MOUTH … HEART BE PLEASING IN YOUR SIGHT – O LORD MY ROCK AND MY REDEEMER / PSALMS 19:14

(KJV) Psalms 19:14

Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.

The proper response to God’s work of spiritual salvation in our lives is a constant prayer that God will keep our hearts, words and lives pleasing to Him and free from sin. Such prayer is a vital part of an ongoing personal relationship with God. Both what we think about and what we actually speak should be pleasing to God.

The word translated “rock” (Hebrew tsur) refers to a great solid rock or large rock cliff. In the limestone country of Israel, such rocks provide shade and protection and were landmarks to help people find their way. Such rocks would include caves where people could take refuge, as David did in 1 Samuel 23:24-25. But David recognized the Lord as his true spiritual Rock (2 Samuel 22:2-3; Psalms 28:1). God provided water out of the rock in Horeb as the Israelites were in the desert (Exodus 17:6; Psalms 78:20; 105:41), but the New Testament says that they really “drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:4). In addition to being a refuge and source, God is solid, dependable, constant and trustworthy. The reference to God as Redeemer is David’s way of saying that he looked to God as the One who saves his life from destruction. He rejoices that God rescues him from trouble and harm, liberates his soul from spiritual oppression and restores his relationship with God following spiritual failures.
