Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

YOUR ENEMY THE DEVIL / 1 PETER 5:8

When the first humans chose to defy God, they became slaves to the sin they had brought into the world. As a result, they gave up the authority over creation that God had originally delegated to them (Genesis 1:26-30; Genesis 2:15; Genesis 2:19-20). Satan then rose up and seized that control over the earth (John 12:31; John 14:30; 16:11) and began to dominate the world with his evil purposes (1 John 5:19). He now patrols the earth as commander of a host of evil spirits through whom he enslaves and keeps captive those who do not have a personal relationship with Christ (Ephesians 2:1-2). Only Christ’s true and faithful followers have been rescued and liberated from Satan’s power. Yet, like a ferocious beast, he remains a threat to believers (Psalms 22:13; Ezekiel 22:25) and seeks to ruin and destroy them, especially through experiences of suffering (1 Peter 5:8-10). He will spiritually destroy anyone who abandons God’s protection. But through our faith in Christ’s sacrifice for us (Revelation 12:11), our spiritual warfare by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 6:11-18) and our prayers to God (Matthew 6:13), we are fully equipped to defeat Satan’s schemes (Ephesians 6:11), to resist him and to stand firm in the faith (1 Peter 5:9). Believers must never forget that “the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).

The fact that God is deeply concerned for the troubles of every one of His children is a truth emphasized throughout His Word (Psalms 27:10; 37:5; 40:17; 55:22; Matthew 6:25-34; 10:29-31; 11:28-30; Philippians 4:6). In a very real sense, worry is the opposite of faith. It could also be said that worry is taking responsibility for something God never meant for us to handle, or attempting to handle a situation in a way that is different from what He desires – without depending on Him and following His guidance. We must continually make a decision to turn all our fears, anxieties and concerns over to God and trust His way and time in handling them (Psalms 55:22; Luke 12:11-12).

CLOTHE YOURSELVES WITH HUMILITY / 1 PETER 5:5

(KJV) 1 Peter 5:5

ikewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

CLOTHE YOURSELVES WITH HUMILITY / 1 PETER 5:5

Humility must be the mark and distinguishing characteristic of all God’s people. It means an absence of selfish pride, a consciousness of one’s weaknesses and the earnest ability to give God and others the credit for what is achieved or accomplished (Matthew 11:29; Philippians 2:3; Philippians 2:5; Colossians 3:12). The word “clothe” (Greek egkomboomai) means to attach a piece of clothing to oneself. In New Testament times, slaves fastened a white piece of cloth or apron over their clothing so that others would know that they were slaves. Peter challenges us to tie the cloth of humility onto ourselves in order 

  1. To be identified as believers and servants of Christ.
  2. To humbly receive God’s grace and help (1 Peter 5:5-7). Peter may have had in mind Jesus’ action of tying on a towel and washing the disciples’ feet (John 13:1-5).

BE SHEPHERDS – NOT GREEDY FOR MONEY … NOT LORDING IT OVER / 1 PETER 5:2

Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;

BE SHEPHERDS – NOT GREEDY FOR MONEY … NOT LORDING IT OVER / 1 PETER 5:2

BE SHEPHERDS

Elders (overseers or pastors) have the responsibility of leading and caring for those in the church. This includes discipling them (training them in the practical disciplines of following Christ and consistently learning from His Word), feeding them with God’s Word and protecting them.

NOT GREEDY FOR MONEY … NOT LORDING IT OVER

Church leaders must beware of two dangerous sins:

  1. The desire for money (1 Timothy 3:3, 8; Titus 1:7). The New Testament standard for those who oversee God’s work is to receive adequate support from the church (Luke 10:7; 1 Corinthians 9:14; 1 Timothy 5:17) and to be content with basic and necessary provisions for themselves and their families. No minister ought to make himself or herself rich from God’s work. Those who fall victim to this temptation open themselves up to sins of greed, compromise and theft. For the sake of money, they compromise the standards and teaching of God’s Word and the principles of His kingdom. 
  2. The desire for power. Those greedy for power are likely to dominate those whom they are to serve by excessively using their authority. Instead, the pastor must lead the church by being an example of devotion to Christ, humble service, integrity, faithfulness to truth, commitment to prayer and love for God’s Word.

And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

THE UNGODLY AND THE SINNER / 1 PETER 4:18

“Ungodly” (Greek asebes) originally meant “not reverent”; it later came to mean “having an attitude of disrespect and contempt toward God” (Jude 1:4, where the same Greek word is used). “Sinner” (Greek hamartolos) comes from a word meaning to miss the mark, either by falling short or by going to one side or the other of the goal (Romans 3:23; Romans 6:2; Isaiah 53:6).

JUDGMENT TO BEGIN WITH THE FAMILY OF GOD / 1 PETER 4:17

Christians must look inward to evaluate themselves – their devotion to God and His Word – before they attempt to make judgments about those who do not know Christ and naturally defy God. This principle applies as well to individual believers, who must always seek to settle their own issues with God and remove sin from their own lives before proposing to help others within the church solve their problems (Matthew 7:3-5; Luke 6:41-42). This practice of self-examination, humility and turning from any sin within the church is necessary if the church is to see any degree of spiritual revival among believers and any significant influence for Christ in their communities (2 Chronicles 7:14).

It is a principle within God’s kingdom that suffering for Christ’s cause will increase the depth and strength of the believer’s joy in serving the Lord (Matthew 5:10-12; Acts 5:41; 16:25; Romans 5:3; Colossians 1:24; Hebrews 10:34). For this reason, we should not fear the prospect of suffering for Christ, nor should we envy those who seem to suffer little or not at all for the Lord.

Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:

THE PAINFUL TRIAL / 1 PETER 4:12

A focus of New Testament teaching is that troubles and difficulties are inevitable for faithful followers of Christ in an ungodly world controlled by Satan and opposed to Christ’s message. Those who are boldly devoted to Jesus Christ, who live by the guidance of the Holy Spirit and who love the truth of God’s Word will experience trouble and sorrow. In fact, suffering for the truth and cause of Christ is evidence of genuine devotion to Him (Matthew 5:10-12; Acts 14:22; Romans 8:17-18; 2 Timothy 2:12). Problems in your life may actually be a sign that God is pleased and confident of your faithfulness to Him. Tough times are characteristic of faithful spiritual warfare against sin, Satan and the ungodliness of the world (1 Peter 1:6-9; Ephesians 6:12). Through painful, faith-testing trials, God allows Christians to share in His suffering while He forms within them the quality of character He desires (Romans 5:3-5; 2 Corinthians 1:3-7; James 1:2-4). When you endure trials and remain faithful to Christ, you will be considered blessed, for “the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you” (1 Peter 4:14; 1 Peter 2:21).

As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

EACH ONE SHOULD USE WHATEVER GIFT HE HAS RECEIVED / 1 PETER 4:10

God has given each of us specific interests, abilities and talents that He expects us to put to use in serving Him and others. Because of how God created you, there are things that no one else in the world can do quite like you can. These abilities are typically related to the interests and opportunities God gives you. Though some of our gifts might seem less important than others, they are all significant to God because they provide ways to contribute to His purposes (1 Corinthians 12:11-17). You must not keep your abilities to yourself. God wants to bless and encourage others through you. In a way, you do not just have a gift; you are a gift from God to others. God has planted seeds of ability in you, and it is your responsibility to depend on God to grow and develop your gifts so that others can benefit from the fruit God produces through you (Romans 12:4-8). In a sense, your God-given talents and abilities do not become fully developed gifts until you have given them back to Him by blessing and serving others.
