THOSE WHO SEE WILL BECOME BLIND / JOHN 9:39

Jesus’ coming and message would reveal people’s hearts and expose their motives (Hebrews 4:12). In this way, He would bring division (Luke 12:49-51), separating those who accept Him from those who do not. People who are humble enough to admit their need for Christ can find new life and healing through faith in Him. But people who proudly think that they can know and experience real life apart from Christ are actually choosing to remain spiritually blind.

They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

THEY THREW HIM OUT / JOHN 9:34

One of the best things that happened to the man born blind was that he was officially excluded from his former religion. If he had remained part of the synagogue (a group of followers of Judaism who worshiped together), he could have easily drifted back to the traditional beliefs that kept many people from accepting Christ and His message of truth, spiritual salvation and a personal relationship with God. Today the same thing can happen to those who are in spiritually lifeless churches or unbiblical religious organizations. If they remain in that church or situation, they may lose their hunger for true Christianity; based on solid Bible teaching. As a result, they would likely return to their old, spiritually harmful ways. In order to grow closer to Christ, we must separate ourselves from things that seem to be spiritual but are really not in agreement with God and His Word (John 9:35-38).

Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

WORK OF GOD MIGHT BE DISPLAYED / JOHN 9:3

The disciples have some incorrect ideas about the cause of afflictions, and Jesus corrects them. They think that every serious illness or difficulty is the result of some sin or offense against God. At times, sickness and suffering can result from a serious sin (John 5:14) or foolish choices, but not always. Sometimes God allows suffering (which naturally affects everyone in our God-defying world) because He has a greater purpose that is not always understood at first. Through difficulties, God is able to show His mercy, love and power. Suffering also may cause people to turn to Christ for help and spiritual salvation. Often in the world the innocent suffer when the wicked do not (Psalms 73:1-14).

ISRAEL OF GOD / GALATIANS 6:16

This term refers to all God’s people under the new covenant (God’s plan of spiritual salvation and a renewed relationship with people through the life and sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ). This includes both Jews and Gentiles (people of all nations who are not Israelite or Jewish) who are true followers of Christ. All people who through faith in “the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” are crucified to the world (Galatians 6:14) and have become a “new creation” (Galatians 6:15) are part of the true “Israel of God” (Romans 2:28-29; 9:7-8; Ephesians 2:14-22; Philippians 3:3; 1 Peter 2:9).

THE WORLD HAS BEEN CRUCIFIED TO ME / GALATIANS 6:14

(KJV) Galatians 6:14

But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

THE WORLD HAS BEEN CRUCIFIED TO ME / GALATIANS 6:14

Though the cross is a popular symbol in the world, most people are not truly willing to identify with the suffering or the sacrifice of the Savior that it represents. The cross of Christ, representing the horrible death that Jesus suffered for our eternal salvation (Matthew 27:35; Mark 8:34), has actually set a dividing line between true Christians and the rest of the world. Identifying with Christ sets us apart from “the world” that is offended by and opposed to God, His purposes and His standard of truth (Galatians 4:3; 1 Corinthians 2:12; 3:19; 1 John 2:15-17).

  1. For those who boldly identify with Christ – who are willing to share in His sufferings (Romans 8:17; 2 Corinthians 1:7) and who base their lives on the truth of His message – the world loses its appeal. They no longer love and follow the world’s accepted standards, values, opinion, honors and lifestyles. 
  2. For us to be “crucified with Christ” (Galatians 2:20) includes being crucified to the world (dying to its desires, being freed from its control, becoming unresponsive to its influences). There is no sharing in the salvation and glory of Christ’s cross without turning our backs on all the earthly pleasures that draw our hearts away from Him, His presence and His purposes (Mark 8:34).

GOD CANNOT BE MOCKED / GALATIANS 6:7

Those who claim to be a part of the family of God (to be born again, John 3:3-7) and filled with His Spirit but show the fruit of ungodliness (the sinful nature, Galatians 5:19-21), are fooling themselves. They are showing disrespect for God. We must not allow ourselves to be deceived in this way. God’s Word is very clear about this fact: such persons will not receive “eternal life.” Instead, their reward will be “destruction” (Galatians 6:8) and “death” (Romans 6:20-23; 1 Corinthians 6:9).

SHARE ALL GOOD THINGS / GALATIANS 6:6-10

It is our spiritual duty to help provide financial and material support for those from whom we receive ministry and instruction (1 Corinthians 9:14; 1 Timothy 5:18). Those who are worthy of support include faithful pastors, workers, teachers, evangelists and missionaries (1 Corinthians 9:14; 3 John 1:6-8). To refuse to give support, if the means and opportunity are available, is to “sow” (plant) selfishness and “reap” (harvest) destruction (Galatians 6:7-9). To give to those who serve in the ministry of the Word is a part of doing good “to those who belong to the family of believers” (Galatians 6:10). If we are faithful in our support of ministry and in our opportunities to serve and do good to others for the sake of Christ, “at the proper time we will reap” (Galatians 6:9) both reward (Matthew 10:41-42) and eternal life (Galatians 6:8).

To carry each other’s burdens (concerns, problems, difficult responsibilities) includes helping people in times of sickness, sorrow and financial stress. It involves praying earnestly for people as well as helping to meet their needs in tangible, practical ways. Paul may have in mind the support of missionaries and teachers (Galatians 6:6; Romans 15:1; 1 Corinthians 9:14). To carry another’s burden is a godly quality (Psalms 55:22; 1 Peter 5:7).

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

RESTORE HIM GENTLY / GALATIANS 6:1

The word “restore” (Greek katartizo) is used in the New Testament for mending fishing nets (Matthew 4:21), but in reference to people it means developing and perfecting human character (2 Corinthians 13:11). With this in mind, Christians must help wayward believers to mend and heal spiritually by guiding them in their desire and efforts to turn from their own defiant ways, to surrender to Christ’s control and to renew their full devotion to Jesus Christ. These are the same words that God used to introduce Himself to Moses in Exodus 3:14. Notice that Jesus did not say “I was” but “I am,” expressing His eternal nature, His limitless capabilities and His oneness with God the Father.
