The Holy Spirit lives within a true child of God in order to lead him or her to think, speak and act according to the principles, standards, and examples of God’s Word.

1. He leads mainly by inner promptings (urges, motivations, and inspirations within one’s spirit) that are aimed at guiding the Christian in daily life. These inner promptings

• Help us follow and accomplish God’s purposes and overcome the sinful nature (Romans 8:13; Philippians 2:13; Titus 2:11-12).
• Are always in agreement with God’s written Word (1 Corinthians 2:11-12; 2 Peter 1:20-21).
• Are present to give direction in life (Luke 4:1; Acts 10:19-20; 16:6-7).
• Are opposed to sinful desires (Galatians 5:17-18; 1 Peter 2:11).
• Are concerned with the guilt of sin, Christ’s standard of right and wrong and God’s judgment against evil (John 16:8-11).
• Encourage believers to remain devoted to Christ and warn them not to fall away from personal faith in Him (Romans 8:13; Hebrews 3:7-14).
• Become weaker the longer they are resisted and disobeyed (Romans 1:28; Ephesians 4:17-19, 30-31; 1 Thessalonians 5:19).
• Result in spiritual death when rejected (Romans 8:6, 13).
• Result in spiritual life and peace when obeyed (Romans 8:6, 10-11, 13; Galatians 5:22-23).

1. The Spirit’s promptings come by

• Reading God’s Word (John 14:26; 15:7, 26; 16:13; 2 Timothy 3:16-17).
• Praying passionately and consistently (Romans 8:26; Acts 13:2-3; Acts 13:2).
• Listening to godly preaching and teaching (2 Timothy 4:1-2; 2 Timothy 4:2; Hebrews 13:7, 17).
• Exercising the gifts of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:7-10; 14:6).
• Listening to the advice of Christian parents and trustworthy spiritual leaders (Ephesians 6:1; Colossians 3:20).
