The Lord is simply stating a fact about the corruption and depravity (extreme moral loss) of human nature. Human beings are born with an inward pull toward evil. The pull of this sinful nature is evident from early childhood (Romans 3:10-18).

THE SONS OF GOD / GENESIS 6:1-2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 6:1-2

And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

2That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

THE SONS OF GOD / GENESIS 6:1-2

The phrase, “sons of God,” most likely refers to men who were descendants of the godly family line of Seth (Deuteronomy 14:1; 32:5; Psalms 73:15; Hosea 1:10). But they began to intermarry (from marriages between two groups) with the “daughters of men,” who likely were women from Cin’s ungodly family (Genesis 4:16). The theory that the “sons of God” were angels is unlikely because Jesus said that angels do not marry (Matthew 22:30; Mark 12:25). This union of the godly with the ungodly led to “wickedness” (Genesis 6:5). The godly became so preoccupied with evil that all the world became corrupt and filled with violence (Genesis 6:11-13).

HOW GREAT MAN’S WICKEDNESS / GENESIS 6:5

In Noah’s day, sin was extremely evident in two ways: sexual lust (Genesis 6:2) and violence (Genesis 6:11). Human wickedness and corruption have not changed. Evil that we once could not have imagined, including sexual sins of all kinds as well as violence, is evident throughout the world (Matthew 24:37-39; Romans 1:32).

The reason that people lived so long during Adam’s time may have been because sin’s corrupting influence had just started to affect the health of the earth (the environment) and the physical bodies of all human beings. By Abraham’s time, it was normal to live only about two hundred years.

WRITTEN ACCOUNT OF ADAM’S LINE / GENESIS 5:1

This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;

WRITTEN ACCOUNT OF ADAM’S LINE / GENESIS 5:1

This chapter gives a list of Adam’s descendants up to the time of the flood (which destroyed the earth during Noah’s time). These names reflect those who stood for God in increasingly corrupt times (Genesis 6).

  1. Hebrews 11 mentions two of these individuals (Abel and Enoch) who pleased God by their faith (Hebrews 11:4-7). Each one refused to go his own way and defy God like Cain did. By the time of the flood, nearly everyone on earth was wicked. Only eight individuals were saved from this overwhelming disaster (Genesis 6:5, 11, 18; 7:1, 7; 1 Peter 3:20).
  2. There will always be some, at times only a few, who will worship God, remain faithful to Him, obey His Word and patiently trust His promises. They will be a minority (Matthew 7:13-14). Yet God recognizes their names as He did the people in this chapter. Today, if we feel we are standing alone in our faith and obedience to God, we must remember that we are never truly alone. There are still thousands throughout the earth who remain faithful to God and His cause (1 Kings 19:18).

All those devoted in faith to Jesus Christ must be devoted to one another as spiritual brothers and sisters in Christ (1 Thessalonians 4:9-10), with sincerity, sensitivity and kindness. We must be concerned for the welfare, needs and spiritual condition of others, empathizing with them and helping them through their sorrows and troubles. We must honor and respect one another, recognizing the good qualities in other Christians. In this way, people who do not know Christ will notice and be drawn to His love, which they see reflected in us (John 13:34-34).

YOU ARE GODS? / JOHN 10:34

Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?

YOU ARE GODS? / JOHN 10:34

Jesus is not teaching that His followers are to consider themselves gods. On the contrary, those who declare themselves to be gods – or who live like they are their own gods – will fall under God’s severe judgment (Jeremiah 10:11).

  1. Jesus was quoting from Psalms 82:6 in reference to the judges (other leaders and rulers) who were appointed by God for specific tasks (Exodus 22:8; Deuteronomy 1:17; 2 Chronicles 19:6 where God gives His leaders and judges authority to carry out responsibilities on His behalf). How much more should Jesus be recognized as God, since He was sent by the Gather to fulfill His highest mission of spiritual justice and salvation.
  2. In this passage, Jesus uses the phrase “you are ‘gods’” in speaking to corrupt rulers who were biased toward ungodly people and were even cruel to children (Psalms 82:1-4). These rulers, who acted as if they were gods, would eventually suffer judgment and die (Psalms 82:7; 82:6).
  3. To declare oneself a god is the ultimate sin of the antichrist (2 Thessalonians 2:4, 11).

KNOWING GOOD AND EVIL / GENESIS 3:22

Adam and Eve had attempted to act and think on an equal with God. They tried to set their own standards for life (Genesis 3:5). To some extent, they did become independent of God and were able to decide what was good or evil.

  1. Among humanity that does not know and trust in God, human judgment that is farm from what God intended often decides what is good or evil. This was never God’s will because He intended for us to know only good as we depended on Him and His Word.

All who accept Christ’s forgiveness and confess Him as Lord, the loving Leader and authority of their lives, return to God’s original purpose for their lives. They rely on God’s Word to determine what is good, right and true. A moral compass is restored.

NOT INHERIT THE KINDOM OF GOD /GALATIANS 5:21

Although Paul maintains that it is impossible to earn a right relationship with God and eternal life in heaven by keeping the law or by following religious routines (Galatians 2:16; 5:4), he does teach that it is possible to shut oneself out of the kingdom by engaging in evil behaviors (1 Corinthians 6:9; Matthew 25:41; Matthew 25:40-46; Ephesians 5:7-11).

GOD SAID LET US – LET US MAKE MAN / GENESIS 1:26

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

GOD SAID LET US – LET US MAKE MAN / GENESIS 1:26

The use of the word “us” (plural) suggests that God has a certain plurality, or multi-faceted nature (Psalms 2:7; Isaiah 48:16). This seems to be an early reference to the trinity, or the existence of God in three distinct but interrelated and unified Persons. The tri-unity (“three-in-One” nature) of God does not become clear, however, until the New Testament (Matthew 3:17; Mark 1:11).

LET US MAKE MAN

In Genesis 1:26-28 we read about the creation of human beings. More specific details about their creation and environment are found in Genesis 2:4-25. These two accounts work together to teach several things:

  1. Both man and woman are God’s special creation, not products of evolution (Genesis 1:27; Matthew 19:4; Mark 10:6).
  2. Man and woman were both created in God’s “image” and “likeness,” which means they could respond to a unique personal relationship with God that reflected His love and character. Each person was created to know and obey God willingly (Genesis 2:15-17). (a) They possessed a moral likeness to God as sinless and holy creations, with wise minds, loving hearts and the desire to do right (Ephesians 4:24). Their personal relationship with God involved moral obedience (Genesis 2:16-17) and intimate spiritual union. When Adam and Eve sinned, that moral likeness to God was corrupted, or made impure (Genesis 6:5). God renews that original moral likeness in those who turn from their own sinful ways and trust Him to lead their lives (Ephesians 4:22-24; Colossians 3:10). God provided this opportunity through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus willingly gave His perfect life through death to pay the penalty for our rebellion against God (1 Peter 3:18). (b) Adam and Eve possessed a natural likeness to God. They were created as personal beings with spirit, mind, emotions, self-awareness and power of choice (Genesis 2:19-20; 3:6-7; 9:6). (c) Man, and woman’s physical characteristics also reflect God’s image in a way that is not true of animals. God gave humans the same form in which He would visibly appear to them (Genesis 18:1-2). This is the form in which His Son, Jesus, came to earth (Luke 1:35; Philippians 2:7; Hebrews 10:5).
  3. Being made in God’s image does not mean that humans are divine beings (like “gods”). They have been created on a lower level than God and are dependent on Him (Psalms 8:5).
  4. All human life has continued through God’s first created man (Adam) and woman (Eve) (Genesis 3:20; Romans 5:12)
