And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

The Scriptures (God’s written Word, both Old Testament and New Testament) point to and declare the fact that Jesus is God. This is the foundation of the Christian faith and is vitally important for our spiritual salvation. Without Christ being God and maintaining a perfect life as a man, He could not have provided the perfect and permanent atonement (“sin-covering” sacrifice) for the sins of the world. The deity (God-nature) of Jesus Christ is shown by the following:

1. God’s Word gives Jesus names and titles reserved only for God: (a) God (John 20:28; Isaiah 9:6; Romans 9:5; Titus 2:13; Hebrews 1:8); (b) the Son of God (John 5:25; Matthew 16:16-17; 8:29; 27:40, 43; Mark 14:61-62; Luke 22:70); (c)the First and the Last (Revelation 1:17; 2:8; 22:13); (d) the Alpha and the Omega (Revelation 1:8; Revelation 22:11-13); (e) the Beginning and the End (Revelation 22:13). (f) the Holy One (Hosea 11:9; Acts 3:14); (g) the Lord (Luke 2:11; Acts 4:33; 9:17; 16:31); (h) Lord of all and Lord of glory (Psalms 24:8-10; Acts 10:36; 1 Corinthians 2:8).
2. Christ receives worship as God (John 5:23; 13:13; 20:28; Matthew 14:33; Luke 5:8), and prayers are addressed to Him (Acts 7:59; 1 Corinthians 1:2; 2 Corinthians 12:8-9).
3. Christ is given credit for activities and roles belonging only to God: (a) creator of the universe (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16; Hebrews 1:8, 10; Revelation 3:14); (b) sustainer of all things (Colossians 1:17; Hebrews 1:13); (c)forgiver of sins (Mark 2:5, 10; Luke 7:48-50); (d) giver of resurrection life (John 5:28-29; 6:39-44); (e) judge of all people (John 5:21-23; Matthew 25:31-46; Acts 17:31; 2 Timothy 4:1); (f) giver of salvation (John 5:24-26; 6:47; 10:28; 17:2).
4. The New Testament reveals how many Old Testament statements about the Lord God contain prophetic truths about Christ. Compare Psalms 23:1 with John 10:11; Psalms 102:24-27 with Hebrews 1:10-12; Isaiah 8:13-14 with 1 Peter 2:7-8; Jeremiah 17:10 with Revelation 2:23; Ezekiel 34:11-12 with Luke 19:10.
5. The name of Jesus Christ is associated with that of God the Father (John 14:1-4; John 14:23; Matthew 28:19; Romans 1:7; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Colossians 2:2; 1 Thessalonians 3:11; James 1:1; Revelation 5:13; 7:10).
6. Christ’s sinlessness and holiness (His complete purity, perfection, spiritual wholeness and separation from all evil) testify to His divinity – His qualities associated with being the true God (Luke 1:35; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 4:15).
7. Christ was proven and declared to be the Son of God by His miraculous resurrection and complete triumph over death (Romans 1:4; 2 Timothy 1:10).

These conclusive proofs that Christ is God mean that believers must act and respond toward Christ in exactly the same way they act toward God the Father. They must believe in Him, worship Him, pray to Him, serve Him and love Him (John 1:1; Mark 1:11).
