Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Our warfare against Satan’s spiritual forces calls for serious and continued prayer. This means praying “in the Spirit,” “on all occasions,” “with all kinds of prayers,” “for all the saints,” “and always keep on praying.” Prayer is not to be viewed just as another spiritual weapon, but as the very act of battle itself as we work together with God to gain the victory for ourselves and others. Failing to pray diligently, with all kinds of prayer in all situations, is to surrender to the enemy (Luke 18:1; Romans 12:12; Philippians 4:6; Colossians 4:2; 1 Thessalonians 5:16-17).

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT / EPHESIANS 6:17

The “sword of the Spirit” – the Word of God – is our offensive weapon to be used in the war against the powers of evil. Jesus effectively used this weapon against Satan (Matthew 4:1-11; Luke 4:1-13). We must know God’s Word and be confident of its power and effectiveness. Satan will try to twist God’s Word, as he has from the beginning (Genesis 3:1-5), and he will make every effort to undermine or destroy the Christian’s confidence in God’s Word. The church must hold on to and defend the inspired Word of God against claims and attacks that it is not authentic and accurate in everything it teaches. To abandon the attitude of Christ and the apostles toward God’s inspired Word is to deny its power to expose evil, to correct, to save, to heal, to drive out demons and to overcome all evil. To deny Scripture’s absolute authority and trustworthiness in all it teaches is to surrender ourselves to Satan’s deception, influence, control and final destruction (2 Peter 1:21; Matthew 4:1-11).

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

PUT ON THE FULL ARMOR OF GOD / EPHESIANS 6:13

We cannot effectively take part in spiritual warfare in our own strength and with our own plans and strategies; we will surely be defeated or even destroyed. In order to do effective spiritual battle and come out victorious against satanic forces of evil, we must use the armor that God provides. The full armor of God includes:

“The belt of truth” – allegiance to God’s truth and commitment to integrity – rather than physical force – will win spiritual battles and will help secure the other elements of spiritual armor (Isaiah 11:5; John 8:32; 17:17).
“The breastplate of righteousness” – Godly character and a right relationship with God are necessary in protecting our heart and allowing us to fight effectively for purity and justice (Isaiah 59:17; 1 Peter 2:24).
“Feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace” – Believing and boldly proclaiming Christ’s message is a sure way to advance Christ’s cause and overcome the enemy (Acts 10:36; Revelation 12:11).
“The shield of faith” – This pictures the large Roman shield, covered in leather and often soaked with water to extinguish flame-tipped arrows; this symbolizes how bold faith (believing and claiming God’s promises) helps us throw off enemy attacks (1 John 5:4).
“The helmet of salvation” – Being renewed in our minds (Romans 12:2) and confident of our relationship with God will protect us in battle and allow us to follow a God-given strategy of victory (Psalms 27:1; Isaiah 59:17; Acts 4:12).
“The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17).

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

FORCES OF EVIL / EPHESIANS 6:12

We must keep in mind that our primary source of conflict in life is not circumstances or other people who irritate, offend, annoy or hurt us; they are not the real enemy. The enemy with whom we are at war is Satan and a multitude of evil spirits (Matthew 4:10).

These powers of darkness are the spiritual forces of evil (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11; 2 Corinthians 4:4; 1 John 5:19) that energize, influence and control ungodly people (Ephesians 2:2). These dark forces oppose God’s purposes, plans and forces oppose God’s purposes, plans and desires (Genesis 3:1-7; Daniel 10:12-13; Matthew 13:38-39). They frequently attack people – particularly Christians – using various schemes and strategies (1 Peter 5:8; Ephesians 6:11).
There are multitudes of these evil powers (Revelation 12:4; Revelation 12:7-9), and they are highly organized into an empire of evil with rank and order (Ephesians 2:1-2; John 14:30).

