KINGDOM OF GOD … POWER / 1 CORINTHIANS 4:20

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 4:20

For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.

KINGDOM OF GOD … POWER / 1 CORINTHIANS 4:20

The “kingdom of God” reveals itself in power, which means that members of God’s kingdom must have more than talk and a good message; they must demonstrate a living witness of the power of the Spirit as well (1 Corinthians 2:4; Acts 1:8). In the New Testament, this power was strong and seen by the people enough to convince them of their sin, their accountability to God and their need to get right with Him (John 16:8). The openness allowed people to receive God’s forgiveness and to enter a personal relationship with God through faith in Christ (1 Corinthians 4:15; Acts 26:16-18). The power of God’s kingdom is also evident through the working of miracles (1 Corinthians 2:4) and the ability to do what is right by God’s standard (Romans 14:17).

APOSTLES … CONDEMNED / 1 CORINTHIANS 4:9-13

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 4:9-13

APOSTLES … CONDEMNED / 1 CORINTHIANS 4:9-13

Now Paul describes some of the difficulties endured by the apostles – those personally commissioned by Christ to deliver His original message and lead the effort of establishing His church. The verb “put on display” gives a picture of the gladiator contests in the arena (or perhaps a victory procession of a Roman general parading his prisoners through the city). It suggests that God has appointed the apostles to a life of adversity, inconvenience and suffering to be seen by the world, by angels and by the church.

  1. Paul’s circumstances even at that time (as he wrote from Ephesus) involved such things as lack of food, drink and proper clothing. He has been despised, mistreated and has no home. He has worked hard night and day; and yet, he is cursed, persecuted, slandered and considered the “scum of the earth, the refuse [trash] of the world” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9; 6:4-5, 8-10; 11:23-29; 12:10).
  2. Although suffering was in one sense a special condition of Paul’s ministry as an apostle (Acts 9:16), it is also the common experience of all true believers who are loyal to Christ and are opposed to sin, Satan, evil and injustice. Their difficulties are a means of sharing and identifying with Christ’s suffering (Romans 8:17; Philippians 1:29; 3:10; 1 Thessalonians 3:3).

HAVE ALL YOU WANT … HAVE BECOME RICH / 1 CORINTHIANS 4:8

Some in the church at Corinth took pride in their personal wisdom, superior knowledge and spiritual gifts. They felt that they had all they needed from God and were above Paul’s authority and instruction. Paul uses sarcasm when he points out their spiritual pride and immaturity. He then goes on to show them how those who truly identify with Jesus will often follow a path of life in which suffering and hardship come before honor and glory (Romans 8:17).

WHY DO YOU BOAST / 1 CORINTHINANS 4:7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 4:7

For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?

WHY DO YOU BOAST / 1 CORINTHINANS 4:7

Pride is one of the root causes of divisions among people in churches. To remain humble, Christians must realize that their natural abilities and spiritual gifts are from God and should never lead to feeling superior or worthy of being recognized more than others. All that we have and all that we can become are made possible by God and those He uses to invest in our lives along the way. So, there is no place for pride – only gratefulness to God and others.

Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.

EXPOSE THE MOTIVES OF MEN’S HEARTS / 1 CORINTHIANS 4:5

God eventually will bring to light the secret acts of all individuals, exposing their true thoughts and motives – good as well as bed (Matthew 6:3-4; Matthew 6:6; 1 Timothy 5:24-25). That is to say, the inner lives of everyone will be revealed exactly as they were; nothing will remain hidden (Mark 4:22; Luke 12:2-3; Romans 2:16).

CONSCIENCE IS CLEAR … DOES NOT MAKE ME INNOCENT / 1 CORINTHIANS 4:4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 4:4

For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord.

CONSCIENCE IS CLEAR … DOES NOT MAKE ME INNOCENT / 1 CORINTHIANS 4:4

The word “conscience” literally means “with knowledge.” The conscience is an inner, God-given awareness that confirms to our mind and personality the rightness or wrongness of our actions. While we must always strive to keep a clean and clear conscience in relation to Do (1 Corinthians 10:27; 2 Corinthians 1:12; 1 Timothy 1:5,19; 3:9; Hebrews 9:14; 1 Peter 3:16; 1 Peter 3:21; Acts 24:16), we must also realize that the conscience is not the final authority. In Paul’s case, he was truly innocent of any wrong motivation toward the Corinthian church; yet he still recognized that his final considerations were only human and his own conscience could be mistaken. We also must realize that just because we feel confident about our actions or motivations, we should never be so puffed up with pride that we assume we are always correct in our personal views and actions. That is because if we are not careful, humble and submitted to the standard of God’s Word, our consciences can become insensitive or corrupted (1 Timothy 4:2; Titus 1:15-16). If that happens, we may not even be aware of our sin and misguided perceptions.

