And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.

A THIRD / REVELATION 8:12

In all cases where “a third” is mentioned (16 times in Revelation 8:7-12; 9:15, 18; 12:4; 14:9), it is not necessarily meant to portray an exact third, for in some cases this would total more than a whole. Instead, this fraction suggests that rather than complete devastation, God has shown restraint in not yet destroying the whole. In other words, these punishments announced by the trumpet are not yet final or complete.

WORMWOOD / REVELATION 8:10-11

 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; 11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

WORMWOOD / REVELATION 8:10-11

“Wormwood” is a bitter plant, representing God’s judgment and human sorrow (Deuteronomy 29:18; Proverbs 5:4; Jeremiah 9:15; Amos 5:7).

HAIL AND FIRE MIXED WITH BLOOD / REVELATION 8:7

The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

HAIL AND FIRE MIXED WITH BLOOD / REVELATION 8:7

The first four trumpet judgments begin. Like the seals, the first four trumpets are grouped together and will be followed by two that are distinct, and then by a seventh, which will announce the final series of seven (Revelation 11:15; 15:1).  The mention of blood is reminiscent of Joel’s prophecy (Joel 2:31; Acts 2:19). The hail and fire are like the seventh plague God brought on Egypt through Moses (Exodus 19:13-35), only this trumpet judgment is far more serious. 

  1. One-third of the earth’s vegetation is destroyed by fire and hail; one-third of the sea and rivers are polluted; the visible heavens, sun, moon and stars are darkened for a third part of both day and night (Revelation 8:7-13).
  2. The judgments affect humans also, far many are killed (Revelation 8:11). The judgment is limited to one-third of the world because the purpose of the judgment is, in part, to warn people and turn them to God (Revelation 9:20-21).

PRAYERS OF ALL THE SAINTS / REVELATION 8:3

And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.

PRAYERS OF ALL THE SAINTS / REVELATION 8:3

The repeated mentioning of the prayers of the saints (God’s “holy ones”; Revelation 5:8; Revelation 8:3-4) indicates that the prayers of God’s people are extremely important in enacting God’s purposes and plan for the destruction of evil and the establishment of true justice and righteousness on the earth (Revelation 5:8). Some interpreters consider the silence in heaven at the opening of the seventh seal as a time of God giving priority to the prayers of His people. These prayers are about to have a direct effect on what happens on the earth (Revelation 8:5).

  1. John mentions the prayers of all the saints, which seems to indicate that the prayers of those enduring the tribulation on earth are joined by the intercession (prayer for others’ needs and situations) of those in heaven (Revelation 6:9; Revelation 6:10; Revelation 6:11). The saints in heaven are vitally concerned about the events on earth. This passage may also imply the prayers of God’s people of all time who have prayed for His purposes and justice to be carried out. 
  2. Note that God, in some sense, stores up our prayers. Although the Lord may not answer all our prayers immediately, He does not throw them aside but keeps them for fulfillment at the proper time. 
  3. If God answers His people’s prayers for His justice (Revelation 6:10), how much more will He answer our prayers for His mercy to be revealed to those who do not yet know Christ. He desires, above all ese, that they would receive His forgiveness and entrust their lives to Him so that they too can escape the judgment to come. In fact, He is patiently waiting even now, allowing more time for people to turn to Him (2 Peter 3:9). Just as the prayers of God’s people will have a direct effect regarding end-time judgments, they also have a direct effect on those for whom we pray to be saved before those times arrive.

TRUMPETS / REVELATION 8:2

And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets.

TRUMPETS / REVELATION 8:2

These trumpets are probably like the straight silver trumpets used in the Old Testament tabernacle (Numbers 10:2) and later in the temple (2 Chronicles 5:12). Trumpets were a sign of kingly authority and God’s activity. Trumpets served to announce important events, to give signals in times of war (Numbers 10:1-10; 31:6; Hosea 5:8) and to sound an alarm (Joel 2:1). The seven trumpets announce a series of end-time plagues more severe than what was revealed by the previous breaking of the seals, but not as devastating as what will take place when the bowls of God’s judgment are poured out (Revelation 16).

And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.

