The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach. Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:

MY FORMER BOOK / ACTS 1:1-2

In Luke’s Gospel (his written narrative of the “good news” and true story of Jesus Christ), we have the account of “all that Jesus began to do and to teach.” This statement suggests that Jesus continues to work and teach; He does so through His followers (John 14:12). In the book of Acts, we have the continuing story of how Jesus’ followers – in the same power of the Holy Spirit that characterized Jesus’ life (Luke 4:1-2; Luke 4:14) – spread the same message, worked the same kind of miracles and lived the same kind of life (Acts 3:6-7; 4:1-2, 18). The major theme of the book of Acts is how the Holy Spirit continued to reproduce the life and work of Jesus through the church (the worldwide community of all His true followers working together). The book could well be called “The Acts of the Holy Spirit.” Observe the following points concerning the Holy Spirit’s inspired record in the book of Acts:

  1. All of God’s written Word, including the historical accounts in Acts, is accurate, relevant and beneficial for teaching and studying about God and His relationship to people and the world. This is confirmed by two facts: (a) the Bibles’s declaration that “all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16); (b) Paul’s statement that the Old Testament historical accounts have specific teaching and instructional purposes (1 Corinthians 10:11). He maintains that these stories are given as examples with practical and spiritual relevance for Christ’s followers to this day (Romans 15:4). What is true for historical accounts in the Old Testament is certainly true for the accounts in Acts of the New Testament church and its leaders.
  2. Luke’s inspired record of the history of the church in its beginning stages provides: (a) a reliable pattern of the Holy Spirit’s activity, which becomes the model during the entire church age (until Christ returns to take all of His true followers in the church out of the world), (b) information for developing a foundation of faith and accurate teaching about the Holy Spirit and (c) revelation about how the Spirit’s work must relate to the lives of Christians. Two specific elements in this book that should be considered normal in the lives of individual Christians and the church as a body of believers are (i) the baptism in (or filling with) the Holy Spirit, which is God’s promise for all followers of Christ (Acts 2:39; Acts 1:5; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:4; Acts 4:8; Acts 4:31; Acts 8:15-16; Acts 8:17; Acts 10:44-46; Acts 10:46; Acts 13:9; Acts 13:52; Acts 15:8; 19:1-6 and (ii) the Spirit’s various activities that set the standards of character, boldness and power that God still desires for His people in the church.
