(KJV) John 8:36

If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

Whether they recognize it or not, people who do not have a personal relationship with Christ are slaves to sin, Satan and their own immoral behavior (John 8:34; Romans 6:17-20). They follow the selfish desires and cravings of their own sinful nature and the ways of the devil (Ephesians 2:1-3).

1. True followers of Christ, who rely on the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit who lives in them, are set free from the power of sin and immorality (Romans 6:17-22; 8:1-17). When they face temptations, they now have the power to do what God desires and requires. They are free to be God’s servants and to do what is right (Romans 6:18, 22).
2. Freedom from slavery to sin (from constantly giving in to temptation and experiencing the consequences of going own our own way) is one sure standard by which we can tell if we are truly following Christ. If we have a personal relationship with Christ, it should be evident that God’s power has changed our lives and is continuing to transform our character, making us more like Jesus. Anyone who is presently caught up in immoral and ungodly behavior either has never experienced true spiritual birth (salvation) or has given themselves back over to sin and come from slavery to sin (Romans 6:16, 21, 23; 8:12-13; 1 John 3:15).
3. This does not mean that Christians are free from doing spiritual battle against sin. Throughout our lives, we will have to constantly fight against the pressures of the world, our own sinful nature (natural-born tendencies) and the forces of Satan (Galatians 5:17-18; Ephesians 6:11-12). Complete freedom from temptation and the influence of sin will come only after we die and go to be with Christ or when Christ returns for His faithful followers. What Christ offers us now is His life-changing power to help us overcome evil and temptation and to grow spiritually. This power, given through the Holy Spirit, can set us free from the tendency to defy God and go our own way (Galatians 5:16-24) and can enable us to live in a spiritually pure and blameless way (Ephesians 1:4).

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

Jesus never encouraged His disciples to rely on past faith or experiences. Confidence about spiritual salvation is appropriate only “if you hold to my teaching.” Genuine followers of Christ continue to obey and live by the words of Christ (John 15:6; Luke 21:19).

 Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.

Jesus was saying that He did not judge by their limited and often hypocritical standards. Of course, in the end, He will judge all of humankind by His own perfect standards (John 8:16, 26).

(KJV) John 8:11

She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

Jesus’ attitude reflects His mercy and His desire to forgive sin and restore people to a right relationship with God (John 3:16). He does not condemn the woman as if she is unfit for forgiveness but treats her with kindness and patience in order to lead her to repent (to turn from her “life of sin”). If she responds to Jesus’ challenge, she can receive spiritual salvation, no matter what she did in her past (Luke 7:47). 

1. However, it is most important to also know that Jesus is forgiving the sinner, not accepting the sin of adultery (sexual relations with anyone other than one’s own spouse) and the heartbreak it causes for both adults and children.
2. What Jesus offers this woman is an opportunity for salvation and a way out of her sinful life. But she will only escape God’s punishment if she turns to live as part of God’s kingdom (Romans 2:1-10).

So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

In an effort to trap Jesus, the authorities had actually twisted the law and had possibly even staged this event. This particular method of execution was used when there was a very specific set of circumstances (Deuteronomy 22:23-24) that may or may not have applied here. In addition, the law would have required the execution of both parties involved in sexual relations outside of their own marriages (Leviticus 20:10; Deuteronomy 22:22). Still, this situation presented a real test for Jesus because the Romans did not allow the Jews to carry out death sentences (John 18:31). Yet Jesus could have been accused of not supporting the Jewish law if He simply dismissed the case. Jesus’ answer took away the opportunity for the authorities to trap Him in His own words because He still talked about throwing the stones, so He could not be accused of ignoring the law. However, he actually prevented the authorities from taking action into their own hands. We must be careful not to use Jesus’ words here to justify the tolerance of sin in the church or to treat lightly the moral failure of those who claim to be Christians. To do so means we too are rejecting what the Bible (and thus, God) is saying about sin among God’s people. 

1. The church’s conduct and response toward sinners outside the church who may have had little chance to respond to God, and its conduct towards those within the church who sin and defy Christ, are two different situations.

God’s Word teaches that open, unashamed sins committed by those within the church must not be tolerated (Revelation 2:20), but ought to be confronted and exposed (Luke 17:3; 1 Corinthians 5:1-13; 2 Corinthians 2:6-8; Ephesians 5:11; 1 Timothy 4:2; Titus 1:13; 2:15; Revelation 3:19; Matthew 13:30).
