(KJV) Genesis 25:31

And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.

BIRTHRIGHT / GENESIS 25:31

The birthright (the firstborn son’s inheritance) consisted of:

  1. Spiritual leadership and becoming the head of the family.
  2. A double portion of the inheritance (Deuteronomy 21:17).
  3. The claim to the covenant blessing that God had promised to Abraham. The fact that Esau sold his birthright shows how little he valued God’s blessings and covenant promises. He foolishly chose to trade future, long-term benefits for present, momentary pleasures. He was more concerned about the physical than the spiritual. That is what it means when it says he “despised his birthright” (Genesis 25:34; Hebrews 12:16). Jacob, on the other hand, wanted the spiritual blessings that were part of God’s covenant – his “life agreement.” Because of this, Israel’s twelve tribes came through Jacob’s family.
