I NEVER KNEW YOU / MATTHEW 7:23

Christ makes it unmistakably clear that people may speak about Him and even be involved in powerful, supernatural activity, such as diving out demons and performing miracles, though in their hearts they have no genuine personal relationship with Christ. 

  1. Scripture teaches that what seems to be great preaching, strong belief, enthusiasm for God and the working of miracles can be performed even under the influence and power of Satan. Unlike us, Satan obviously has supernatural abilities and will use them to deceive people inside and outside the church. Paul warns that “Satan himself masquerades [walks about in disguise] as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, that many of his servants’ masquerade as servants of righteousness” (2 Corinthians 11:14-15; Matthew 24:24). Paul makes it clear that what might appear to be a powerful gift of ministry can be “the work of Satan” (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10; Revelation 13:3, 12). 

Many times, God overrides Satan’s activity in false preachers in order to bring genuine spiritual salvation or healing to those who truly respond to God’s Word (Philippians 1:15-18). This means that if the message is true – even when the minister is not – it can still have the proper godly effect on people’s lives. It is always God’s desire that those who proclaim His message are in a right relationship with Him (1Timothy 3:1-7). Yet, when an evil or immoral person preaches God’s Word, God can still work in the hearts of those who receive the Word and trust Christ. God does not give His approval on any unrighteous minister or teacher, but He does honor the truth of the message and will save all who accept it in faith.

Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

MANY WILL SAY LORD, LORD / MATTHEW 7:22

Jesus clearly states that there will be “many” who believe they are serving Him and who appear to do great works for Him, yet in reality they never had a true personal relationship with Christ (Matthew 7:23). To escape the temptation and deceit that will be very common in the end times, church leaders (or any follower of Christ) must be totally committed to the truth revealed in God’s Word (Revelation 22:19). We must never consider outward “success” or results from ministry as the standard by which to determine our relationship with Christ. Each of us must strive to know Him deeply and to live by the instructions and guidelines in God’s Word.

DOES THE WILL OF MY FATHER / MATTHEW 7:21

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

DOES THE WILL OF MY FATHER / MATTHEW 7:21

Jesus emphatically taught that carrying out God’s purposes and desires was a condition for entering the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 7:22-27; 19:16-26; 25:31-46). This certainly does not mean that we can earn spiritual salvation by our own efforts or works. This is true for the following reasons:

  1. God’s forgiveness comes to us through faith and repentance (admitting our sin, turning from our own way, submitting to God and following His purposes). It is made possible by the grace and sacrificial death of Christ, who gave His perfect life to pay the ultimate penalty for our sins (Matthew 26:28; Luke 15:11-32; 18:9-14).
  2. The obedience of God’s will demanded by Christ is an ongoing condition for salvation; it does not save us, but it is a response and a result of true salvation. Yet, it is still God’s power and grace (undeserved favor, love and help) that enable us to live by His standards. This means that we must continually pray for that grace, receive it and put it into action by true faith and devotion to Christ. Note the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9; Matthew 6:10; Matthew 6:11; Matthew 6:12; Matthew 6:13) and the many challenges and warnings directed toward Christians, telling them to put sin to death (to rid their lives of sin and not respond to its appeal) and to present themselves to God as living sacrifices (Romans 6:1-23; 8:1-17; 12:1-2; Matthew 5:6).
  3. Because of the gift of God’s power and grace, we are capable of doing God’s power and grace, we are capable of doing God’s will and living right as we follow Christ with all of our heart (Ephesians 2:5). God’s Word says that “by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God…For we are God’s workmanship” (Ephesians 2:8-10).
  4. God always gives us the strength and ability to obey Him and overcome sin. That is part of the full salvation He works out through those who have entrusted their lives to Him and have been restored to a personal relationship with Jesus. “For it is God who works out through those who have entrusted their lives to him and have been restored to a personal relationship with Jesus. “For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose” (Philippians 2:13). Yet God’s gift of grace – His favor, help and mercy that we do not deserve – does not cancel the need for action on our part. We must respond positively to God’s gift of obedience (Ephesians 4:22-32; Jude 1:20-21; Jude 1:24-25; Philippians 2:12). We are always free to reject God’s grace, refuse to depend on Christ (Hebrews 7:25) and refuse to pray for and accept the life of obedience (Matthew 5:6).

Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

BY THEIR FRUIT YOU WILL RECOGNIZE THEM / MATTHEW 7:16

False teachers who outwardly appear to be godly but “inwardly…are ferocious wolves” (Matthew 7:5) can be identified by their “fruit” – their true spiritual character and their effect on others. With time, their fruit always shows what is really in their hearts. The fruit shows what is really in their hearts. The fruit of false teachers will be spiritually unhealthy, and they will produce ungodly fruit in the lives of their followers (1 John 4:5-6), such as those listed below. 

  1. They will claim to follow Christ but will be more loyal to the personalities of men than to God’s Word (Matthew 7:21). That is to say, they worship the creature more than the Creator (Romans 1:25). 
  2. They will be more concerned with their own desires than with God’s glory and honor. Their beliefs and teachings will be self-centered rather than God-centered (Matthew 7:21-23; 2 Timothy 4:3). 
  3. They will accept human teachings and traditions even when those teachings contradict God’s Word (Matthew 7:24-27; 1 John 4:6). 
  4. They will seek and respond to religious experiences and supernatural activity as their final authority in determining “truth” (Matthew 7:22-23), rather than spiritually growing up in the instruction of God’s entire Word. 

They will not accept the true and authoritative teaching of God’s Word but will instead look for and listen only to teachers who say what they want to hear, as if the road to salvation is “wide” and permissive (Matthew 7:14). Jesus says they want only to respond to messages that accept and approve of their selfish interests and ungodly behavior (Matthew 7:13-14, 23; 2 Timothy 4:3).

SMALL IS THE GATE … AND ONLY A FEW FIND IT / MATTHEW 7:14

Christ taught that we are not to expect a majority of people to follow Him on the road that leads to eternal life with God. 

  1. Comparatively few will pass through the gate of godly humility and true repentance (Matthew 3:2) – turning from and denying their own way in order to follow Jesus. This means doing all that we can to obey His commands, pursuing His purposes and standards and pressing on through the difficulties of life with true faith, purity and love. 

In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus describes the great benefits and blessings that go along with being His disciple (a disciplined follower, learner, Matthew 5:3-12). Jesus taught that following Him is costly. It involves making difficult choices and going through difficult situations at times. There are obligations concerning right living, pressing on in faith through persecution, love for our enemies and self-denial. The initial step of surrendering to Christ and accepting His forgiveness for sin may not be difficult but trusting Him to make the necessary life changes and continuing to follow Him, no matter what, is not an easy path to follow and will test our faith extremely.

Christ promises that God the Father will not disappoint His children. He loves us even more than any good earthly father could love his children; and He wants us to ask Him for whatever we need, promising to give us what is good and best for us. He desires to provide solutions for our problems and to supply our daily needs. And most of all, He gives the Holy Spirit to His children as their Counselor and Helper (Luke 11:13; John 14:16-18).

ASK … SEEK … KNOCK / MATTHEW 7:7-8

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

ASK … SEEK … KNOCK / MATTHEW 7:7-8

Jesus encourages perseverance (“active patience,” determination) in prayer. The tense of the Greek verbs in Matthew 7:8 carries the meaning of action that keeps going on. This means we must keep on asking, seeking and knocking. This does not mean that we need to beg God to answer our prayers. Rather, it means that instead of worrying about a certain issue, we take it to God and acknowledge that the situation is in His hands. Asking means that we recognize our needs and that we trust God to hear our prayers. Seeking means that our request is earnest and that we are willing to obey God and pursue His purposes when He responds with an answer or instruction. Knocking means that we keep bringing the request to God even when He does not respond quickly. Such “active patience “does not show a lack of faith, but rather a constant admission that we need God’s help and have turned over our needs to Him. Christ’s assurance that those who ask will receive from God based on:

  1. Keeping our priorities focused on God and seeking His kingdom purposes first (Matthew 6:33)
  2. Recognizing God’s fatherly goodness and love (Matthew 6:8; 7:11; John 15:16; 16:23, 26; Colossians 1:9-12)
  3. Praying according to God’s will and keeping our desires in line with His (Mark 11:24; John 21:22; 1 John 5:14)

Maintaining communication and friendship with Christ (1 John 3:22).

