We have had our share of up and downs but I'm forever grateful that he is the man God blessed me with. I am happy to report we have been married for 25 years. I love this space on the internet. I create blog posts about faith, my Christian Walk, and our life on the farm. I have learned from the Word of the Lord. I hope this space will give you encouragement and inspiration in your walk with God. I speak on topics that make some breathe a sigh of relief and make others get pretty uncomfortable. I believe that there is power in transparency and that as children of God, we shouldn't hold anything back. Yes, even those raw and messy parts of our Life's Journey. Over the last several years, I have wrestled with my purpose, struggled with various sins, survived some severe injuries, and was diagnosed with severe illnesses that have stopped me in my tracks. Although these dark times have been tough, my walk with God and family has proven to be so fulfilling and sweet, regardless of any earthly circumstance. Christ is enough! And I want you to see that He is enough for you too. The Lord has put it on my heart to share His Word with you. I'm truly honored to meet you and hope you'll introduce yourself to me as well.

When the “antichrists” left the church congregations because they really had nothing in common with true believers (1 John 1:3), they certainly were not in a saving relationship with Christ. This allows for two possibilities:

  1. They were never true followers of Christ to begin with.
  2. They had once been in a saving relationship with Christ but later had abandoned their faith in Him.

THE LAST HOUR … MANY ANTICHRISTS / 1 JOHN 2:18

Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

THE LAST HOUR … MANY ANTICHRISTS / 1 JOHN 2:18

Like other New Testament writers, John viewed the whole period beginning with Christ’s first coming (by birth) as the last days, or “last hour.” It was a reality that gave a sense of urgency and expectancy in relation to Christ’s return (Matthew 25:1-13). Even in John’s time, Christians were aware that a great enemy of God and His people – an antichrist or false Christ – will come before the last days are completed. This person will rise to world power and lead a great rebellion against Christ and the New Testament faith (Revelation 13:1; Revelation 13:8; Revelation 13:18; Revelation 19:20; Revelation 20:10). Yet John says that before this, there will be “many antichrists” (“against Christ”), some of whom had already infiltrated the church and promoted false teachings about Christ. These deceivers claim to be believers, yet they love the world and its sinful pleasures. They twist the message of Christ by denying that He came in human form (1 John 4:2; 2 John 1:2, 7) or that He was truly the Christ (the promised Savior from God, 1 John 2:22). The “antichrists” John refers to in this letter are probably early Gnostics (1 John 1:1).

See John 13:34-35 true love always acts in a God-honoring and selfless way (1 Corinthians 10:31). It puts the best interests of others ahead of personal freedoms and does not do anything that may cause another person to compromise his or her conscience or “to make him stumble” spiritually (Romans 14:20; 1 Corinthians 10:32; 1 Corinthians 9:19).

OLD COMMAND … NEW COMMAND / 1 JOHN 2:7-8

The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. 8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

OLD COMMAND … NEW COMMAND / 1 JOHN 2:7-8

God’s command to love others was not new (Leviticus 19:18; Matthew 22:39-40), yet it took on a whole new perspective through Christ’s perfect example and His sacrificial death for us on the cross. Christ’s followers are now to follow that example in showing selfless love for one another.

DOES NOT DO WHAT HE COMMANDS / 1 JOHN 2:4

 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

DOES NOT DO WHAT HE COMMANDS / 1 JOHN 2:4

John was contending against those who were abusing the foundational teaching of God’s grace (His unearned, undeserved favor and love) as it relates to spiritual salvation. They claimed that since salvation came by God’s grace and not our efforts (which is true; Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5) that Christians were in no way obligated to any fixed set of rules, including the commands of God’s moral law (which is not true; (Romans 2:13; 3:31; 8:4). John opposed these antinomian (against the law) teachers, who taught that abandoning a sinful life and following the moral principles of God’s law was a choice that believers could make for themselves. 

  1. These misguided individuals believed that it did not matter what they did, particularly with their physical bodies, as long as they had the right spiritual knowledge. 
  2. They claimed that people could “know” God and be in a saving relationship with Him and at the same time ignore God’s standards and disobey His commands (John 17:3).
  3. John states boldly that those who make such a claim are liars and do not have God’s truth in them. Attempting to be justified (made right with God) through faith in Christ without a commitment to actively follow Him is doomed to failure.

WE KNOW THAT WE HAVE COME TO KNOW HIM / 1 JOHN 2:3

And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

WE KNOW THAT WE HAVE COME TO KNOW HIM / 1 JOHN 2:3

Forty-two times throughout this letter John uses two Greek verbs usually translated “know.” One of these words is directly related to the name of the Gnostics (1 John 1:1), a group of false teachers who claimed to have special knowledge (Greek gnosis) about God and about the way to spiritual salvation. John clarifies that true knowledge of God does not come through secret wisdom revealed by these false teachers or any other person; it comes only through a personal relationship with God’s Son, Jesus Christ (1 John 1:3; 1 John 5:20).

God’s holiness (purity, perfection and separation from evil) and perfect justice required that a penalty be paid for humanity’s offenses against Him. Out of love for us (1 John 4:10; John 3:16), God Himself provided the only means of completely meeting the requirement of the penalty for sin by sending His Son, Jesus, to die in our place. As our “atoning [sin-covering, forgiveness-providing] sacrifice,” Jesus took on Himself the punishment for our sins and turned away God’s wrath (justified anger and judgment) from us. Forgiveness is now offered to everyone throughout the world, but it must be personally received by turning to Christ in true faith and repentance (turning to Christ in true faith and repentance (turning from our own God-defying way and following Christ; 1 John 4:9, 14; John 1 :29; John 3:16; John 5:24).

