JOINED TOGETHER CONSTANTLY IN PRAYER / ACTS 1:14

START YOU DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Acts 1:14

These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

JOINED TOGETHER CONSTANTLY IN PRAYER / ACTS 1:14

The Greek word here is homothumadon, from home (“same”) and thumos (“mind” or “spirit”). Christ’s followers before Pentecost faithfully joined together in obedience to Jesus’ instructions to wait for the Father’s promise of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4; Acts1:5). Their minds, affections and desires were focused together “in prayer” with extraordinary unity and purpose, as they waited ‘until” (Luke 24:49) the Holy Spirit came to them in tremendous power. The Pentecostal experience (the baptism in the spirit that first happened on the day of Pentecost; always involves human responsibility. Those who desire the empowering presence of the Spirit so they can do God’s work should earnestly make themselves available to the Holy Spirit through commitment to God’s will (His desires, purposes and plans) and through prayer (Acts 1:4; Acts 2:38; Acts 9:11-17; Isaiah 40:29-31; Luke 11:5-13; 24:49). Notice the parallels between the Spirit coming on Jesus and the Spirit coming on His disciples.

  1. The Spirit descended on them after they had prayed (Luke 3:21-22; Acts 1:14; Acts 2:4).
  2. There were outward sign and evidence of the Spirit (Luke 3:21-22; Acts 2:2-4).
  3. The ministries of both Jesus and the disciples began fully after the Spirit came on them to empower them (compare Matthew 3:16 with Matthew 4:17; Luke 3:21-23 with Luke 4:14-19; Acts 2:14-47).

WITH [IN] THE HOLY SPIRIT / ACTS 1:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Acts 1:5 For

John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

WITH [IN] THE HOLY SPIRIT / ACTS 1:5

The proposition “with” is the translation of the Greek word en and is often translated as “in.” This means that the phrase also could be interpreted, “you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit.” In the same way, ‘baptized with water” may be translated “baptized in water.” The word “baptized” suggests being immersed, so baptism in the Spirit is being immersed in and saturated with the Holy Spirit’s power. Jesus himself is the one who baptizes his followers in the Holy Spirit (John 1:33).

GIFT MY FATHER PROMISED / ACTS 1:4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Acts 1:4

And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

GIFT MY FATHER PROMISED / ACTS 1:4

The gift that God the Father promised (Joel 2:28-29; Matthew 3:11) is the baptism in the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5). The fulfillment of that promise is described as being “filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:4). This means that being “baptized in the Spirit” and “filled with the Spirit” are at times used in place of one another in Acts. However, not every reference to being filled with the Spirit is speaking of the baptism in the Holy Spirit. This baptism in the Holy Spirit is not the same as receiving the Holy Spirit, which happens at the point when a person accepts Christ’s forgiveness, yields his or her life to Him and becomes spiritually “saved.” These are two distinct works of the Spirit, sometimes separated by a period of time.

MY FORMER BOOK / ACTS 1:1-2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Acts 1:1-2

The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach. Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:

MY FORMER BOOK / ACTS 1:1-2

In Luke’s Gospel (his written narrative of the “good news” and true story of Jesus Christ), we have the account of “all that Jesus began to do and to teach.” This statement suggests that Jesus continues to work and teach; He does so through His followers (John 14:12). In the book of Acts, we have the continuing story of how Jesus’ followers – in the same power of the Holy Spirit that characterized Jesus’ life (Luke 4:1-2; Luke 4:14) – spread the same message, worked the same kind of miracles and lived the same kind of life (Acts 3:6-7; 4:1-2, 18). The major theme of the book of Acts is how the Holy Spirit continued to reproduce the life and work of Jesus through the church (the worldwide community of all His true followers working together). The book could well be called “The Acts of the Holy Spirit.” Observe the following points concerning the Holy Spirit’s inspired record in the book of Acts:

