I'm Margaret (AKA "Margarita"). I am a Christian, wife, mother of three, and grandmother (AKA "Mimi") of three. My husband Stace and I met many, many years ago. We have had our share of up and downs but I'm forever grateful that he is the man God blessed me with. I am happy to report we have been married for 25 years. I love this space on the internet. I create blog posts about faith, my Christian Walk, and our life on the farm. I have learned from the Word of the Lord. I hope this space will give you encouragement and inspiration in your walk with God. I speak on topics that make some breathe a sigh of relief and make others get pretty uncomfortable. I believe that there is power in transparency and that as children of God, we shouldn't hold anything back. Yes, even those raw and messy parts of our Life's Journey. Over the last several years, I have wrestled with my purpose, struggled with various sins, survived some severe injuries, and was diagnosed with severe illnesses that have stopped me in my tracks. Although these dark times have been tough, my walk with God and family has proven to be so fulfilling and sweet, regardless of any earthly circumstance. Christ is enough! And I want you to see that He is enough for you too. The Lord has put it on my heart to share His Word with you. I'm truly honored to meet you and hope you'll introduce yourself to me as well.

No one can become acquainted with Jesus, accept His offer of salvation and at the same time remain defiant, dishonest and uncharitable toward others.

SPIRITUAL CONVERSION OF ZACHAEUS / LUKE 19:1-10

SPIRITUAL CONVERSION OF ZACHAEUS / LUKE 19:1-10

Jesus was actively fulfilling the purpose of His coming – “to seek and to save what was lost” (Luke 19:10) – all the way into the last days before His death on the cross (Luke 15:3-7; Ezekiel 34:16). Zacchaeus, a tax collector with authority from the Roman government, earned his living by collecting from the people more that he should have. (The fact that he was a chief collector probably meant that he was in charge of the district or region, which at that time was quite prosperous.) Because of the greed and position of tax collector, the people would have despised them, but Jesus reached out to this man who was considered undesirable by society. Jesus’ concern for Zacchaeus is a challenge to us to take Christ’ message to those whom many people might consider to be the “undesirables” of our society. Zacchaeus actually serves as a good example of how we all should respond when Jesus comes our way. Zacchaeus had a strong desire to encounter Jesus, he was quick to respond to Jesus’ call, and he proved his change of heart with actions (Matthew 3:8).

NOT TO DRINK WINE / LEVITICUS 10:9

 Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations:

NOT TO DRINK WINE / LEVITICUS 10:9

All priests were to abstain from, or avoid, intoxicating drinks of any kind when performing their religious duties. 

  1. They were expected to demonstrate holiness (moral and spiritual purity, wholeness, separation from evil and dedication to what God says is right) as they served and taught God’s ways (Leviticus 10:10-11; Ephesians 5:18).
  2. Disobeying God’s instructions relating to this matter was serious enough to bring the penalty of death. God considered any amount of intoxicating drink an unworthy companion for anyone who served under His highest ministry standards. Its damaging effect on wise judgment and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s direction excluded it from the lives of God’s priests (Proverbs 23:29-35; 1 Timothy 3:3; Titus 2:2).

FIRE … CONSUMED THEM / LEVITICUS 10:2

And there went out fire from the Lord, and devoured them, and they died before the Lord.

FIRE … CONSUMED THEM / LEVITICUS 10:2

Nadab and Abihu were killed because, as priests, they defied God and His law and showed complete disrespect for the holy place (Leviticus 10:3).

  1. By using fire from a clearly forbidden source (Leviticus 10:1; Exodus 30:9-10), these disobedient priests refused to take God’s commandments seriously. Instead of teaching God’s Law as His holy ministers, they served their own desires and proved that they had no fear of or reverence for God.
  2. These two men were to be spiritual leaders. However, sin that is done intentionally and openly by God’s ministers does a lot of damage to God’s purposes on earth. Their examples dishonor the church, while misleading it people; but most importantly, they dishonor God. This is why the Bible teaches that only those who have lived out a steadfast and consistent faithfulness and loyalty to God and His Word are qualified to lead God’s people (1 Timothy 3:1-7).

UNAUTHORIZED FIRE / LEVITICUS 10:1

And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the Lord, which he commanded them not.

UNAUTHORIZED FIRE / LEVITICUS 10:1

Nadab and Abihu put into their censers (fire pans) burning coals from a source that was not permitted by God (Exodus 30:7-9). In addition, only the high priest was supposed to offer incense on the altar (Exodus 30:7-9). Some interpreters believe that Nadab and Abihu might have been under the influence of alcohol (Leviticus 10:9-10).

Aaron therefore went unto the altar, and slew the calf of the sin offering, which was for himself.

