IF WE CLAIM TO BE WITHOUT SIN / 1 JOHN 1:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT WITH DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 1:8

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

IF WE CLAIM TO BE WITHOUT SIN / 1 JOHN 1:8

John uses the noun “sin” (Greek hamartian) – wrong-doing, offense against God and being out of bounds by His standards – rather than the verb. This means that he is emphasizing sin not just as a matter of God-defying actions but as a basic principle or trait in human nature.

  1. John is probably arguing against those who claim that sin does not exist as a principle or power in human nature, or those who say that their evil actions are not really sin. This deceptive belief is still with us today in those who deny the fact of sin or have a deterministic view of evil. Those who follow this view believe that sin is determined by outside causes or things we cannot control such as biological, psychological, or social factors. Therefore, each person has little or no real choice in relation to who they are and what they do. This leads to the conclusion that no one is responsible for his or her own sinful actions (Romans 6:1-2; 7:9-11).
  2. Believers must be aware that the sinful nature is a very real and continuous threat in their lives. Through the power of the Holy Spirit within them, Christ’s followers must constantly put to death the God-defying tendencies and actions of the sinful nature (Romans 6:11; 8:13; Galatians 5:16-25).

BECAUSE WE OBEY HIS COMMANDS / 1 JOHN 3:22

BECAUSE WE OBEY HIS COMMANDS / 1 JOHN 3:22

John declares that an effective prayer life is related to our devotion to God. Obeying, loving, and pleasing God (John 8:29; 2 Corinthians 5:9; Ephesians 5:10; Hebrews 13:21) are basic conditions for what we ask for in prayer. Of course, receiving answers to prayer also requires asking with the right motives (James 4:3) and asking according to God’s own desires and purposes (1 John 5:14). Having proper motives and knowing God’s will ware directly linked to our personal relationship with Christ (Psalms 50:14-15; Proverbs 15:29; Isaiah 59:1-2; Matthew 6:15; Mark 11:25; James 5:16).

MUST WALK AS JESUS DID / 1 JOHN 2:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 2:6

He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

MUST WALK AS JESUS DID / 1 JOHN 2:6

Following Jesus’ example is not meant to be optional for Christians; it is to be a way of life (Acts 11:26) that boldly identifies with Christ (Mark 8:34) and reflects His character. This is not entirely possible without spending time in God’s Word because that is the one place where we actually see what Jesus would do. By studying God’s Word for ourselves and praying that God would help us apply it to our lives, we invite the Holy Spirit to guide us in Jesus’ steps and develop His character in us (John 14:25-26; 17:12-15).

THE DEVIL / 1 JOHN 3:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 3:8
He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

THE DEVIL / 1 JOHN 3:8

Many people in the world, even some in the church, refuse to accept the fact of a real devil who wars against God and seeks to destroy people spiritually and in every other way (1 Peter 5:8). But John, one of Jesus’ closest followers, has much to say about “the devil.” He calls him “the evil one” (1 John 3:13; 2:13-14; 5:18-19), who “has been sinning from the beginning” (from the time he first rebelled against God, before the temptation of Adam and Eve, John 8:44). He is the instigator of sin, and those who continue to live in sin are “of the devil” (1 John 3:8), are his children (1 John 3:12). He is behind “the spirit of antichrist” that is in the world (1 John 4:3), and he has “the whole world” – those who do not follow God -under his control (1 John 5:19). But the devil cannot permanently harm God’s children (1 John 5:18). In fact, the follower of Christ will “overcome the evil one” (1 John 2:13-14; 4:4), and Christ will “destroy the devil’s work” (1 John 3:8).

ASK ANYTHING ACCORDING TO HIS WILL / 1 JOHN 5:14

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

ASK ANYTHING ACCORDING TO HIS WILL / 1 JOHN 5:14

Our prayers (as our lives) are effective in accomplishing God’s purposes only if they are fully submitted to and it tune with God, His Word, and His will for our lives. (God’s will can be described as His desires and plans based on His character and purposes.) When we pray, we are to focus on who God is and what He can accomplish through our lives if we are in right relationship with Him. Praying with such an awareness will increase our faith and dependence on God (John 14:13). We can know God’s will in many instances because it is directly revealed in His Word. At other times, it becomes clear only as we earnestly pray and rely on God to guide our lives and show us His plans. As we grow deeper in a relationship with God and better understand His character, we will better understand His desires and purposes as well. Once we know His will about any given issue or situation, then we can ask in confidence and faith. When we do this, we know that He hears us and that His purposes for us will be accomplished (1 John 3:22).
