(KJV) Psalms 18:1-50

I LOVE YOU O LORD / PSALMS 18:1-50

This psalm is also recorded in 2 Samuel 22 with a few differences. It was probably written early in King David’s reign (2 Samuel 8:14), before he committed the devastating sin of adultery and suffered the results for the rest of his life (2 Samuel 12:1-14). The psalm may point prophetically to Christ since Paul quotes Psalms 18:49 to describe a time when all nations will praise the name of God because of what Jesus has done (Romans 15:9).

THE APPLE OF YOUR EYE / PSALMS 17:8-9

(KJV) Psalms 17:8-9

Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings, 9 From the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who compass me about.

THE APPLE OF YOUR EYE / PSALMS 17:8-9

The psalmist uses two word pictures to teach about God’s love and care for His faithful people. 

  1. The “apple” of the eye is the pupil of the eye and is a Hebrew metaphor (figure of speech, symbol, comparison) for something that is cherished and of great value. 
  2. “The shadow of your wings” is a metaphor based on the picture of a hen protecting her young under her wings. It expresses God’s loving care and provision (Psalms 36:7; 57:1; 61:4; 63:7). Christ used this symbol to express His love for Israel. (Matthew 23:37). Praying for God’s strong arm of protection and support is the privilege of every believer (Deuteronomy 32:10; Proverbs 7:2; Zechariah 2:8).

Hear the right, O Lord, attend unto my cry, give ear unto my prayer, that goeth not out of feigned lips.

HEAR O LORD / PSALMS 17:1

David’s cry to the Lord to hear his prayer is based on God’s mercy and also on David’s own faithful obedience to God (Psalms 17:1-5). God searched David’s heart and found that his efforts were right and true (1 John 3:19-21). David’s request to God on the basis of his own faithfulness teaches us that God has promised to hear the prayers of those who love and honor Him (John 15:7). Effective prayer requires a clear conscience and pure life (1 John 3:22).

NOT ABANDON ME TO THE GRAVE / PSALMS 16:9-10

(KJV) Psalms 16:9-10

Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. 10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

NOT ABANDON ME TO THE GRAVE / PSALMS 16:9-10

A personal relationship with God gives people the confidence of a future life with God and the certainty that He will not abandon them in death (Hebrew Sheol; Psalms 73:26). The apostles (pioneer leaders in the early church) Peter and Paul applied this verse to Christ and His resurrection (Acts 2:25-31; 13:34-37). 

  1. Sheol, found 66 times in the Old Testament, is translated 55 times as “the grave” and 6 times as “death.”
  2. In general, the Old Testament views Sheol as a place associated with some sort of punishment. (a) When Jacob indicated that he would go down to the grave (Sheol) because of the loss of his son, Joseph (Genesis 37:35), he felt he must be under God’s judgment. That is why he refused to be comforted. There is no evidence that he tried to make any other request to God until after he heard that Joseph was still alive. (b) David clearly indicated that the grave (Sheol) was the place where “the wicked” would go (Psalms 9:17). Isaiah said that the ungodly king Tiglath-Pileser of Assyria, when he died, would join the kings he conquered in that terrible place (Isaiah 14:9-10). (c) There are several passages that indicate the Israelites did not expect to go to Sheol when they died but would go where they could enjoy God’s presence. David anticipated that when he died, he would be living “in the house of the LORD forever” (Psalms 23:6). Another psalm writer believed that God would rescue his life from the grave (Sheol) and take him to heaven (Psalms 49:15; 73:14-15). And Solomon testified that the path of a wise, God-fearing person leads upward “to keep him from going down to the grave” (Proverbs 15:24).

God’s people should pursue and cherish above all else a more intimate relationship with the Lord. His continual presence at our right hand. His continual presence at our right hand (representing the position of honor, authority and strength) brings guidance (Psalms 16:7, 11), protection (Psalms 16:8), joy (Psalms 16:9), resurrection (Psalms 16:10) and eternal pleasures (Psalms 16:11).

The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.

ASSIGNED ME MY PRTION AND MY CUP / PSALMS 16:5

In this passage, David refers to the inheritance of “portions” God’s people received when they entered the promised land, both in fields (Numbers 16:14) and in God’s presence. The “cup” is a metaphor (figure of speech directly comparing two things to show how they are alike) that refers to the refreshing drink that would be offered to a guest as an act of kindness and hospitality. In this case, the Lord is both the “portion” and the “cup” (Psalms 73:26; Numbers 18:20; Deuteronomy 18:2). He is our inheritance, our source of blessing and the only means of continued happiness (John 14:23).

Apart from God, the psalmist sees no meaning in life and no personal happiness. Without God’s presence and blessing, nothing in this life is truly good and satisfying. The writer will have nothing to do with false gods or anything that takes priority over God (Psalms 16:4). His relationship with the true God means everything to him. Paul expressed this same truth when he said: “For to me, to live is Christ” (Philippians 1:21; Galatians 2:20).

WHO KEEPS HIS OATH EVEN WHEN IT HURTS / PSALMS 15:4

(KJV) Psalms 15:4

 In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the Lord. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.

WHO KEEPS HIS OATH EVEN WHEN IT HURTS / PSALMS 15:4

God puts the highest priority on personal integrity (character, honesty, honor, faithfulness) as it relates to keeping our promises and commitments – to God and to others (Deuteronomy 23:21-23). It is better not to make promises than to make and then break them. God is a person of His word, and He expects His followers to be people of their word. This was true in the Old Testament, and it is still true for New Testament believers. Few things give Christianity a bad reputation faster than those who claim to follow Christ but who have been known to lie and break their commitments. Some examples of how we break commitments include not paying our bills on time; not giving our best efforts at home, school or work; or not being honest in our relationships with others. We must follow through on our promises and commitments, even when they turn out to be more difficult than we expected.

(KJV) Psalms 15:1

Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?

WHO MAY DWELL IN YOUR SANCTURARY? PSALMS 15:1

This psalm answers the question: “What sort of person experiences a deep relationship with God and a strong sense of His presence?” It suggests that we lose a sense of His presence – or may even cause God to withdraw His presence from our lives – through ungodly behavior, dishonesty and deceit, slander or selfishness. For this reason, we should examine our actions daily, confess and turn from our sins, strive to live for God’s approval (2 Timothy 2:15) and realize that to lose touch with God is to lose everything (1 John 1:6-7; 2:3-6; 3:21-24).

THE FOOL / PSALMS 14:1-7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Psalms 14:1-7

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. 2 The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. 3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one. 4 Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the Lord. 5 There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous. 6 Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the Lord is his refuge. 7 Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! when the Lord bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

THE FOOL / PSALMS 14:1-7

The fool is a person who lives as if there is no God. Fools reveal their rebellion against God in two ways. 

  1. They reject God’s revelation in the sense that they do not believe what the Bible says about God. In fact, they ridicule and show open disrespect and rejection of the moral principles of God’s Word, relying on their own ideas to determine right from wrong (Psalms 14:1-3).
  2. They do not pursue any kind of a relationship with God, nor do they acknowledge Him or pray for His help.

This psalm describes the moral corruption of the wicked and teaches that the human race is by nature separated from and opposed to God (Ephesians 2:2-3). Paul quotes the first three verses of this psalm to support the truth that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23; 3:10-12).