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

AGAINST THE DEVIL’S SCHEMES / EPHESIANS 6:11

Christians are involved in a spiritual conflict with evil. This conflict is described as a warfare of faith (2 Corinthians 10:4; 1 Timothy 1:18-19; 6:12) that continues until they pass from this present life and enter the life to come (2 Timothy 4:7-8; Galatians 5:17). Satan is a master strategist who aims to hurt and destroy us by his various schemes. Causing division in the church and unbelief in God’s promises is among “the devil’s schemes.” Satan’s strategies also include discouragement, temptation, unforgiveness, fear, accusation, giving in to our sinful desires (particularly in our weak areas), spiritual laziness, etc. He will do whatever it takes to entice believers to compromise their conscience and distract them from devotion to Jesus. Paul instructs believers to take their stand against the devil’s schemes.

We can take confidence that our victory has been secured by Christ through His death on the cross to pay the price for our sins. Jesus disarmed the evil powers and authorities (Colossians 2:15; Matthew 12:29; Luke 10:18; John 12:31), leading captives to freedom (Ephesians 4:8) and rescuing those who entrust their lives to Him (Ephesians 1:7; Acts 26:18; Romans 3:24; Colossians 1:13-14).
At the present time, we are involved in spiritual warfare through the might and power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:13). This warfare involves doing battle: (a) against our own rebellious desires (1 Peter 2:11; Galatians 5:17), (b) against the ungodly pleasures of the world and temptations of every kind (Matthew 13:22; Galatians 1:4; James 1:14-15; 1 John 2:16) and (c) against Satan and his demonic forces (Ephesians 6:12). As God’s people, we are called on to separate ourselves from the ungodly beliefs, behaviors and lifestyles that are common in the present world system. This includes hating, resisting and avoiding the world’s evil (Hebrews 1:9), overcoming and dying to worldly temptations (Galatians 6:14; 1 John 5:4) and exposing and speaking against sin and evil (John 7:7).
We must stand in battle against all evil, not in our own power (2 Corinthians 10:3) but with spiritual weapons (Ephesians 6:10-18; 2 Corinthians 10:4-5).
In our warfare of faith, we are called to do many things: Put on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:13), stand firm (Ephesians 6:14), wage war (2 Corinthians 10:3), fight the good fight of faith (1 Timothy 6:12; 2 Timothy 4:7), persevere in prayer (Ephesians 6:18), endure hardships like good soldiers of Christ (2 Timothy 2:3), suffer for the message of Christ (Matthew 5:10-12; Romans 8:17; 2 Corinthians 11:23; 2 Timothy 1:8), defend the message of Christ (Philippians 1:16), contend for the faith (Philippians 1:27; Jude 1:3), not be frightened by opponents (Philippians 1:28), conquer (Romans 8:37), be victorious (1 Corinthians 15:57), triumph (2 Corinthians 2:14),destroy Satan’s strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4), take captive every thought (2 Corinthians 10:5) and become powerful in battle (Hebrews 11:34).

HUSBANDS LOVE YOUR WIVES / EPHESIANS 5:25

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; ²⁶That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, ²⁷That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. ²⁸So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

HUSBANDS LOVE YOUR WIVES / EPHESIANS 5:25

Submission in the marriage relationship is not the attitude required only of wives (Ephesians 5:21). In fact, as the head of the home, the husband is to take the lead in submitting to and serving the best interests of his wife and children. He must help his wife fulfill her God-given roles at home, in the church and in all aspects of life. The fact that the husband is called to love his wife “just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her” is an extreme challenge. It is hardly possible for any human to love even Christ as much as He loves us, and yet the husband is charged with the responsibility of loving his wife in that way. Of course, this does not mean that we are to love any person over God, but rather that the husband is to follow Christ’s example of showing self-sacrificing love for his wife. In this way, the husband is actually called to a more extreme expression of submission and devotion than is the wife.