SLAUGHTERED THE CALF / LEVITICUS 9:8

God established a system of animal sacrifices as a method by which sinful people could come to Him in repentance (admitting and turning from their sin). They could come to receive His forgiveness and renew their relationship with Him. 

  1. The animal sacrifice was an object lesson, which showed the principle of vicarious sacrifice. This was a sacrifice performed by one person on behalf of another, or one life given in place of another. It also showed a substitutionary atonement. This was an innocent sacrifice providing “covering” and forgiveness for a guilty individual’s sins. In this latter case, the life of the innocent animal was offered in the place of the sinful and guilty worshiper (Leviticus 1:4).
  2. The sacrifice expressed a person’s repentance (genuine remorse and determination to give up – or turn from – the wrong attitudes or behaviors and to turn toward God). By offering the sacrifice, a person was admitting guilt and recognizing the need to be cleansed and restored to a right relationship with God (Leviticus 16:30-34; Leviticus 1:2). 
  3. When a sacrifice was made in faith, obedience and humility, God was pleased and extended to the worshiper the grace (undeserved favor) and forgiveness desired (Leviticus 4:3; Leviticus 4:20; Leviticus 5:15-16).
  4. The sacrifice provided atonement (“covering over”) – or forgiveness – for sin. 
  5. From the New Testament perspective, animal sacrifices were imperfect because they could not actually remove sin or change a person’s life. Under the new covenant, Jesus’ sacrifice alone can remove sin and change a person’s heart (Hebrews 10:1-4). This Old Testament ritual was simply a prophetic picture of how Jesus would offer “for all time one sacrifice for sins” (Hebrews 10:12).

Up to this time, Jesus’ disciples likely held the same view as most Jews of that time – that riches were usually a sign of God’s favor and approval. As a result, they were amazed by Jesus’ words about the rich (Luke 18:24-26).

THE PHARISEE AND THE TAX COLLECTOR / LUKE 18:9-14

See Matthew 3:7, for a brief background on the Pharisees.

  1. The Pharisee was puffed up with pride and self-righteousness. Such people think they are righteous (good and right with God) because of their own efforts. They ignore their sinful nature (their condition of opposition to and separation from God), their own unworthiness and their constant need for God’ s help and mercy. Because of their exceptional commitment and works that seem to be good, they do not think they need to repent and ask for God’s forgiveness. 
  2. The tax collector was a different type of man and possessed a different type of heart than the Pharisee. He had likely cheated many people, was deeply conscious of his sin and guilt and was willing to truly repent (humble himself, admit his sin, turn from his own way, surrender to God and follow God’s purposes). This man came humbly before God in repentance, and as a result, he was forgiven and made right with God. Such humility must characterize all true children of God.

HE WILL SEE THAT THEY GET JUSTICE

God is not unwilling to answer our prayers, but He does want us to learn to depend on Him more and to take an active role in His plans. As we spend time with Him in prayer, we get to know Him better and we begin to line up our lives and desires with His purposes. That will be most important in the difficult days ahead; but when Jesus returns for those “who cry out to Him day and night” (Luke 18:7), He will put an end to the distress and suffering they witnessed and endured in a wicked and hostile world. At that time, He will take them to be with Him (John 14:2-3). When Christ comes, His faithful followers will be “caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air” (1 Thessalonians 4:17). Then God will administer His justice and judgment on the wicked (1 Thessalonians 5:2; 1 Thessalonians 5:3; 1 Thessalonians 5:9). Ultimately, Christ will return to earth with His followers and reign with perfect justice (Revelation 19-20). Christ coming is the only real hope for His people and for this world (John 14:2; 1 Thessalonians 5:2-3; 2 Thessalonians 2:8; Revelation 19:11-21).

WILL HE FIND FAITH ON THE EARTH?

As Jesus ends this illustration (word picture), He links faith directly with continued, pursuing prayer. Continuing to bring a need to God does not show a lack of faith, but just the opposite. It shows that the issue has been released to God. It shows we recognize that our concerns belong to God. It removes the feeling of being anxious or worried because we can depend on Christ. This will be as important as ever in the days ahead. Jesus’ question suggests that as the time for His return draws nearer, evil will be so increased that many in the church will stop depending on Christ and forsake their faith in Him (Matthew 24:11-13, 24; 1 Timothy 4:1). As Christ’s return draws nearer, every Christion should continue to ask: Am I showing my faith through continued prayer about everything? Am I praying that God’s justice will prevail and that His purposes will be accomplished completely – now and forever? If the answer is no, then as believers we need to ask ourselves if we are really living for and looking for His return (Revelation 19-22).