GOD WILL DESTROY HIM / 1 CORINTHIANS 3:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 3:17

If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

GOD WILL DESTROY HIM / 1 CORINTHIANS 3:17

Here Paul presents one of the strongest warnings in the New Testament to anyone responsible for building or developing Christ’s church. The passage is especially relevant for those in teaching and leadership positions. If anyone defiles or corrupts God’s temple (a local congregation or a group of congregations), God Himself will punish that individual with terrible ruin and eternal death. Negligent servants corrupt and destroy Christ’s church by:

  1. Engaging in immoral behaviors and lifestyles (1 Corinthians 5:1).
  2. Promoting lies, deceptions and selfish ambition (1 Corinthians 3:3; Acts 5:1-11).
  3. Promoting false teaching, rejecting God’s original revelation and disregarding the truth of His Word (1 Timothy 4:1; Jude 1:4).
  4. Tolerating sin and worldliness among those who claim to follow Christ (1 Corinthians 5:1-2, 5-7; Revelation 3:17-18).
  5. Attempting to build a church by worldly wisdom, human standards or messages that are not the true “gospel” (1 Corinthians 1:18-2:5; Philippians 1:15-16).

YOU YOURSELVES ARE GOD’S TEMPLE / 1 CORINTHIANS 3:16

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 3:16

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

YOU YOURSELVES ARE GOD’S TEMPLE / 1 CORINTHIANS 3:16

The emphasis here is on the entire church congregation, or local community of Christians. The Bible also refers to individual Christians (their bodies) as temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19); but here the reference is to the entire church body as the dwelling place of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:9; 2 Corinthians 6:16; Ephesians 2:21). As God’s temple in the middle of a corrupt society, God’s people in Corinth were not to participate in the evil and ungodly practices so often embraced in that society. They were to reject all forms of ungodly and immoral belief and behaviors. God’s temple must be holy (1 Corinthians 3:17) – morally pure, spiritually whole, separated from evil and dedicated completely to God – because God is holy (1 Peter 1:14-16).

HE WILL SUFFER LOSS – BUT ONLY AS ONE ESCAPING THROUGH THE FLAMES / 1 CORINTHIANS 3:15

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 3:15

If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

HE WILL SUFFER LOSS – BUT ONLY AS ONE ESCAPING THROUGH THE FLAMES / 1 CORINTHIANS 3:15

HE WILL SUFFER LOSS

All of God’s people must be faithful and careful in their efforts to serve Christ and fulfill His purposes for their lives (1 Corinthians 3:10). This is especially so when handling God’s Word. That is because one day the quality of each person’s service will be put to the test, and their “work will be shown for what it is” (1 Corinthians 3:13). The Bible assures us that all who have accepted God’s forgiveness and have a personal relationship with Christ are free from God’s condemning judgment (eternal punishment and separation from God, John 5:24; Romans 8:1; Hebrews 10:14-17). However, there is still a future judgment for God’s people (1 John 4:17) based on the degree of their faithfulness to God and the opportunities given to them during their life on earth (1 Corinthians 3:10; 4:2-5; 2 Corinthians 5:10). In that judgment, there is the possibility that a believer, although spiritually saved, may experience great loss (Greek zemioo, meaning “to suffer loss or damage”).

The careless Christian is in danger of experiencing loss or damage through:

  1. A feeling of shame at Christ’s coming (2 Timothy 2:15; 1 John 2:28).
  2. Loss of his or her life’s work for God (1 Corinthians 3:12-15).
  3. Loss of glory and honor from God (Romans 2:7).
  4. Loss of opportunity for service and authority in heaven (Matthew 25:14-30).
  5. A low position in heaven (Matthew 5:19; Matthew 19:30).
  6. Loss of rewards (1 Corinthians 3:14-15).
  7. Repayment for the wrong done to others (Colossians 3:24-25). These passages should impress on us the need for complete dedication and self-sacrificing service to our Lord. (Romans 12:1-2; Philippians 2:12; Philippians 4:3).

BUT ONLY AS ONE ESCAPING THROUGH THE FLAMES

“Escaping through the flames” is probably an expression meaning “by a narrow escape” or “barely saved.” God will evaluate for each person the quality of his or her life, service, influence, teaching and work for His kingdom (1 Corinthians 3:13) – especially of each minister. If a person’s work is judged as lacking or unworthy, he or she will lose some degree of reward, yet will still be saved and enter heaven. Notice that this passage does not teach a doctrine of purgatory (the belief that there is a place where souls remain until amends have been made for their sins and they can enter heaven). Paul is speaking of a judgment of works rather than the cleansing of a person from sins that would lead him or her to eternal punishment and separation from God.

ONE PURPOSE / 1 CORINTHIANS 3:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 3:8

The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor.

ONE PURPOSE / 1 CORINTHIANS 3:8

Each of God’s people fills a different role that is equally valid and significant in His overall purpose. One Christian may be the first to deliver God’s message to a certain individual. Another believer may come along later and encourage that person by words or example to further consider God’s truth, or perhaps to grow in a relationship with Christ. In some cases, Christians may pray for years for family members who do not know Christ, then another believer has the privilege of praying with that person to receive Christ. But all of these efforts are aimed at the same purpose, and it is God who finally brings people into a relationship with Himself and develops them into what He wants them to be (1 Corinthians 3:7). For this reason, all who serve Christ must take comfort in the fact that whether they see the effects of their service for Christ immediately or not, they are expected simply to be faithful to the tasks and opportunities God has given them (1 Corinthians 4:2; Matthew 25:21, 23). They are not responsible for causing the spiritual results in people’s lives. At the same time, those who serve Christ must never become puffed up with pride over the results or success of their ministry – all of it is a credit to God alone. In this word picture, God’s people are pictured as His farm and His building (1 Corinthians 3:9) where Paul, Apollos and all other servants of God work together for Him.