HUSBAND … HEAD / EPHESIANS 5:23

God has established the family as the basic and foundational unit in society. Every family must have a leader. For this reason, God has assigned to the husband the responsibility of being the head of the wife and family (Ephesians 5:23-33; 6:4). His headship must be exercised in love, gentleness and consideration for his wife and family (Ephesians 5:25-30; 6:4). The husband’s God-given responsibility as “head of the wife” includes:

Provision for the family’s spiritual and domestic needs (Ephesians 5:23-24; Genesis 3:16-19; 1 Timothy 5:8).
Love, protection and interest in her welfare in the same way that Christ loves the church (Ephesians 5:23-33).
Honor, understanding, appreciation and thoughtfulness (Colossians 3:19: 1 Peter 3:7).
Absolute faithfulness to the marriage relationship (Ephesians 5:31; Matthew 5:27-28).

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

WIVES SUBMIT / EPHESIANS 5:22

The wife is given the God-appointed task of helping and submitting (Ephesians 5:21) to her husband (Ephesians 5:22-24). The meaning of “submit” as used here is not referring in a strict sense to obedience, which is never used in Scripture with respect to a wife’s relationship to her husband, Her God-given duty to her husband includes love (Titus 2:4), respect (Ephesians 5:33; 1 Peter 3:1-2), assistance (Genesis 2:18), purity (Titus 2:5; 1 Peter 3:2), submissiveness (Ephesians 5:22; 1 Peter 3:5), development of a gentle and quiet spirit (1 Peter 3:4) and being a good mother (Titus 2:4) and caretaker of the home (1 Timothy 2:15; 5:14; Titus 2:5). Submitting to a husband “as to the Lord” does not put the husband in the place of the Lord but shows that the wife ought to submit to her husband as an act of submission to the Lord. In this way, God sees the wife’s actions toward her husband as an actual part of her obedience to Jesus (Galatians 3:28; 1 Timothy 2:13, 15; Titus 2:4).

Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

SUBMIT TO ONE ANOTHER / EPHESIANS 5:21

To submit means to yield one’s own rights for the sake of another. The general Biblical principle of mutual submission in Christ (God’s people submitting to one another in their interpersonal relationships) has as its goal to do what is best for others and to help them fulfill their God-given purposes. This principle is to be applied first of all to the Christian family. Submission, humility, gentleness, patience and respect must be characteristics reflected in the life of each member of the family. The wife must submit (yield in love) to her husband’s responsibility of leadership in the family (Ephesians 5:22). The husband must submit to his wife’s needs in an attitude of love and self-sacrifice (Ephesians 5:23). Children must submit to the authority of the parents in obedience to God (Ephesians 6:1). And parents must submit to the needs of their children and instruct them in the ways of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4).

Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

SING … TO THE LORD / EPHESIANS 5:19

Spirit-filled people (Ephesians 5:18) are encouraged to engage in three types of singing:

“Psalms” refer to the Old Testament psalms, which would have been much like the primary songbook for God’s people well into the early church period. This could represent singing God’s Word in general.
“Hymns” were early Christian confessions of faith in God and the message of Christ, which were sung as a church body. In general, a hymn is a song of praise to God that focuses on His acts of character traits.
“Spiritual songs” can be any songs that honor God and uplift the worshiper, including spontaneous words of praise, such as a prophetic song (1 Samuel 2:1-10; Luke 1:46-55, 67-69).

Singing is a language of the heart and a way of expressing inner joy, praise, worship, love, longing and thanksgiving to God. Singing can be an expression of the Holy Spirit within us (Ephesians 5:18; 1 Corinthians 14:14). All types of Christian singing – both in the church and in private – should be primarily directed to God as prayers of praise, worship or sincere request (Psalms 40:3; 77:6). Singing can be a means of encouragement, building others up, teaching, giving thanks and praying (Colossians 3:16). The purpose of singing God’s Word, hymns or spiritual songs is not entertainment, personal pleasure or to display one’s spirituality; it is to honor, praise and worship God (Romans 15:9-11; Revelation 5:9-10).