Judge not, that ye be not judged.

DO NOT JUDGE / MATTHEW 7:1

Jesus condemns the habit of criticizing others while we ignore our own faults. Believers must first submit to God’s righteous examination and to the standards of His Word before attempting to evaluate and influence the conduct of others – particularly other Christians (Matthew 7:3-5). Judging in an unjust or unqualified manner also includes condemning or rejecting someone who is doing wrong without sincerely desiring to see the person turn to God and receive forgiveness (Luke 6:36-34). It is an attitude that would prefer God’s judgment on people before they respond to His mercy. 

  1. This passage is often abused and taken out of context to defend behavior that is immoral and clearly contrary to the instruction in God’s Word. However, Christ is not denying the need to exercise discernment or make value judgments with respect to sin in others. We certainly must do this in order to avoid the sin ourselves. There also are times when we must speak out against certain behaviors that defy God and corrupt society – especially when those behaviors make their way into the church. Jesus commands us to identify false ministers within the church – those whose message is not consistent with God’s Word (Matthew 7:15). He also expects us to consider how a person’s character compares with the standards of truth given in God’s Word in order to avoid associating with people who lack integrity and could influence us to disobey God (Matthew 7:6; John 7:24; 1 Corinthians 5:12; Galatians 1:9; 1 Timothy 4:1; 1 John 4:1).
  2. This verse must not be used as an excuse for not exercising church discipline (Matthew 18:15). God does not expect us to tolerate continual sin in our own lives or in the lives of people in the church because it will cut off the flow of the Holy spirit’s work in and through a congregation.  

Jesus follows His warning about making undue judgments by saying that we should “not give dogs what is sacred” or “throw pearls to pigs” (Matthew 7:6). He is saying that there is no use trying to teach or correct a person beyond their ability to understand the truth. This explains why it is usually ineffective for God’s followers to attempt to correct sinful behaviors in the world by “attacking” those who are still enslaved to sin. This only leads to greater opposition, and they react by choosing to “trample” on the truth.

SEEK … KINGDOM … RIGHTEOUSNESS / MATTHEW 6:33

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Matthew 6:33

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

SEEK … KINGDOM … RIGHTEOUSNESS / MATTHEW 6:33

Those who follow Christ are urged to seek – above all else – God’s kingdom and His righteousness. The verb “seek” means being continually absorbed in a search for something or making a long and consistent effort to obtain something (Matthew 13:45). God’s kingdom and righteousness are not passive matters; they are things we must actively pursue. Christ refers to two objects, or focuses, of our seeking: 

  1. “His kingdom” (His power and authority overall, His purposes and way of life both on earth and into eternity) – we must desperately desire for God’s authority and power to be evident in our lives and in our Christian gatherings. Our own desires should never get in the way of what God wants to do in our individual lives and our churches. We must pray that God’s kingdom will operate in the mighty power of the Holy Spirit to save people from sin, to destroy demonic power, to heal the sick and to bring honor to the Lord Jesus in every way.
  2. “His righteousness” (His standards of truth, right and goodness) – through the power of the Holy Spirit, we must make every effort to obey Christ’s commands, show Christ’s standard of truth and right, avoid the ungodly practices of the world and show Christ’s love toward everyone (Philippians 2:12-13).

These words contain God’s promise to all His children in this age of trouble and uncertainty. God has promised to provide our food, clothing and other necessities. We do not need to worry about such things. We can be sure that God will assume full responsibility for those who are submitted entirely to His authority and purposes (Philippians 4:6; 1 Peter 5:7).
