START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 3:15

If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

HE WILL SUFFER LOSS

All of God’s people must be faithful and careful in their efforts to serve Christ and fulfill His purposes for their lives (1 Corinthians 3:10). This is especially so when handling God’s Word. That is because one day the quality of each person’s service will be put to the test, and their “work will be shown for what it is” (1 Corinthians 3:13). The Bible assures us that all who have accepted God’s forgiveness and have a personal relationship with Christ are free from God’s condemning judgment (eternal punishment and separation from God, John 5:24; Romans 8:1; Hebrews 10:14-17). However, there is still a future judgment for God’s people (1 John 4:17) based on the degree of their faithfulness to God and the opportunities given to them during their life on earth (1 Corinthians 3:10; 4:2-5; 2 Corinthians 5:10). In that judgment, there is the possibility that a believer, although spiritually saved, may experience great loss (Greek zemioo, meaning “to suffer loss or damage”).

The careless Christian is in danger of experiencing loss or damage through:

  1. A feeling of shame at Christ’s coming (2 Timothy 2:15; 1 John 2:28).
  2. Loss of his or her life’s work for God (1 Corinthians 3:12-15).
  3. Loss of glory and honor from God (Romans 2:7).
  4. Loss of opportunity for service and authority in heaven (Matthew 25:14-30).
  5. A low position in heaven (Matthew 5:19; Matthew 19:30).
  6. Loss of rewards (1 Corinthians 3:14-15).
  7. Repayment for the wrong done to others (Colossians 3:24-25). These passages should impress on us the need for complete dedication and self-sacrificing service to our Lord. (Romans 12:1-2; Philippians 2:12; Philippians 4:3).

BUT ONLY AS ONE ESCAPING THROUGH THE FLAMES

“Escaping through the flames” is probably an expression meaning “by a narrow escape” or “barely saved.” God will evaluate for each person the quality of his or her life, service, influence, teaching and work for His kingdom (1 Corinthians 3:13) – especially of each minister. If a person’s work is judged as lacking or unworthy, he or she will lose some degree of reward, yet will still be saved and enter heaven. Notice that this passage does not teach a doctrine of purgatory (the belief that there is a place where souls remain until amends have been made for their sins and they can enter heaven). Paul is speaking of a judgment of works rather than the cleansing of a person from sins that would lead him or her to eternal punishment and separation from God.