  1. All of God’s written Word, including the historical accounts in Acts, is accurate, relevant and beneficial for teaching and studying about God and His relationship to people and the world. This is confirmed by two facts: (a) the Bibles’s declaration that “all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16); (b) Paul’s statement that the Old Testament historical accounts have specific teaching and instructional purposes (1 Corinthians 10:11). He maintains that these stories are given as examples with practical and spiritual relevance for Christ’s followers to this day (Romans 15:4). What is true for historical accounts in the Old Testament is certainly true for the accounts in Acts of the New Testament church and its leaders.
  2. Luke’s inspired record of the history of the church in its beginning stages provides: (a) a reliable pattern of the Holy Spirit’s activity, which becomes the model during the entire church age (until Christ returns to take all of His true followers in the church out of the world), (b) information for developing a foundation of faith and accurate teaching about the Holy Spirit and (c) revelation about how the Spirit’s work must relate to the lives of Christians. Two specific elements in this book that should be considered normal in the lives of individual Christians and the church as a body of believers are (i) the baptism in (or filling with) the Holy Spirit, which is God’s promise for all followers of Christ (Acts 2:39; Acts 1:5; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:4; Acts 4:8; Acts 4:31; Acts 8:15-16; Acts 8:17; Acts 10:44-46; Acts 10:46; Acts 13:9; Acts 13:52; Acts 15:8; 19:1-6 and (ii) the Spirit’s various activities that set the standards of character, boldness and power that God still desires for His people in the church.

I WAS NOT DISOBEDIENT / ACTS 26:19

Paul’s spiritual conversion (salvation, life transformation) to faith in Christ occurred on his journey to Damascus. From that moment on, he recognized Jesus as Savior and Lord – the Forgiver of his sins and Leader of his life – and dedicated his life to obeying the Lord (Romans 1:5).

PAUL’S GOD-GIVEN COMMISSION / ACTS 26:17-18

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Acts 26:17-18 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,

18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

PAUL’S GOD-GIVEN COMMISSION / ACTS 26:17-18

This verse is a classic statement of the effects Jesus desires from the preaching of His message to spiritually lost people (those who have not yet received His forgiveness and a renewed personal relationship with Him).

  1. “Open their eyes.” Those who do not know Christ are blinded by Satan to the reality of their spiritual lostness and future destruction. They do not comprehend the truth of the gospel (2 Corinthians 4:4). Preaching about Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit is the only thing that will expose their true condition and “open their eyes” of understanding (2 Corinthians 4:5; Ephesians 1:18).
  2. “Turn them from…the power of Satan to God.” Satan is the ruler of this world full of people who choose to go their own way. All who have not surrendered their lives to Christ’s authority are under Satan’s control and enslaved to his power. Satan’s work and influence are evident in all who follow the ways of the world and “in those who are disobedient” (Ephesians 2:2). Preaching about Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit will rescue men and women from Satan’s power and bring them into Christ’s kingdom (Colossians 1:13; 1 Peter 2:9).
  3. “That they may receive forgiveness of sins.” Forgiveness is only possible because of Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross, which paid the full penalty for our sins. When people hear this message, they can respond in faith by accepting Christ’s sacrifice for themselves and by yielding control of their lives to Him.
  4. “A place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.” Those who are forgiven of sin, freed from the power of Satan, and spiritually renewed by the Holy Spirit are then set apart from the world and reserved for God’s purposes. Through the further experience of baptism in the Holy Spirit, they are empowered for those purposes as they grow deeper in their relationship with Christ.

HIS WITNESSES TO OUR PEOPLE / ACTS 13:31

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Acts 13:13
And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people.

HIS WITNESSES TO OUR PEOPLE / ACTS 13:31

A witness (Greek martus) is “one who testifies by actions or words to the truth.” Christian witnesses are those who confirm and testify to the spiritually saving work of Jesus Christ by word, actions, lifestyle and, if necessary, even death. Witnessing involves seven principles:

  1. Christian witnessing is the responsibility of all followers of Christ (Acts 1:8; Matthew 4:19; Matthew 28:19 Matthew 28:20).
  2. Christian witnesses must be missionary-minded (Acts 13:2; Acts 2:3), determined to communicate the massage of Christ to all people of all cultures in all nations – to the ends of the earth (Acts 11:18; Acts 13:2; Acts 2:3; Acts 2:4; Acts 26:18; Matthew 28:19; Matthew 19:20; Luke 24:47).
  3. Christian witnesses speak mainly about the meaning of Christ’s life, death, resurrection, saving power and promised gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:32, Acts 2:38; Acts 2:39; Acts 3:15; Acts 10:39-41, 43: Acts 18:5; Acts 26:16; 1 Corinthians 15:1-8).
  4. Christian witnesses must allow the Holy Spirit to work through them to bring conviction (to expose and convince people of their spiritual need). This concerns their guilt in regard to sin against God, their need for a right relationship with Him through Christ and their ultimate accountability to God (Acts 2:37: Acts 2:38; Acts 2:39; Acts 2:40; Acts 7:51; Acts 7:53-54; 24:24-25; John 16:8). This kind of God-inspired witness will challenge people to respond to God with faith and to accept a personal relationship with Him (Acts 2:41; Acts 4:33; Acts 6:7; Acts 11:21).
  5. Christian witnesses at times will suffer (Acts 7:57-60; Acts 22:20; 2 Corinthians 11:23-29). The word “martyr” (one who dies for a cause of belief) comes from the Greek word for witness. Discipleship involves commitment, no matter what the cost.
  6. Christian witnessing must involve separation from the ungodly practices of the world (Acts 2:40). It must stem from a life that follows God’s standards of right and wrong (Romans 14:17) and relies totally on the Holy Spirit (Acts 4:29; Acts 4:29 – Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your … (biblestudytools.com); Acts 4:31; Acts 4:33). As a result, God’s presence and power will be obvious in the life of the witness (1 Corinthians 2:4).
  7. Christian witnessing is prophetic in that it involves using one’s voice to honor God through the power (Acts1:8) and inspiration (Acts 2:4; Acts 4:8) of the Holy Spirit.

