(KJV) Zechariah 1:4
Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith the Lord.

God reminds the people of how He had given their ancestors the same challenge through the earlier prophets, but they had not listened.
- Because they had refused to give up their own evil ways, the forefathers missed their opportunities to respond positively to God. As a result, they suffered the results of their sin. The warnings and curses recorded in Deuteronomy 28 were fulfilled.
- In the same way, if we refuse to avoid the sinful pleasures that are common in the world and allow them to interfere with our relationship with God, we too will miss His plan for our lives and lose the highest blessings He has planned for us.
