). From beginning to end, salvation is by the grace of God.

THOSE … DIOBEDIENT / EPHESIANS 2:1-2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 2:1-2

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

THOSE … DIOBEDIENT / EPHESIANS 2:1-2

Ephesians 2:1-4 reveal several reasons why Christians should have great compassion and mercy for those who do not know Christ, who are still going their own way and are still trapped in their sins (resistance, opposition against God).

  1. All who are living apart from Christ are under the influence of “the ruler of the kingdom of the air,” Satan (Ephesians 2:2). Satan has blinded their minds to the truth of God (Ephesians 2:2; 2 Corinthians 4:3-4). They are enslaved to sin and the ungodly cravings of their sinful nature (Ephesians 2:3; Luke 4:18).
  2. Because of the spiritual condition of people who have not been transformed through a personal relationship with Christ, they cannot understand or accept the truth without God’s grace (His undeserved favor, love, help and enablement, Ephesians 2:5, 8; 1 Corinthians 1:18; Titus 2:11-14).
  3. Christians must see everyone from the Biblical perspective. They should view with compassion those who are caught up in immoral behavior and ungodly pride because such people are in spiritual slavery to sin and Satan (Ephesians 2:1-3; John 3:16).
  4. Those who are without Christ are still responsible for their sins and offenses against God. That is because God gives every human being enough spiritual light and grace – even in their own consciences – that they can recognize God and turn to Him and escape their slavery to sin because of the freedom provided through Christ (John 1:9; Romans 1:18-32; 2: 1-16).

FIVE LOAVES … TWO FISH … THANKSGIVING AT MEALTIMES / MARK 6:41

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 6:41

Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.

FIVE LOAVES … TWO FISH … THANKSGIVING AT MEALTIMES / MARK 6:41

Before eating, Christ thanked His heavenly Father for the food. Christians today ought to follow His example and give thanks at every meal as a means of recognizing God’s care and provision for us. This opportunity becomes an act of worship that honors God. For more on giving thanks before meals, see 1 Samuel 9:13; Matthew 14:19; Matthew 15:36; 26:26; Romans 14:6; 1 Corinthians 10:31; 1 Timothy 4:4-5.

COMPASSION / MARK 6:34

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 6:34

And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.

COMPASSION / MARK 6:34

Compassion is a deep, heartfelt emotion that involves feeling deep sorrow for another’s suffering and misfortune. But it goes beyond a feeling of identifying with the afflicted. True compassion is willing to take action to help a person in need. It is a character trait both of God (Deuteronomy 30:3; 2 Kings 13:23; Psalms 78:38; 11:4; 15:32; Luke 7:13). For this reason, God expects an attitude of compassion to be a part of the Christian’s life (Matthew 18:33; Luke 10:33).

ANOINTED … WITH OIL / MARK 6:13

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 6:13

And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.

ANOINTED … WITH OIL / MARK 6:13

Healing by anointing with oil (putting a little oil on the person who needs healing) is mentioned only here and in James 5:14. In the ancient world, olive oil was commonly used as a medicine or a salve (Isaiah 1:6; Luke 10:34), but God’s people throughout the Old Testament used it as part of ceremonies that installed or commissioned leaders for service to God. The oil in this case was probably used as a symbol of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit (Zechariah 4:3-6; Zechariah 4:3; Zechariah 4:6) and as a point of contact to encourage faith.

LACK OF FAITH / MARK 6:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 6:6

And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.

LACK OF FAITH / MARK 6:6

Just as a lack of faith hindered the working of miracles in Jesus’ hometown, so unbelief in the church still gets in the way of powerful things Christ desires to do among His people today. Failing to accept what the Bible says is true, denying that the gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12; 1 Corinthians 14) are for the church today or rejecting God’s standards of right and wrong will prevent the Lord from showing His power among His people. Christ’s followers must maintain an intense spiritual hunger for God’s Word and pray, “increase our faith” (Luke 17:5; Matthew 17:20).

JESUS … A PROPHET / MARK 6:4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DIALY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 6:4

But Jesus, said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.

JESUS … A PROPHET / MARK 6:4

Jesus is portrayed in the Gospels as a prophet (Mark 6:4, 15; Matthew 21:11; Luke 4:24; Acts 3:20-23) in a way that was consistent with the mission and message of God’s prophets throughout the Old Testament. The following characteristics identify Jesus as a prophet:

  1. He was a man filled and empowered by the Holy Spirit and full of the knowledge of God’s Word (Matthew 21:42; 22:29; Luke 4:1, 18; 24:27; John 3:34).
  2. His life was characterized by intimate spiritual unity and relationship with God, His Father (Luke 5:16).
  3. He gave prophetic predictions, some of which have already taken place and others which pertain to the end times yet to come (Matthew 24; Luke 19:43-44).
  4. He performed symbolic actions that represented spiritual truths and expressed a sincere passion for God’s honor (Matthew 21:12-13; John 2:13-17).
  5. He exposed the shallow and unfaithful hearts of the religious leaders and criticized the way they followed their own traditions rather than God’s Word (Mark 7:7-9, 13).
  6. He shared God’s sorrow and suffering over the spiritually lost condition of those who refused to turn from their own ways and follow God (Luke 13:34; 19:41).
  7. He focused on the moral and ethical principles of God’s Word (holiness, justice, righteousness, love, mercy) in contrast to relying on religious ceremonies to keep people in a right relationship with God (Mark 12:38-40; Matthew 23:1-36).
  8. He proclaimed the supreme and final reign and judgment of God (Matthew 11:22, 24; 10:15; Luke 10:12, 14).
  9. He called people to repentance – to change their attitude toward God, admit their sin, turn from their own way and begin following God and His purposes (Mark 6:12; Matthew 4:17).