SAUL WHO WAS ALSO CALLED PAUL – PAUL FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / ACTS 13:9

(KJV) Acts 13:9

Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him,

SAUL WHO WAS ALSO CALLED PAUL – PAUL FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / ACTS 13:9

SAUL WHO WAS ALSO CALLED PAUL

Saul was a Jewish name, a form of the Hebrew Sha’ul, meaning “asked for.” Paul is a form of the Latin Paulus, meaning “little.” After Paul received a fresh and special filling of the Holy Spirit he became a senior leader of the mission to the Gentiles (those of all nations who are not Israelite or Jewish). This ministry among the Gentiles may be the reason he chose to be known by his Roman name, Paul. Some commentators suggest that because Paul did not want to have a following or a church to be based around himself, he wanted to be known as “the little one.” He wanted to honor and exalt Christ and keep him at the center of the church’s attention – which Paul certainly did.

PAUL FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

PAUL, FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

One may already be baptized in the Spirit, as was Paul (Acts 9:17), yet in times of special need may also receive fresh fillings with the Spirit. Such repeated fillings are necessary,

  1. In confronting opposition to Christian ministry (Acts 4:8; Acts 4:12).
  2. In advancing the massage of Christ (Acts 4:8; Acts 4:31).
  3. In directly challenging Satan’s activity (Acts 13:9; Acts 13:52). Repeated and ongoing fillings with the Spirit should be the normal experience for all Christians who are baptized in the Holy Spirit.

LAID THEIR HANDS ON THEM / ACTS 6:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

LAID THEIR HANDS ON THEM / ACTS 6:6

In the New Testament, the laying on of hands was used in five ways:

  1. In connection with miracles of healing (Acts 28:8; Matthew 5:23; 6:5).
  2. In blessing others (Matthew 19:13,15).
  3. In connection with the baptism in the Spirit (Acts 8:17; Acts 8:19; Act 19:6).
  4. In commissioning (officially assigning) people for a specific work or responsibility (Acts 6:6; Acts 13:3; 1 Timothy 5:22).
  5. In conveying or recognizing spiritual gifts by the church leaders (Acts 8:17; Acts 19:6; 1 Timothy 4:14; 2 Timothy 1:6).

As one of the ways by which God commissions people to use spiritual gifts (God-given abilities to honor Him and benefit others) and also conveys His blessings to people, laying on of hands became a foundational teaching in the early church (Hebrews 6:2). It must not be detached from prayer because prayer focuses on God as the source of the gifts, healings or baptism in the Holy Spirit, not the person who is ministering.

The two Greek words that describe the responsibilities of these seven men (“wait on”) is the verb from which the noun “deacon” comes (later we read of deacons in the church, Philippians 1:1; 1 Timothy 3:8-13). The Greek word for deacon can also be translated “minister” or “servant.” Ordaining or commissioning the seven men here meant primarily two things.

  1. It was public testimony or recognition by the church that these seven men has a history f showing godly character and faithfulness to the Spirit’s leading (1 Timothy 3:1-10).
  2. It was an act of setting these men apart, dedicating them to God’s work and confirming their willingness to accept their God-given responsibilities.

FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / ACTS 13:52

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Acts 13:52
And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / ACTS 13:52

The form of the Greek verb translated “filled” expresses continued action in past time. The disciples were being continually filled and empowered day by day. That is, they were like containers filled with fresh water, which were continually having more fresh water poured into them so that they overflowed and affected everything around them. The Spirit’s fullness is not merely a one-time initial experience, but rather a life of fresh and renewed fillings that give God’s people the ability to accomplish specific tasks, meet specific refreshment to others (Ephesians 5:18).