THE SEVENTH SEAL / SILENCE IN HEAVEN / REVELATION 8:1

THE SEVENTH SEAL

The opening of the seventh seal starts the seven trumpets of judgment, meaning that the trumpet judgments are the seventh seal. The trumpet judgments are partial judgments (Revelation 8-9; 11:15-19), while the judgments of the seven bowls (Revelation 16) are more complete and severe. The seventh trumpet judgment will announce the seven bowls of judgment (Revelation 16:1-21). Revelation 6:1, 12, comments on how these series of descriptions of God’s judgments relate and tie together. The silence in heaven is due, in part, to the horror of the coming judgments against sin (Romans 6:2, defining “sin”).

SILENCE IN HEAVEN

Suddenly, all of the music, singing and shouts of praise around God’s throne stop. The silence is a sort of dramatic pause that captures the attention of all of heaven. At this point, there seems to be a completely overwhelming sense of the seriousness of what is about to take place – the Lord is about to directly take a divine step into human history and unleash His judgment on the earth. Up to now, the primary attention of John’s vision has been directed toward God’s throne and the person and events surrounding it. But with the breaking of the seventh seal, the scroll can be unrolled and its contents fully revealed (Revelation 5:1). From this point on, John’s attention will turn to earth and the horrors of judgment about to overtake it.

HE STRUCK THE WATER / EXODUS 7:20

And Moses and Aaron did so, as the Lord commanded; and he lifted up the rod, and smote the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh, and in the sight of his servants; and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood.

HE STRUCK THE WATER / EXODUS 7:20

The ten miraculous plagues against Egypt (Exodus 7:20; 8:2, 16, 21; 9:3, 9, 18; 10:4, 21; 11:5) had several purposes.

  1. They were signs to show Egypt, as well as Israel, that the Lord is God above all gods and human beings (Exodus 7:5; 9:14-15; 10:2; 15:11) and to make God known “in all the earth” (Exodus 9:16).
  2. They were performed to strengthen Israel’s faith and to convince them of God’s power, love and ultimate authority over everything. From this point on, Israel was to tell their children about these events so that the following generations would be inspired to know and follow God (Exodus 6:7; Exodus 10:2; 12:42). 
  3. They demonstrated God’s power over Egypt’s gods and all other evil powers in order to help and protect His people (Exodus 12:12).
  4. They were God’s judgments on Egypt to persuade Pharaoh to let God’s people go (Exodus 8:2, 21; 11:1; 12:31-33; Numbers 33:4).

IT BECAME A SNAKE / EXODUS 7:12

  1. The magicians’ staffs also turned into snakes but through demonic power. The hearts and minds of the Egyptians were turned strongly toward magic, the supernatural and mysterious (occultism), the work of evil spirits (spiritism) and sorcery (the work of wizards or witches) as part of their religion. But when Aaron’s staff, or walking stick, swallowed their staffs, the God of Israel was showing that His power was greater than the power of Egypt’s gods. 
  2. In the final days before Christ’s return, Satan will display miracles through false ministers within the church and through the antichrist (2 Timothy 3:8). Christians must not assume that the miracles they see are always evidence of the true God at work (Revelation 16:14; Revelation 19:20).

I WILL HARDEN PHARAOH’S HEART / EXODUS 7:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 7:3-4

And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt.

I WILL HARDEN PHARAOH’S HEART / EXODUS 7:3

God did not force Pharaoh to resist Him. Pharaoh’s heart was already hard toward God. So when God confronted the stubborn, rebellious attitude in his heart, Pharaoh resisted even more. This additional hardening was a punishment for Pharaoh’s determined rebellion and opposition toward God (Exodus 5:2; 7:13-14, 22; 8:15, 19, 32; 9:7). 

  1. God was demonstrating a principle that applies to all who resist Him and refuse to turn from their own stubborn way. There comes a point where God finally turns people over to the full effects and consequences of their sinful desires (Romans 1:24) and actually hardens their hearts even more (Romans 9:18). People in this dangerous condition are often spiritually blinded to God’s love and the truth of His Word (2 Thessalonians 2:10). God often allows this so that a person will come to a point of hopelessness and finally turn to God for help and salvation (1 Corinthians 5:5).
  2. Notice how the judgments of the early plagues softened Pharaoh’s heart a little. But when God removed each plague, Pharaoh’s heart hardened again. This shows that Pharaoh resisted God and hardened his own heart whenever God showed mercy (Exodus 8:8-15).

This phrase does not mean that God determined ahead of time who will be spiritually saved and who will be condemned. The phrase has to do with what God has determined will happen to those who willingly accept His salvation and follow Him, as well as what will finally happen to those who willfully refuse to accept and follow Him.