SO THAT YOU WILL NOT SIN / 1 JOHN 2:1

My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

SO THAT YOU WILL NOT SIN / 1 JOHN 2:1

John believed that born-again (Romans 3:3-7) Christians are still capable of some kinds of sin. However, he does not teach that the Christian must sin; instead, he challenges his readers to rely on God’s power so they can live without sin (Romans 6:15; 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10). For those who do, on occasion, give in to sin and break God’s standard, the remedy is to confess and turn completely away from that sin (1 John 1:9). Jesus’ death as “the atoning [sin-covering] sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 2:2; 1 John 1:7) and His ministry in heaven as “one who speaks to the Father in our defense” (Greek parakletos, our “advocate”) are the basis of our assurance of forgiveness and spiritual cleansing. This is true the first time we come to Christ to receive forgiveness and salvation, and it is also true on an ongoing basis as He continually serves as our advocate (one who speaks in court on behalf of a defendant). In God’s court, the defender must Himself be perfect and sinless, which means Jesus is the only one qualified to defend us. Jesus intercedes (intervenes, pleads our case) to His Father on the basis of His sacrificial death in our place and our active faith in Him (Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25; 1 John 3:15).

It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

THE YEAST / LUKE 13:21

As with the parable of the mustard seed (Luke 13:19), there are two slightly different views of this parable. 

  1. Some see it as simply referring to the powerful influence of God’s kingdom as it works in people from the inside out to affect the world. 
  2. Others consider the fact that yeast in the Old Testament normally represented the presence of evil or impurity that causes something to ferment or become corrupt (Exodus 12:19; 13:6-8; Leviticus 2:11; Leviticus 6:17; Deuteronomy 16:3-4; Amos 4:4-5). In the New Testament, yeast represents the false teaching and hypocritical lifestyles of the Pharisees, Sadducees (Luke 16:22) and Herodians (Mark 8:15). In 1 Corinthians 5:6-8 Paul considers yeast to represent “malice and wickedness,” while the absence of yeast represents “sincerity and truth” (Galatians 5:9). For these reasons, many understand this parable to teach how evil, false doctrine and spiritual impurity exist and spread throughout all areas of God’s work, deceiving many people. Both angles of interpretation express valid truths about God’s kingdom on earth. 

The opportunity for evil to spread its influence into God’s kingdom happens when: (a) human ideas take priority over the authority of Scripture (Matthew 22:23, 29); (b) worldliness and immoral behavior creep into the church (1 Corinthians 5:1-2; Revelation 2-3); (c)people seek position or power within the church because they are concerned more about their own ambition than about God’s honor (Matthew 23); (d) false teachers are given a position of influence (Matthew 24:11; Matthew 24:24) and gain control through their false teaching (Galatians 1:9); (e) people who claim to be Christians appear righteous, but are not really following Christ (Matthew 23; Jude 1:12-19). In the end times, before Christ returns, these evil influences will work their way into much of God’s work in Christian churches, denominations, colleges and seminaries until the true New Testament message of Christ and Biblical standards of right and wrong are diluted and corrupted on a massive scale (Luke 18:8; Matthew 24:10-12; Galatians 1:9; 2 Thessalonians 2:3; 1 Timothy 4:1; Revelation 2-3).

Every Christian must be careful that the yeast of evil does not permeate his or her own life. The secret of victory is keeping our eyes focused faithfully on Jesus (Titus 2:13; Hebrews 12:2, 15), rejecting the temptations and evil influences of the world (James 1:27; 1 John 2:15-17), studying and applying God’s Word (John 15:7; James 1:21), looking forward to Christ’s return (Luke 12:35-40), continually listening to the inner voice of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:12-14; Galatians 5:16-18), being willing to suffer (1 Peter 4:1-2), fighting against evil (1 Corinthians 10:6; 1 Thessalonians 5:15; 1 Peter 3:11), defending the message of Christ (Philippians 1:17) and putting on the full spiritual armor of God (Ephesians 6:11-18).

It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.

MUSTARD SEED / LUKE 13:19

The parables of the mustard seed and the yeast go together, but there is debate as to their exact meaning. Many interpreters see them as speaking mainly of the growth and influence of God’s kingdom. Others accept this interpretation to a degree but also view certain elements of the stories a s describing how evil eventually tries to work its way into God’s visible kingdom (the church, the community of Jesus’ true followers) on earth. The parable of the mustard seed illustrates the small beginning of God’s kingdom and its development through the ages. Though its start was so small and so simple – Jesus and a small group of committed disciples (John 20:22; Acts 2:4) – the visible kingdom did spread through the ages. But its great size and influence also attract “the birds of the air,” which are really evil imposters who take away the seed of truth (as in Matthew 13:4, 19). In Revelation 18:2, Babylon the Great (representing the backslidden, unfaithful and rebellious church) becomes a home for demons and “a haunt for every unclean and detestable bird” (Revelation 2 – 3 for Christ’s description of how spiritual decay had permeated the majority of the seven churches; Revelation 18:4).
